Apple Seeds iPhone OS 3.1

Apple has seeded iPhone OS 3.1 to developers along with a new version of the iPhone SDK.

Few details have been provided; however, its likely that Apple has closed the exploit used by ultrasn0w to unlock the iPhone.

Remember not to update when the new firmware goes public.

Update:
Word from the Dev Team on iPhone OS 3.1:

You’ve seen us give this warning before, and there are only so many ways to say it or come up with a clever title Smile But here it is: ultrasn0w users must stay away from any firmware updates past 3.0 (including today’s 3.1 beta) until we release the tools that let you update the firmware without updating the baseband. For most phones out there, baseband updates are irreversible and you’ll lose ultrasn0w.

The 3.0 jailbreak was one of those (rare) times where both the jailbreak and the unlock coincided (the only other time was 2.2). It’s important that people realize that *most* firmware releases aren’t like that, and you need to take steps (via the tools) to separate the firmware update from its included baseband update.

This warning does not apply to the iPhone 2G, which uses BootNeuter for the unlock, not ultrasn0w.

iPhone SDK confirms a new model iPhone - but few apparent cosmetic changes

This image was discovered by a member of the MacTalk forums, the icon set buried well within the device framework for iPhone SDK beta 5 and shows an images for iPhone 2,1 — the internal working codename for the next version of Apple’s iPhone. iPhone firmware Beta 5 doesn’t make any references to iPod 2,2, the expected minor refresh to the iPod touch.

iPhone 3.0 BETA 3 Released

Apple on Tuesday evening made available to iPhone developers a third beta of iPhone Software 3.0 showing some early signs of optimizations and carrying with it an updated version of the iPhone SDK 3.0.

Available in four distinct distributions — iPhone, iPhone 3G, first-gen iPod touch, and second-gen iPod touch — the third beta of iPhone OS 3.0 carries build number 7A280f and arrives exactly two weeks after the second beta.

People familiar with the software in the brief time that its been available have been reporting speed optimizations during keyboard input and use of the included App Store application.

Spotlight also reportedly saves its last search results and offers options for excluding applications from searches, though it’s unclear if these two findings are new to beta 3.

Arriving in tandem with iPhone Software 3.0 beta 3 was a similarly labeled beta of iPhone SDK 3.0 carrying build number 9M2728. Among the changes included with the new build is an updated beta of the Xcode IDE that showcases a new Overview toolbar and a “completely revamped” assistant interface for creating new projects, targets and files.

Meanwhile, updates to Interface Builder introduce new drag-and-drop capabilities for repairing objects and reordering files in document outline view, as well as a new string table interface that simplifies the process of making textual changes across multiple documents.

Apple did warn developers that an issue with beta 3 of iPhone Software 3.0 will prevent them from running iPhone apps that have been compiled for earlier version of the iPhone software, but said it hopes to resolve the issue with the release of the next beta.

Those are only a few of the new features of the iPhone firmware 3.0 that will be available to everyone this summer. For developers they can download the new SDK and beta 3.0 firmware now. For iPhone owners it will be Free and $9.99 for ipod Touch owners, but there is another catch, MMS and A2DP Stereo Bluetooth will not work on the 1st gen iPhones, booo.

Apple Launches iPhone Developer Forums - No More NDA

Image representing iPhone as depicted in Crunc...

Image via CrunchBase

A few weeks ago, Apple announced that it was dropping the non-disclosure agreement (NDA) for all released versions of Apple’s iPhone Software. Well, Apple has now officially released the new agreement, which removes the confidentiality clause and makes several other changes. Theoretically, this means that developers can now truly feel free to discuss the iPhone APIs, applications can be open-sourced, and more.

As previously reported, users had already started distributing free iPhone SDK App source code. The company has also announced an iPhone developer-to-developer forum, which includes its own set of agreements.

iPhone Development Tutorials with Apps Amuck

AppsAmuck.com has been created by iPocketApps as a website dedicated to creating tutorials for developing iPhone Apps. The key here is simple: “Taking baby steps is better than taking no steps at all!”. AppsAmuck plans on writing 31 iPhone applications in the next 31 days. AppsAmuck will publish both the executable and the source code for each application. Their goal is for each of these applications to be useful, interesting, and straight-forward. Someone considering writing their first iPhone application should be able to look at these applications and “get it”.

iPhone Firmware 2.2 Beta 1 availabe for Developers

Apple notified some iPhone developers that a new beta iPhone firmware 2.2 is available for testing. The new version is labeled iPhone OS 2.2 beta 1 and is accompanied by a new beta of the iPhone SDK (build 9M2611). The only differences noted by Apple are “compatibility testing”. There is no word yet of the new background push notification service that has been promised by Apple. The latest email from Steve Jobs claimed that this feature is “running a bit late”

Update: Here we see some small changes to Safari, moving the Google search bar to the top next to the address bar, making a quick search easier.
