iPhone 4G may use Infineon one-chip

Infineon quietly introduced a new transceiver chip that may make it’s way into an iPhone in the future that will run on the new 4G network. The SMARTi LU is said to be the first single-chip radio to include the new Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard for 4G Internet access. It also includes the advanced HSPA+ standard for 3G as well as support for EDGE data and GSM calling. Interestingly a baseband interface is also built-in, the company notes, maybe this will eb useful to the iPhone Dev Team one day.

4G technology in a new iPhone could mean speeds as high as150Mbps download and upload speeds as high as 50Mbps - about 100x faster than most 3G networks. Infineon hasn’t announced a release date, but samples and tests will be at the Mobile World Congress show in February.

Apple has always used Infineon transceivers in it’s iPhone, although a recent rumor suggests Apple may switch to Broadcom, only time will tell if this new technology from Infineon will make it into a next gen iPhone.

iPhone 3G Unlock Officially Announced - Code Name: Yellowsn0w - Release Date: News Years Eve

‘Tis the Season to be Jolly!

Now that you guys have got used to the sunburn and blindness caused by the glare of the Dev Taems new blog template, we can get back to normal business. We’ll give you some updates and also tell you our schedule for the festive season.

Over the Christmas break some of the Dev Team members will be talking at the Chaos Computer Club’s 25C3 Congress. This talk will be a juicy technical talk relating to iPhone platform and their previous exploits. You can see more information about the talk “Hacking the iPhone”. There is even a super-cool TeamPwnapple T-Shirt ;-)

The Dev Team have been working hard on a few other things. The main one being the 3G unlock codenamed “yellowsn0w”. This is now completed and is currently being packaged into a user-friendly application with the simplicity that you see in QuickPwn or BootNeuter.

* The target release date for the unlock is New Year’s Eve 2008.
* This unlock method is available to iPhone 3Gs that have 2.11.07 baseband or earlier, they did warn you.
* The unlock requires a jailbroken 3G iPhone.

DFU Problems

Lots of users have been experiencing problems with the use of DFU mode after applying yesterday’s 10.5.6 system update.

The Dev’s believe this behavior is due to a kernel bug not a specific countermeasure by Apple. Possible fixes are (try at your own risk!) -

1. Replace the following plugin kexts from within IOUSBFamily.kext with the ones from 10.5.5 and then rebuild kextcache (if you don’t understand this, then you shouldn’t attempt it!)

/System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBHub.kext

/System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext

2. Use a USB hub in-between the DFU device and the Mac and insert/reinsert the iPhone’s USB cable.

3. Use a PwnageTool created .ipsw on Windows! Oh the irony!

iPod touch 2G

Currently the Dev Team are not investigating the iPod touch 2G. Other people outside the Dev-Team are looking into this, but they are not at the moment. Please don’t hassle them with comments and requests about this, they’ll just be deleted and ignored. If they do look at this device it will be sometime in the New Year and they’ll inform you guys if and when they commence this work.

The Dev Team would like to reiterate that this is not because -

1. They are mean
2. They are turning our back on the iPod touch community
3. They have been paid off by JFK, Princess Diana or Elvis

This is because -

1. They have been busy with the 3G unlock.
2. They have been busy with the CCC talk.
3. Only one of them has a iPod touch 2G (but we’ll see what Santa brings)
4. Their employers don’t get as excited as us about hacking expensive pretty devices
5. Unfortunately their partners, parents and pets need occasional attention too.

Great news!!

Apple working on iPhone Status Indicators via Dual Backlight Systems

Apple recently submitted a Patent that hopes to solve the problem of not being able to see new notifications (email, sms, IM etc) while your iPhone is asleep. Currently the only way to see if you have missed anything is to turn on the screen (and in some cases slide to unlock). Apple hopes to solve this in it’s next generation of iPhones by using two backlight systems. Read more…

Rumor - Adobe and ARM bringing Flash to the iPhone in 09?

Adobe Flash Player

Image via Wikipedia

Adobe and ARM have jointly announced that they are collaborating to optimize and enable Adobe Flash Player 10 and Adobe AIR for ARM Powered devices.

The collaboration is expected to accelerate mobile graphics and video
capabilities on ARM platforms to bring rich Internet applications and
Web services to mobile devices and consumer electronics worldwide.

This optimization is targeted at the existing ARM11 family (used in the iPhone)
and will be available in the second half of 2009. Details are rather
sparse, though the implication appears to be that this “optimization”
will deliver Adobe Flash to existing mobile devices that are based on
the latest ARM platforms.

Apple is now World’s 3rd Largest Mobile Phone Supplier - In Terms of Revenue

{{de|Steve Jobs auf der Macworld in San Franci...

Image via Wikipedia

Steve Jobs took the mic today at Apple’s conference call discussing Q4 - 2008 financial results.

Steve Jobs says that Apple has sold 6.9M iPhone 3G’s last quarter, that’s more than RIM (BlackBerry) who managed 6.1M in phone sales this last quarter. He also mentioned that Apple is now the World’s 3rd largest mobile phone supplier - in terms of revenue generating $4.6 billion in sales revenue from the iPhone 3G. Nokia and Samsung are first and second respectively while LG and Motorola are fourth and fifth.

(Apple had mobile sales of $4.6 billion for the quarter, Apple is ahead of Sony Ericsson $4.2 billion, LG at $3.4 billion, Motorola with $3.2 billion, and seventh place RIM at $2.1 billion.)

Apple has surpassed its 10M iPhone goal for 2008/9. Steve also mentioned that Apple has no plans to go forward with NetBooks or Tablets saying that the iPhone/Touch covers that market.

Other interesting things mentioned were that AppStore customers downloaded almost 200 million apps from the App Store by tomorrow, with the figure being reached in just 102 days. There are over 5,500 apps in 62 countries. “Competitors are scrambling to copy the App Store, but it’s not easy,” Jobs adds.

10 Million iPhones Sold, iPhone 3G second Best-selling Mobile Handset in US, Steve Jobs is NOT Dead and Apple Stocks continue to fall

Apple analysts issued a report recently suggesting that Apple has already hit their target of selling 10,000,000 (that’s right ten million) iPhones world wide by the end of 2008 a few months early. The iPhone 3G is available in over 70 countries world wide and is even sold officially unlocked in Hong Kong Apple Stores and Online.

In other news, a recent report on AppleInsider indicates that according to NPD the iPhone 3G is now the second best-selling mobile handset in the United States (and I am sure in many other countries too). The Apple iPhone 3G is second place the the Motorola Razr V3 according to US sales charts. More importantly these same charts show that the iPhone 3G is now the top selling smartphone, outselling the BlackBerry Curve, Pearl and Palm Centro.

Last week a malicious rumor was started and posted on many iPhone and Apple News Blogs reporting that Steve Jobs suffered a massive heart attack and was rushed to the hospital. I choose not to post the news, even if they were true I wanted to make sure they came from an Apple announcement. These rumors were thankfully false and Apple CEO, Steve Jobs is in good health according to a Apple PR. Regardless the Apple stocks (AAPL: 223.44 -0.30%) fell almost 10 points that Friday before recovering slightly, but since then the (AAPL: 223.44 -0.30%) stock price continues to fall.

This rumor shows how affected Apple Stock Price is on the health of Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs and how closely he is tied to it’s future and success. This is very unsettling to investors and I personally think this is being reflected in Apple (AAPL: 223.44 -0.30%) stock value recently, and the recent US stock market down turn isn’t helping either. But this all still comes after Apple has had one of it’s best overall sales years for iMac’s Laptops, iPods and of course iPhones.

Let’s all hope that with Steve Jobs himself unveiling the rumored “Brick”, along with Apple’s new improved, cheaper MacBook line and maybe some sort of Touch Tablet will help increase some confidence in Apple Stocks (AAPL: 223.44 -0.30%) and more so, the CEO’s health.
