Jailbird, a new windows jailbreaking application for the iPhone (2G & 3G) and iPod touch, is currently under development. Unfortunately Jailbird will not unlock your iPhone (2G) like PWNAGE Tool from the Dev Team (by installing BootNeuter) but if your 2G iPhone is already unlocked, you can use this on your windows PC to create custom 2.0-2.2 firmwares with the ability to adjust the partition size, then if you must install BootNeuter via Cydia.

Anyhooo - This will be great for quick restores back to a custom firmware (quicker than restoring then using quickpwn). Jailbird will as stated jailbreak the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch which will allow you to install non AppStore software from Installer and Cydia. There is currently no iPod Touch 2G jailbreak, and no redsn0wisn’t the 2GTouch jailbreak either. but it looks like I was wrong and redsn0w IS the iPod 2G Touch jailbreak, stay tuned for more info.

Anyway back on point, lets hope Jailbird is released soon and works well and makes life a little easier for our friends out there with PC’s.

If you frequent the iPhone Dev Team Blog, then this is no new news to you, but of you are everyone else, you will regoice with the news posted by MuscleNerd (a Dev Team member) that they have made significant progress and are looking to release a software unlock for the iPhone 3G some time after Christmas.

The news came in the comments of their blog and read as follows:

User: haven’t seen a funday for about 2 weeks~~are you prepareing for a “big” update?

MuscleNerd: Yep:)… Right now for 02.11.07 we have some untested ideas. Ideally we’d have something solid by the end of next week, but if we don’t then it would be a staged release, with 01.45.00 first out of the gate… Target date is a few days after Christmas … I’m going to try doing a live qik broadcast from my iphone before then…I have qik configured to announce it via my twitter when it starts.

I made a request via Twitter to Muscle Nerd to ask him a few questions about the iPhone 3G unlock, no details, but I think it would be nice to be able to poke and prod around the mind of one of the Dev’s.

The iPhone 3G unlock will only work on those with iPhone Modem firmware (baseband) 01.45.00, other newer baseband unlocks will eb released when they are ready. (we told you not to update unless via pwnage)

The delay raises some questions though, as someone who sold and unlocked iPhone’s in the past, I and others truly believe that this delay is to stop iPhone resellers and unlockers from making a gazillion dollars off an iPhone 3G unlock at this time of year. The new PWNAGE Tool would be sold and services of unlocking the 3G and selling unlocked 3G would make allot of people allot of money with the Dev Team doing all of the hard work. And as in the past they frown upon this, and rightfully so. I personally have stopped charging for unlocking iPhones (and have really stopped offering this service completely) as it is soooooo easy now (even my mom can do it), so I and hopefully others will make as many free and easy tutorials for the users to update via PWNAGE and unlock their 3G’s themselves.

The iPhone Dev Team have wasted no time in updating their iPhone unlocking, jailbreaking and hactivating tool to work with firmware 2.2 released last week Friday. The latest post on their blog outlines allot of useful info and I would suggest that you head over there and read the latest post. Here is the summary.

1. Don’t Update your 3G via iTunes if you want an unlock in the future.
2. The latest PWNAGE and QuickPWN can NOT unlock your iPhone 3G.
3. The latest PWNAGE Tool and QuickPWN can NOT work on the 2G iPod Touch.
4. The ‘late 2008’ MacBook/air/pro line of computers have an issue with DFU mode, it is possible to go from Pwned 2.1 -> 2.2 but going from stock to Pwned does not work, if in any doubt use a different machine. - Be careful.
5. Simple Mode’ in PwnageTool currently only works for the iPod Touch.
6. To use PwnageTool for iPhones you will need to use ‘Expert mode’.
7. You will also need to change the partition size to about 1000MB (type in the value or use the slider).

Regarding the unlocking of the iPhone 3G here is the latest  notes from the Dev Team about updating to 2.2 via iTunes and how it may affect a software unlock int eh future:

Locked iPhone 3G - Preserve Baseband

This applies if you have a locked iPhone 3G and you wish to update to 2.2 but preserve the iPhone’s current baseband software. Preserving the baseband will give you the maximum chance for any upcoming software unlock. To upgrade your phone to 2.2 and preserve the state of the
baseband you need to create a custom .ipsw with PwnageTool. This custom .ipsw will not contain the baseband update but of course will still allow all the cool new stuff from 2.2.

There are plenty of tutorials about this process on the web, but PwnageTool contains intuitive graphics and easy to follow prompts that should have you up and running in no time at all

PwnageTool 2.0.3 is now available either as a update in PWNAGE (courtesy Sparkle) on your Mac or you can download it directly from here. (Dev Team Server Link)

This new version of PwnageTool supports iPhone/iPod firmware 2.0.2 5C1. It also comes with a new updated Installer Beta vb6 and Cydia of course. The application must be downloaded as a .tbz file from the Dev Team Servers (above) and must NOT be decompressed using “the unarchiver”, use OS X’s built in ‘Archive Utility’ to decompress the file.

PWNAGE Tool 2.03 will create a custom iPhone/Touch firmware that you can choose to Jailbreak and Activate your device, install Cydia and/or Installer.app and run BootNeuter to unlock your First Gen iPhone on firmware 2.0.2 build 5C1. Unfortunately it will NOT unlock your/my iPhone 3G baseband, but it will jailbreak it and allow you to run great apps like Cycorder and Winterboard.

Update: I am having problems with passwords being saved for email, wifi and other things. I will try to chenge permissions of var/keychain to 0777 and see if that helps.

The Dev Team have updated their blog again today to answer the hundreds of questions of when the new PWNAGE Tool will be released. It is coming Friday and it will include the new Installer 4 and will unlock first gen iPhones and only jailbreak/activate the iPhone 3G. It seems that rather than release two separate updates to PWNAGE they will release a final version tomorrow that will include Installer 4 and hopefully it will be full of great new repo sources form all the developers we love.

Installer 4 and PwnageTool 2.0.2

We’ve just had word that our friends at RiPDev almost have Installer 4 (Beta) ready for public beta release, with that awesome news we’ve decided to include it in the PwnageTool 2.0.2 release, we are waiting for the software from them and we need to quickly test and add a small couple of changes that go alongside Installer.

Usually we don’t give release dates, this is so we don’t feel pressured into releasing something if it isn’t ready, or we can hold off if something comes up in the last minute (last time this was the addition of the 3G jailbreak), today we thought we were releasing, and you guys seemed restless (we read the comments) so we said “sometime today”.

We think the Installer 4 beta is big news, and I’m sure lots of you guys want it and because of this the release should now take place sometime tomorrow (Friday), we want to do all this in one hit, we don’t want to make two releases in two days (we all have day jobs too!).

We don’t want to keep you guys refreshing and commenting to ask where the latest update is, so we thought we’d just tell you now.

Please don’t wait up for us, PwnageTool 2.0.1 with shiny new stuff is coming very soon.

Great news!! lets hope that Apple doesn’t release 2.1 between now and then

The Dev Team have posted an update since the release of iPhone firmware 2.0.1 saying that they are working hard at ironing out the few of the upgrades made to their PWNAGE Tool. In the meanwhile it is strongly advised that you DO NOT update if you have a iPhone 3G and are planning to unlock it some time soon as the baseband will be upgraded. First Gen iPhone owners should also wait on a new PWNAGE Tool that the dev’s say will keep our first gen iPhones completely free and unlocked.

As soon as testing is finished a PwnageTool update will be released that will allow you to safely update either device with all current PwnageTool features still in place and you’ll have the option to disable the baseband update.

Everything works great, Phone calls, SMS, EMail, YouTube, AppStore, iTunes Sync etc. Only problem is that I either need to patch my Caller Id AppSupport for Trinidad & Tobago or edit all my numbers to include +1(868), but with Cydia on there, this should be available for download and install soon or I or someone will create the needed .plist and you can install it over OpenSSH.

Highly recommended upgrade if you can live without Installer. Very Very easy software to use. This version of PWNED is the easiest jailbreak/activation/unlock Tool yet.

I hope it’s not just his present and he can’t share. I just hope that I get my 3G in time to test it out, if not I have a couple iPhones and Touches here that are definitely going to make the jump to 2.0 or get jailbreaked if they are there already like my trusty Touch.
