iPhone 3G Unlock Officially Announced - Code Name: Yellowsn0w - Release Date: News Years Eve

‘Tis the Season to be Jolly!

Now that you guys have got used to the sunburn and blindness caused by the glare of the Dev Taems new blog template, we can get back to normal business. We’ll give you some updates and also tell you our schedule for the festive season.

Over the Christmas break some of the Dev Team members will be talking at the Chaos Computer Club’s 25C3 Congress. This talk will be a juicy technical talk relating to iPhone platform and their previous exploits. You can see more information about the talk “Hacking the iPhone”. There is even a super-cool TeamPwnapple T-Shirt ;-)

The Dev Team have been working hard on a few other things. The main one being the 3G unlock codenamed “yellowsn0w”. This is now completed and is currently being packaged into a user-friendly application with the simplicity that you see in QuickPwn or BootNeuter.

* The target release date for the unlock is New Year’s Eve 2008.
* This unlock method is available to iPhone 3Gs that have 2.11.07 baseband or earlier, they did warn you.
* The unlock requires a jailbroken 3G iPhone.

DFU Problems

Lots of users have been experiencing problems with the use of DFU mode after applying yesterday’s 10.5.6 system update.

The Dev’s believe this behavior is due to a kernel bug not a specific countermeasure by Apple. Possible fixes are (try at your own risk!) -

1. Replace the following plugin kexts from within IOUSBFamily.kext with the ones from 10.5.5 and then rebuild kextcache (if you don’t understand this, then you shouldn’t attempt it!)

/System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBHub.kext

/System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext

2. Use a USB hub in-between the DFU device and the Mac and insert/reinsert the iPhone’s USB cable.

3. Use a PwnageTool created .ipsw on Windows! Oh the irony!

iPod touch 2G

Currently the Dev Team are not investigating the iPod touch 2G. Other people outside the Dev-Team are looking into this, but they are not at the moment. Please don’t hassle them with comments and requests about this, they’ll just be deleted and ignored. If they do look at this device it will be sometime in the New Year and they’ll inform you guys if and when they commence this work.

The Dev Team would like to reiterate that this is not because -

1. They are mean
2. They are turning our back on the iPod touch community
3. They have been paid off by JFK, Princess Diana or Elvis

This is because -

1. They have been busy with the 3G unlock.
2. They have been busy with the CCC talk.
3. Only one of them has a iPod touch 2G (but we’ll see what Santa brings)
4. Their employers don’t get as excited as us about hacking expensive pretty devices
5. Unfortunately their partners, parents and pets need occasional attention too.

Great news!!

New Mac OS X 10.5.6 update doesnt recognize iPhones in DFU Mode - Fix on the way

The Best

Apple released an Mac OS X update 10.5.6 that seems to disable your Mac from detecting your iPhone or iPod Touch in DFU mode. Unfortunately this is critical if you are using PWNAGE or QuickPWN on your Mac to unlock your iPhone or jailbreak your iPhone 3G and Touch. This is also bad news if the new iPhone 3G method will require DFU mode to load a custom unlocked ipsw via iTunes.

MuscleNerd from the Dev Team has stated that one work around is the following:

The simplest workaround I’ve heard of for the DFU issue is to copy one or two of the 10.5.5 frameworks files over the newer ones.

Seeing that I have already updated my Mac Mini and my new MacBook Aluminum probably already has OS X 10.5.6 I will be faced with this problem myself and will be sure to post a fix as soon as I find one. Stay tuned for more info.

Interview with one of the iPhone Dev Team about the Team, iPhone 3G and 2.2

Here is an interview that I found on iPhoneHellas.gr with a Hungarian member of the iPhone Dev Team, as published by the Hungarian Appleblog.blog.hu. Some great insight into the inner workings of the Dev Team, how they share the work load, who they are, where they are from and when/if/how will they unlock the iPhone 3G:

First of all congrats for the job you did so far, but I think you already know that half of the world is supporting you!

Thanks! Me and my wife read your blog, and after you wrote about the Dev Team, we thought it would be a good idea to find you. Your blog is the first hungarian language blog or newsportal we communicate to directly. Read more…

iPhone Dev Team Release PWNAGE and QuickPWN for firmware 2.1 and iTunes 8

Here are the new versions of PwnageTool and QuickPwn that support the 2.1 firmware.  And as we just mentioned, iTunes was not harmed in the process ;-) no patching was required:

Important update
Hmm well Thomas Ricker has put our fate in your hands. Please vote in his
poll!
Should The Dev Team press on? Or just throw in the towel?  Do “rogue” applications like Cycorder, NES.app (and the other console emulators) — and all the other applications that Apple won’t approve — matter?  That includes unlocking :)

iPhone Dev Team working on new PWANGE Tool for iTunes 8

Apple seems to be playing the cat and mouse again with iTunes 8. They have coded in some countermeasures to the Dev Teams PWNAGE Tool. If you try to PWN/restore your device with a custom firmware, that has not been pwned before with iTunes 8 you will get one of a few errors. The Dev Team have said that PWNAGE Tool will require a hardware upgrade to stop PWNAGE from working, and that this is meerly a speedbump in the road to freedom. Read more below:

“Countermeasures

If you’ve been following the technical aspects of our blog since July, you may have noticed that we’ve asserted multiple times that Apple can’t fix the bug we’ve exploited in PwnageTool unless they fix their hardware.

That hardware fact is still true.  But one way they can try to combat Pwnage for existing hardware is to program iTunes to detect and prevent the Pwnage exploit.  In fact, they’ve already done that in iTunes 8.  The screenshot below from iTunes 8 using a Pwned ipsw (with an unPwned device attached) is one example.

countermeasure

The nice thing about iTunes decisions is that we can provide you with patches to counter them.  We have one such patch already for Mac iTunes 8 for iPod touch.  We’ll be working out the full suite of patches for all the combinations over the next week.

Here are 2 screenshots that Apple doesn’t want you to see.  Notice the Terminal icon at the end of:

Then once we’ve launched it, despite mobiledevice’s best intentions:”

iTunes 8 - Grid View, Genius Bar, Trippy Visuals and PWNAGE

Update Below iTunes 8 is now available and I wasted no dive diving in to see what the big deal was about. Firstly the 36MB install went smoothly and from the get go I noticed some new graphics and new colors. After it imported my music, podcasts etc first thing I did was try out the new Genius Bar. It scanned my music library and sent it off to big brother.

Once that was complete any song you select the genius bar on the right suggests albums, songs and playlists. Cool. The next thing I checked out was the new visualizations and all I can say is WOW. Talk about Acid Trip. Who ever created this, I want whatever he is on, this is amazing. (check the video I made, but please turn down your speakers, I don’t know what happened to the audio in Cycorder )

The last and not least, I tried PWNing an iPhone with iTunes 8 - Not working. Error 1600. (updated below). PWNING with iTunes 8 only works from Restore Mode.

PWNAGE Tool 2.0.3 Buggy - Fix Coming Soon - QuickPWN RC2 Released

The Dev Team released PWNAGE Tool 2.0.3 yesterday for creating custom 2.0.2 firmware files for your iPhone and iPod Touch and a new QuickPWN for quick and easy Jialbreaking of your device. Their release was not without hiccups as there were many users (including myself), having trouble with permissions, passwods not being saved and Cydia not installing apps. I was able to find a couple solutions to the problems and posted them in the forum.

The Dev Team have since announced that they will be releasing an Update to PWNAGE Tool 2.0.3 sometime soon that will be delivered via the a sparkle update in PWNAGE.

Swatting…

We’ve had some issues with iPod touch devices and the latest version of PwnageTool for the Mac, in certain conditions incorrect permissions will be used and the keychain doesn’t save passwords. So hold on and wait for the next release, we’ll push out the updated version via Sparkle as soon as it is tested (it is being tested right now). We have also encountered some issues with the Windows Beta of QuickPwn, and we have a release candidate here that should fix the issues seen with 64-bit Windows versions and should be able to be used with all versions of Windows, but as with all beta software other bugs may be present.
There were also some users who reported problems with QuickPWN  and the Dev Team have released an updated version called QuickPWN RC2 that should fix these problems.
