New iPhone Info. Leaked

Information has been leaked from a source inside AT&T regarding the new iPhone. The source who is “pretty high up in AT&Ts food chain” provided the following information to the BoyGeniusReport.

- New iPhone announcement around mid-June (duh)
- New iPhone will be faster and have a more seamless experience unmatched by any device (could be just talking about 3.0, but we think it’s also a new iPhone)
U-Verse iPhone application; will allow control of your home DVR (play, pause, rewind, etc.)
- The annual iPhone launch is “becoming a tradition.”
- Nothing official is being confirmed, but they said that people should prep for an exciting time this summer.
- AT&T is said to be working with Apple to create a unified product with an unparalleled experience across all their products and services.
- Apple’s 3.0 software should tell us where the iPhone platform is going… uh, k?
- They said customers shouldn’t need to choose from AT&T’s high-end devices because of features, they should choose based on preferences. The gap in capability should be filled with the new iPhone. Ok, bets on slide out QWERTY, autofocus camera, video sharing, blah blah?
- Seems like the higher speed HSDPA (7.2Mbps) is being hinted at too which should confirm the earlier rumors of the new Infineon chipset.
- The $99 3G netbook will start selling this summer, and the first one won’t be a Windows OS.

5-row QWERTY Keyboard

iPhone Developer, KennyTM has released another jailbreak app on Cydia for jailbroken iPhone users which adds another row (a 5th row) to iPhone’s virtual keyboard.

The jailbreak app is aptly called 5-Row QWERTY Keyboard.

KennyTM is the developer of one of our favorite jailbreak app hClipboard, which in our opinion is the best “Copy and Paste” solution for the iPhone.

KennyTM’s 5-Row QWERTY Keyboard adds another row of keys to iPhone’s virtual keyboard.

As you can see from the screenshot below, it adds a row of numbers to iPhone’s Qwerty keyboard like you have on the computer keyboard.

Tapping on the arrow button in the second row (which is used to turn caps lock on) gives you access to the symbols (such as !, @ etc) which are again arranged in the same order as those on the computer keyboard.

After you have installed 5-Row QWERTY Keyboard on your jailbroken iPhone using Cydia. You can enable the 5th row by going to Settings -> General -> Keyboard -> International Keyboards and swiping your finger to turn On 5 Row QWERTY keyboard (I observed that it was enabled by default).

Once it is enabled, you can switch to the 5 Row Qwerty keyboard by tapping on the Globe button.

This is a cool hack but the keys are adjusted to fit the additional row in the available space so the keys are quite cramped if you compare the spacing available in the original keyboard. So it might not be convenient for folks with thick fingers.

Hacked iPhone Gets A Keyboard

Apparently in reviews of the T-Mobile G1 vs the 3G Apple iPhone of the advantages listed was its physical QWERTY keyboard vs the iPhone virtual one.

It would seem that a certain iPhone owning hacker was none to pleased about that as he took that iPhone of his (jailbroken of course) & wired it up to an actual physical keyboard.

Hacked iPhone Gets Physical Keyboard

As you will see in the video, the iPhone hacker has taken his jailbroken iPhone and hacked it by wiring it up to a genuine physical keyboard using a custom cable

I personally don’t think this was necessary, but that’s just me…

Rumor - Apple insiders testing iPhone with slide out Qwerty quietly

Rumors are going around that Apple has developed and manufactured an iPhone (3G presumably) with a full slide out QWERTY keyboard like those found on other smart phones. No actual photos have surfaced (yet), nor specs of how the actual phone looks or how the slide mechanism works (again - yet), but knowing Apple, it’s design and function is sleek, intuitive and dead sexy.

I have speculated about the idea and suspected Apple introducing a QWERTY style iPhone for numerous reasons. Among them more screen real estate will be made available for writing/viewing documents/websites/emails with the keyboard moved to a separate physical location and also to satisfy a part of the (business) market that wants a full QWERTY they can touch with their fat money making thumbs.

Apple Store Online

According to Guy Kewney, (NewsWireless.Net) the testers are among some of the Carriers that currently carry the iPhone (and soon iPhone 3G), and are only in the hands of the big boys who can be trusted to keep things very quiet - and that of course means no leaked photos.

“Rumours from inside Cupertino suggest that Jobs himself doesn’t have this sort of religious hangup about his own work. Reports from inside mobile operators show that whether or not he ever makes it work, he is already trying to make a “slide-out” keyboard for a corporate version of the iPhone.

If this version does appear on the market, it won’t be this year, and certainly won’t be aimed at the consumer market. Consumers love the sleek, elegant design of the iPhone, and quickly fall in love with the on-screen keyboard.

But Steve Jobs can do the sums. In America, iPhone has perhaps overtaken Blackberry in total sales - but these sales are in what they call “the executive corridor.”

Well I have done a quick design of what I think we could be looking at, of course Apple will engineer and layout the Keyboard better than I have. But this gives you a nice idea of what it may look like. I personally would love Apple to make this, not that I need it, but I think the variety will help establish Apple in the market and give consumers the choice of virtual the virtual Multi Touch keyboard vs Apples take on the traditional QWERTY.
