Snow Leopard & Jailbreaking & Facebook 3.0 Released

Yesterday, the Dev-Team tweeted about their concern with the release of Snow Leopard and jailbreaking. They said,

“If you get both Snow Leopard & iPhone on Fri, easiest to jailbreak 1st, update to Snow 2nd ) Til any kinks are worked out.”

However, a little later they tweeted,

“Lots of tweets that redsn0w and PwnageTool work great on Snow Leopard, so *should* be kink-free Friday! Thanks twitterers!”

So, if you are getting (or got) Snow Leopard today, you should be good to go.

A new version of Facebook for iPhone OS 3.0 is available now with many new features and improvements.

The App Store description still contains information for version 2.5; however, the actual download is now version 3.0. I simply deleted my previous Facebook app from Applications then redownloaded it to update to the new version.

So Whats New in This Update?
1. The “new” News Feed
2. Like
3. Events (including the ability to RSVP)
4. Notes
5. Pages
6. Create new photo albums
7. Upload photos to any album
8. Zoom into photos
9. Easier photo tagging
10. Profile Pictures albums
11. A new home screen for easy access to all your stuff, search, and notifications
12. Add your favorite profiles and pages to the home screen
13. Better Notifications (they link to the comments so you can reply)
14. Quickly call or text people right from the Friends page
15. Messages you are typing will be restored if you quit or are interrupted by a phone call
16. Video uploads for the 3GS

one feature they don’t seem to mention is the mini-browser (like IM+) where you click links & it now loads in the Facebook app vs closing it & launching Safari in the previous version

Google Latitude On iPhone

Google today demonstrated its Latitude location-based service running on the iPhone, according to a report by TechCrunch.

Google Latitude is a service which allows you to see where your friends are and what they are up to then quickly contact them with SMS, IM, or a phone call. The service is already available for Android phones; however, Google is waiting for the iPhone 3.0 OS before launching on the iPhone.

Google has been waiting for the 3.0 software is because it’s not actually creating a native iPhone app for Latitude — as all other location-based services on the iPhone are — instead it’s using the Safari web browser to run Latitude. Thanks to HTML 5, Safari will be able to access a user’s location information and Latitude will be able to access that as well (provided the user gives permission). This will put it on par with what Google is doing in its browser for Android.

A web app doesn’t seem like the best solution for Google Latitude on the iPhone but we will have to wait and see what happens.

Some iPhone OS 3.0 BETA 3 Discoveries

Developer sources familiarizing themselves with betas of Apple’s iPhone 3.0 software have uncovered a handful of additional tweaks and improvements to the system in recent weeks, including changes to Safari’s window handling, new battery status indicators and notification preferences, as well as the advent of data detectors in certain apps.

Safari

With the release of iPhone 3.0, Safari will let you close out and clear all your open browser windows without having to first create a new blank page to get rid of the contents of the last active window.

For example, you can have eight open Safari windows in the existing version of the iPhone software, seven of which you can close rapidly by using the red “x” icons in the upper left-hand corners of the pages. However, there’s no “x” icon to close out the last page standing. Therefore, the only way to get rid of the contents on this last remaining page is to first create a “New Page,” then cycle back to the page and close it out.

With iPhone 3.0, Apple has enabled the option to close out the lone remaining page. Once the “x” icon is triggered, the page disappears and a new blank page quickly slides into view. This process is reportedly difficult to capture in a screenshot, though an example illustrating part of the process can be seen below.

Battery indicators

Meanwhile, it appears that iPhone 3.0 will also introduce an option of showing you how much battery life you have left on your iPhone or iPod touch in a numerical percentage.

Resource files contained within the new version of the device’s Springboard application include 22 new PNG files to facilitate this option. Half are numerical characters (and a “%” sign) in black typeface for representing healthy battery level percentages while the other half are in red typeface for when battery life falls bellow a certain threshold.

It appears, though it’s not confirmed, that users will have the option of selecting how their battery status indicator appears in the menubar — such as an icon-only view (per current versions of the software), an icon + numerical view, or a numerical-view only. This would be similar to fast user switching menu option for Mac OS X that lets you display the accounts by “Name,” “Short Name,” or “Icon.”

Push Notification preferences

Also visible in the latest betas of iPhone 3.0 software is a new Push Notifications preference pane that will allow you to enable or disable any of the three types of notifications that third party applications can push to your handset: Sounds, Alerts and Badges. Alternatively, notifications can be disabled as a whole. This should provide users with tighter control of their battery usage.

Data Detectors

Finally, it’s also noted that Apple is enabling Data Detectors in a variety of new applications. Data Detectors automatically detect text fragments like email addresses, phone numbers, and street addresses, so you can execute actions on those fragments via touch selections — like dialing a phone number automatically by clicking on it or adding it to your address book.

The example above shows Data Detectors in action in the new Notes application. The detectors are only visible and executable when viewing a note, not while editing one.

Early Screenshots of Google Chrome for Mac

Update to: Google Plans The Release of Chrome for the Mac

Some very early screenshots of Google Chrome for Mac have been posted to show the progress made thus far.

In his blog pinkerton writes “It’s Alive!”.
The entire team made a tremendous amount of progress getting the cross-platform model and controller classes scaffolded, topped off with a Cocoa UI (with similar strides on Linux using Gtk). We were at the point where you could create new windows and tabs (and close them too) using the shared code, which would spawn/quit associated renderer processes. It was pretty exciting to watch them come and go in Activity Monitor, knowing how close we were to getting bits on the screen.

This week, everything came together and we can now load web pages in the renderer processes and display them in tabs. Here’s a screenshot of the very first time I ran Mac Chromium and loaded a webpage:

Copy and Pastebud in Safari, Find in Page, Open in New Tab and more Bookmarlets available via Cydia

A safari addon plugin was posted on Cydia today and it includes the new Pastebud which enables copy and paste on your iPhone or iPod Touch, between Mail and Safari through a clever combination of web services and bookmarklets. It does it without requiring a jailbreak or App Store download. Watch the demo, or check out my screenshots below.

To use is easy, once installed simply navigate to the page you want to copy content from, go to your bookmarks and select copy, the page will be converted on pastebuds servers to a simple format that makes copying easier. Then simply tap and drag to select the text you wish to copy. Once highlighted, tap copy on the green pastebud bar, then you can either navigate to a new web page and select paste from your bookmarks which will give you paste prompts on the fields on that page that you can input/paste text into. OR - you can tap the small New Mail icon on the left and this will open a new email with the copied text pasted in there. In both cases all links will be retained.

You also have the option of upgrading your clipboard for $5, to hide the footer that pastebud appends to the end of each paste.

Google introduces Mobile Ads for iPhone and Android

Google is now formatting AdWords text and image ads for the iPhone Safari and Android Mobile Browser. The ads can include mobile-only calls to action, and can be created from standard Google ads manager. The ads will also work on other phones with full HTML browsers in the future as they become available. (Both the iPhone and the Android G1 have full browsers based on Webkit).
