Voice Control on iPhone 2G/3G

Voice Control is an exclusive feature of iPhone 3GS which enables its users to make phone calls and play music by using voice commands. Some folks over at this forum have released a Voice Control look-alike app for iPhone 3G and iPhone 2G which works and looks almost exactly as it is on iPhone 3GS.

Voice Control

Step 1: Download WinSCP on Windows or Cyberduck on Mac.

Step 2: Make sure you have OpenSSH installed on your iPhone:

  • Open Cydia. Touch on “Search” tab and then search for “OpenSSH”.

AT&T iPhone Exclusivity Ending?

Apple’s worldwide single-carrier exclusivity model for each nation is seen as fleeting, as a new report suggests the iPhone could be available for carriers other than AT&T in the U.S. within a year.

In his latest note to investors, Gene Munster, senior research analyst with Piper Jaffray, takes on 14 “unanswered questions” that surround Apple. They address the company’s financial guidance, the iPhone, iTunes, iPods and Apple retail stores. One prediction suggests Apple would add new iPhone carriers in the U.S. with the debut of a new product in the summer of 2010.

“For various reasons the company moved from an exclusive relationship with French wireless carrier Orange to a multi-carrier model,” Munster said. “In France, the company now enjoys dramatically higher market share (in the 40 percent range vs. about 15 percent in ROW) than in countries with exclusive carrier agreements (such as AT&T in the U.S. where the iPhone has market share in the mid-teens). We believe Apple is seeing the increased unit sell-through more than offset the slightly (~10 percent) deteriorated economics per unit involved in non-exclusive agreements.”

This as the iPhone 3GS has had an outstanding launch, with Apple having trouble keeping the device in stock. The Piper Jaffray report states that the new iteration of the iPhone “seems to have exceeded Apple’s internal expectations.” Additionally, Munster does not believe Apple will offer another model below the $99 iPhone 3G with a cheap, mass-market device. Noting that $10 basic phone models dominate markets like India, he said Apple would likely pass on that segment of the market.

The Piper Jaffray analyst is not alone in believing the iPhone could jump ship next year, as others believe Apple is looking to Verizon as a possible alternative. Even Denny Strigle, Verizon’s president, has been complimentary of the iPhone this year, as his company is rumored to be fast-trackingits new 4G network for launch by early 2010. AT&T, meanwhile, is said to be continuing its negotiations with Apple, in an attempt to keep the iPhone exclusive through 2011. While customers have been extremely satisfied with Apple’s phone and have embraced it, many U.S. customers have been disappointed with the AT&T network.

In his report, Munster also believes that Apple is dissatisfied with the current status of video content offered in iTunes. Specifically, he said the video store is lacking HBO and is often tied to limited movie availability periods.

“We believe Apple is unhappy with the current status of video on the iTunes Store and is working to change it,” Munster said. “These changes, however, will take time, in the form of lengthy negotiations, in order to bring the rights for TV and movies up to speed in a digital world.”

Munster believes that Apple will eventually offer a monthly subscription offer for TV shows on iTunes. At a cost of $30 to $40 a month, he said the company could offer unlimited access to content from network and cable providers. If the Cupertino, Calif., company were to offer a subscription model, he believes it would replace a consumer’s cable bill.

“While timing on the launch of such a new product is very uncertain given the negotiations that would need to take place, Apple may work to launch it simultaneously with a new version of Apple TV, or an undated Apple TV software within the next year,” he said. “Moreover, we believe Apple has wisely avoided a subscription music model, as music listeners prefer to listen to their own music, and listen to it frequently. Movie watchers, on the other hand, prefer to rent, and typically only want to see a movie once or twice. Likewise, TV viewers are not accustomed to purchasing TV shows on an a-la-carte basis, and a subscription TV service would likely be more appealing.”

Multi-Touch Click-Wheels?

Having pioneered multi-touch for its iPhone and iPod touch handhelds, Apple later extended the technology to trackpads on its Mac notebook line and now appears ripe to introduce the first iPod click-wheels with similar capabilities.

Though sales of the iPod touch have taken off in recent quarters, recent reports suggest that we haven’t seen the last of click-wheel-based iPods, the next of which is expected to turn up this fall in the form of a fifth-generation iPod nano with a built-in digital camera and more compact circular scroll wheel.

This new nano could be the first iPod support multi-touch gestures through its click-wheel, according to recent patent filing discovered by AppleInsider this week that details methods for detecting “input gestures that traverse the center of the scroll wheel and to detect multi-touch input.”

More specifically, the 38-page filing made just this past September describes a “multi-dimensional scroll wheel” that “can sense a moving object, such as a finger, as it is moved not only in a rotational manner but also in a linear manner across the center of the scroll wheel.” This new breed of scroll wheel would also be capable of sensing more than one object at a time, such as multi-finger touch or motion.

“Applications can be enhanced by the improved range of input enabled by the scroll wheel circuitry,” Apple explained. “For example, linear motion, such as a swipe across the scroll wheel, can enable an image browsing application to cause images, such as album cover pictures for example, to be transitioned across a screen.”

Multi-touch input, such as one finger touching an inner region of the scroll and another finger rotating in the outer region, can also enable a zooming application to cause a displayed image to be zoomed-in or out, depending on the direction of the rotation. Similarly, a pinching or expanding of a user’s fingers can enable the zooming application to cause a zooming action.

“The scroll wheel circuitry can also bias the sensor element configuration according to the type of input event expected,” the filing adds. “For example, if a particular application permits only linear motion input along a particular axis (e.g., a horizontal or vertical swipe), the scroll wheel circuitry can utilize only the sensor elements arranged along that path to sense for an input event. By using less than all available sensor elements in this manner, the scroll wheel circuitry can achieve power savings.”

The filing is credited to over half a dozen Apple engineers, including Lakshman Rathnam, Louis Bokma, Fletcher Rothkopf, Andrea Mucignat, Erturk Kocalar, Benjamin Lyon and Joseph Fisher.

Three New iPhone Models? | iPod shuffle Only Costs $21.77 To Make

The Commercial Times has published a report which expects Apple to launch three different iPhone models in June. They believe that a 2.75G (EDGE) version, an upgraded 3G version and a China-oriented model (CDMA?) are being worked on. Its likely that the 2.75G (Edge) model would be intended for the budget minded consumer. Its believed that the form factor will remain the same.

The report estimates an initial production run of 4 million units.

(via Gizmodo.com)

An iSuppli teardown estimates the cost of the shuffle’s components, the headphones, and the packaging it ships in at $21.77.

Business Week says ‘that’s about 28% of the device’s retail price. The smaller the component cost as a percentage of price, the higher the potential profit. This suggests the per-unit profit margin on the shuffle is higher than on other iPod models. The component cost for the first iPod touch released in 2007, for instance, amounted to about $147, or about 49% of its $299 retail price. The component cost of the third-generation iPod nano, also released in 2007, amounted to about 40% of its retail price.’

The main application chip used in the device is made by Samsung. Other suppliers include Toshiba, Hynix Semiconductor, On Semiconductor, NXP Semiconductor, and Texas Instruments.

Report: Apple’s Restrictions Drove U2 To RIM | iTunes 8.1.1 Released

Apple’s penchant for keeping its partners out of the loop reportedly cost the company its relationship with alternative rock band U2, which recently drew sponsorship from rival smartphone market Research in Motion.

According to a report in the GlobeAndMail, Toronto-based radio DJ Alan Cross recently came face-to-face with Bono following a secret concert in Boston where he struck up a conversation with the U2 frontman about the band’s new partnership with RIM.

“I’m very excited about this,” Bono is reported to have said. “Research In Motion is going to give us what Apple wouldn’t — access to their labs and their people so we can do something really spectacular.”

Asked whether this had something to do with a new application U2 wanted to create to allow fans to interact with the band as part of its “U2 360″ tour, Bono reportedly said, “You’re not far off,” before disappearing into a crowd of people.

Last month, U2 announced that the new tour — expected to be its biggest yet – would be sponsored by Research In Motion’s BlackBerry line of smartphones, distancing itself from its one-time ally in the iPod maker.

“This tour announcement marks the first stage of a relationship and shared vision between RIM and U2 that we expect will lead to new and innovative ways to enhance the mobile music experience on the BlackBerry platform for U2 fans,” said U2’s manager Paul McGuinness. “We look forward to sharing more details as the relationship unfolds.”

In October 2004 Apple and the band hosted a special event together to introduce the new black and red iPod U2 Special Edition.

“U2 is one of the greatest bands in the world and we are floored to be working with them,” Apple chief executive Steve Jobs said at the time. “We just want to make some innovative products together, and we hope U2 fans will love having their very own special edition iPod.”

The partnership continued to blossom the following year when U2 helped launch the new iPod video with an ad campaign featuring a live music video for the track “Original of the Species.” In June 2006, yet another product emerged as a result of the partnership: a U2 branded video iPod.

U2’s Bono was also believed to be instrumental in compelling Apple to release several (Product) Red-braned iPods (1234), a portion of the sales of which went to help benefit the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Next Generation iPhone may have FM Transmittor

Oh, what is this? In addition to the previously unearthed features, the next generation iPhone’s guts will have full FM transmission and reception capabilities, according to its spec sheet:

The BCM4329 includes both FM transmit and receive capabilities. FM transmit enables consumers to stream music directly from a personal media players (PMPs) or mobile phone to car stereos or home theater systems without having to purchase special adapters or use bulky cables. FM receive is already a popular feature that enables consumers to obtain real-time traffic information as well as listen to music, news and sports broadcasts on their mobile phones.

Right now, the iPhone can pick FM signals from devices like the Nike+, but this really makes things interesting. I’m not interested in listening to radio or news—although many have been demanding this capability in iPods for ages—but I can’t wait for the built-in transmission to the car stereo, as well as real-time traffic information data everywhere, independently of the 3G connectivity.
