iPhone 3G S Rumor Roundup: What Didn’t Make The List

We had heard several rumors and speculations surrounding iPhone 3G S prior to Apple’s WWDC 2009 Keynote address, just like we normally do when Apple has a special event.

We all know the new features in iPhone 3G S so in this article, I’m trying to look back on the (rumored) features or changes that didn’t make it to iPhone 3GS’s official feature list.

Here is the list of features or changes that we didn’t make it to the new iPhone 3G S.

No Front Facing Camera:

There were a lot of speculations that Apple will bring a front facing camera. There was also a rumor that Apple might release a 4GB iPhone mode with video calling feature for $99.

Limited Apps running in the Background:

It was rumored that Apple was seriously evaluating the option of allowing limited third party iPhone apps to run in the background in the new iPhone with it’s improved hardware, a feature that the iPhone lacks but one that is already available in some smart phones such as T-Mobile G1, and the recently launched Palm Pre.

For now, Apple will only give us Push Notification, which is their solution to allow third party iPhone Apps such as IM, Skype etc to run at the background.

Faster Internet Connectivity:

The wireless radio component specification distributed with iPhone OS 3.0 beta had revealed support for a new chip which could have brought support for 802.11n Wi-Fi in Apple’s next generation iPhone. However, 802.11n is not part of iPhone 3G S’s official feature list.

(As you might know, 802.11n is the latest in wireless technology that is capable of giving approximately five times the performance and up to twice the range in comparison to the earlier 802.11g standard).

OLED Screen:

It was speculated that Apple might include OLED display in the new iPhone. I was quite keen on this one as an OLED display draws far less power and could operate longer on the same charge. Although, iPhone 3G S has improved battery life, it still does not have any OLED display.

Glowing Apple Logo:

We had also heard that the Apple logo at the back of the new iPhone will glow.  It would have been a nice and easy way of differentiating between the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S.

FM Radio:

iPhone OS 3.0 beta had revealed support for a new Broadcom chip BCM4329. Folks who had done some digging through the specs of the new Broadcom chip had discovered that it also supports reception and transmission of FM radio signals.

Matte Finish Back Cover:

It was strongly speculated that the back cover of the new iPhone would have a matte finish. However, Apple has kept the new iPhone 3G S has kept it unchanged and has the iPhone 3G’s shiny black finish.

Metal Rim remains Intact:

The so called leaked photos of iPhone’s bezel had indicated that the metal rim (that surrounds the edge of the device) could get replaced by a black metal or plastic case.

Rumor - More leaked Next Gen iPhone images

These images come from Italian iPhone blogger iSpazio, who posted an image yesterday and a more convincing set today. There appears to be an extra button on the lower-side of the case (camera shutter?) and the headphone jack for the iPhone appears to have moved down to the bottom of the unit. What are your thoughts?

Three new iPhones Models coming Soon and a iPod Nano with Camera

It is now rumored that Apple will introduce a third-generation iPhones in six configurations: two capacities each for three different models that will sport wireless hardware to match the speeds of wireless networks across the world.

The rumor suggest that countries with 3G speeds capable of 7.2Mbps downloads will get the high end model and other countries will receive a version similar to the current iPhone 3G capable of 3.6Mbps 3G downloads.

China for example could get its own version of the iPhone with limited in functionality and relying on the Gov’t backed TD-SCDMA standard. All three new models will look nearly identical to the current iPhone but sport a “less scratchable matte plastic body” according to iLounge and AppleInsider.

The report may offer clarity to references to two new iPhone models in betas of Apple’s iPhone Software 3.0 — iPhone 2,1 and iPhone 3,1 — as well as a third conspicuous reference to “ChinaBrick.”
Also according to the latest rumors, Apple will introduce a new version of its iPod nano with a wider screen and built-in camera later this year after first introducing three new iPhone models distinguished by their network hardware, according to a new report.

iLounge is corroborating a recent rumor that has the third-generation iPod nano gaining a point-and-shoot digital camera similar to the one found on the iPhone. Also a smaller click-wheel, making room for larger screen real estate.

Meanwhile a camera placed on the lower left-hand side of the nano’s rear will reportedly pave the way for the iPod to dual as digital camera when it’s held in landscape mode and gripped by its corners.

Next Gen iPhone Rumored to look the same as current model

With a new model iPhone rumored to be launched in the next couple months, the rumors about what the new iPhone will look like and what new features it will sport are starting to surface. This latest rumor about the new iPhone comes from a Chinese Apple forum where a user called patapon200 who describes the new iPhone as a “repeat” of the current design.

He notes that the main changes are the faster processor (improved from 400mhz to 600mhz), RAM is doubled to 256MB, there will be two storage configurations 16GB and 32GB, there is a auto focus 3.2MP camera as well as a electronic compass. All of these new features have been mentioned as rumors before.

patapon200 says that the new reference number for the next gen iPhone will be N88 and will have model number MB717LL. Neither of those model numbers have been mentioned before now used by Apple yet. He provides a screen shot of the test unit that he borrowed from an employee of Foxconn, manufacturer of the iPhone for Apple.

There is no bigger screen nor improved resolution according to ptapon200, no mention of a flash for the camera or Video recording capabilities. I guess we will all have to wait and see what the new iPhone looks like and what new features and hardware it will have. What are your thoughts?

Four Core iPhone on Apple’s Horizon

There is allot of buzz going around at CES 2009 about Imagination Technologies announcement of a new PowerVR SGX543 chip that is the firm’s first multi-core capable GPU. This new GPU, in theory, can scale to an unlimited number of cores and offer support for GPGPU acceleration. This is all especially interesting since Apple could have access to the PowerVR SGX543 and may be planning a powerful graphics engine with GPGPU acceleration for one of the next iPhones. Last year Apple licensed Imagination’s GPU technology blueprints and even invested in the company. Read more…

Rumor - 32GB iPhone and iPhone Nano in 2009?

That’s right, kind of. According to MacBlogz, they received an anonymous tip from a third party iPhone accessory manufacturer that Apple (AAPL) is planning to broaden it’s iPhone family line up by boosting storage capacity up to 32GB and maybe doing away with the 8GB model all together and it will be announced at MacWorld 2009.

This rumor is well supported with Samsung recently developing a 32GB NAND chip that will wrok perfectly in the iPhone. There are also rumors that Apple has been stock piling 50 million of these chips for soemtime now. Intel has also come out with a 64GB chip, so maybe the iPod Touch may get a bump too.

Apple working on iPhone Status Indicators via Dual Backlight Systems

Apple recently submitted a Patent that hopes to solve the problem of not being able to see new notifications (email, sms, IM etc) while your iPhone is asleep. Currently the only way to see if you have missed anything is to turn on the screen (and in some cases slide to unlock). Apple hopes to solve this in it’s next generation of iPhones by using two backlight systems. Read more…

Rumor - Adobe and ARM bringing Flash to the iPhone in 09?

Adobe Flash Player

Image via Wikipedia

Adobe and ARM have jointly announced that they are collaborating to optimize and enable Adobe Flash Player 10 and Adobe AIR for ARM Powered devices.

The collaboration is expected to accelerate mobile graphics and video
capabilities on ARM platforms to bring rich Internet applications and
Web services to mobile devices and consumer electronics worldwide.

This optimization is targeted at the existing ARM11 family (used in the iPhone)
and will be available in the second half of 2009. Details are rather
sparse, though the implication appears to be that this “optimization”
will deliver Adobe Flash to existing mobile devices that are based on
the latest ARM platforms.
