iPhone 2G/3G Video Recording Apps

Lately there has been alot of video recording apps released in the App Store that delivers for iPhone 2G & 3G owners that Apple neglected. Here’s a run down of them all against the incumbant Cycorder from Cydia creator Saurik.

Frames Per Second (maximum)
iVideoCamera - 3
Camcorder - N/A
iVidCam - 7
Cycorder - 15

Length
iVideoCamera - 1:00
Camcorder - long as space holds
iVidCam - long as space holds
Cycorder - long as space holds

Resolution
iVideoCamera - 160×213
Camcorder - 320×426
iVidCam - 360×280
Cycorder - 384×288

Price
iVideoCamera - $0.99
Camcorder - $0.99
iVidCam - $1.99
Cycorder - free

My thoughts are that iVideoCamera was 1st but now looks like the worst. Only 3 frames per second, for a minute & the smallest resolution makes it to me an easy avoid.

Camcorder was aright. Better than iVideoCamera but with no ability to transfer your videos anywhere doesn’t make it cut in my book.

iVidCam was the next to come. Out of the non-jailbroken available video recorders it has the best maximum FPS, matches Camcorder for video length but beats it for resolution.

Then of course there’s Cycorder, which is available only via jailbreaking. It has more than twice the maximum frames per second than any other video recording app available (only beaten by the 3GS’s 30 FPS), ties with Camcorder & iVidCam in terms of video length and beats them with resoution. To top it all off, its free.

So I think the choice is obvious, if you’ve jailbroken your iPhone 2G & 3G & already have Cycorder then there’s no need to get rid of it. If you don’t already have it, then get it. However if you aren’t tech savy enough to jailbreak an iPhone then I think you’d be happy with iVidCam.

Voice Control on iPhone 2G/3G

Voice Control is an exclusive feature of iPhone 3GS which enables its users to make phone calls and play music by using voice commands. Some folks over at this forum have released a Voice Control look-alike app for iPhone 3G and iPhone 2G which works and looks almost exactly as it is on iPhone 3GS.

Voice Control

Step 1: Download WinSCP on Windows or Cyberduck on Mac.

Step 2: Make sure you have OpenSSH installed on your iPhone:

  • Open Cydia. Touch on “Search” tab and then search for “OpenSSH”.

OpenSSH

  • Install “OpenSSH” and reboot your iPhone.

Step 3: Connect your iPhone with your computer. Make sure iTunes is not running.

Step 4: Start WinSCP on Windows or Cyberduck if you are on a Mac and enter the following details to login to your phone:

  • Hostname: The IP address of your iPhone. Setting –> WiFi –> <Your Network Name>
  • User name: root
  • Password: alpine
  • Protocol: SCP

Step 5: Once you have logged in, browse to /<root>/Applications directory on your iPhone.

Step 6: Download VoiceControl.zip. Extract “Voice Control.app” and copy it to your iPhone in this directory: /<root>/Applications

Step 7: Right-click on “Voice Control.app” which you just copied, click on Properties and change the permission to 755. Make sure you check “Set group, owner and permissions recursively” option as shown below:

That’s it! Restart your iPhone and you should now have a new app named “Voice Control” on your springboard. Start this new application on your iPhone 3G or 2G and simply search through your contacts, music and bookmarks by using voice commands just like iPhone 3GS!

If you rather just install it via Cydia its available via the BeYouriPhone repo at http://repo.beyouriphone.com. Look for Controllo Vocale (yes this version is Italian)

ActivateMMS2G Brings MMS To iPhone (2G)s

Released today via Cydia. Though I’ve tried it personally with no results. So far its pretty successful at bringing the MMS interface to a 2G iPhone in the Messages & Photos apps. Maybe its a local issue…

Update
After playing around with it a little more & some luck I was able to get it to work! For those wanting to have MMS on their iPhone (2G) (even though Apple said it would not be possible) these are the (bmobile (Trinidad & Tobago)) settings:

-APN: mms
-MMSC:
http://192.168.210.104/mmrelay.app
-MMS Proxy: 192.168.210.104:8080

I’d like to thank my friend Zane for initially telling me about this being available in Cydia as well providing me with those settings, which took a little tinkering to get working properly. Also Kevon, who commeneted on this subject.

iPhone OS 3.0 Video/Video Editing on iPhone 2G & 3G?

Our Pagaman1, has discovered that you can enable the display of video and the Video-Editing on the iPhone 3G and EDGE. So technically you can use some functions reserved exclusively all’iPhone 3GS also on our previous models.

Everything you tell in this article (which will be constantly updated) is in exclusive iSpazio. There is only one small problem, or we can no longer take pictures with the camera, which will remain closed. Right now I’m just hacking on some files to try to maintain the video functions without losing the photos.
The screenshot that you find below were made from my iPhone EDGE:

In short we can offer you a guide, always exclusive iSpazio to try the new features on your iPhone. In the meantime I continue to play with the plist, trying to derive something really useful for all before writing the guide. Stay Tuned!

Digital Film Tools has released Light 1.2, an iPhone application that can add realistic lighting and shadow to photos.

Gobos from the Gamproducts collection are arranged into the following categories: Breakups, Foliage, Lights, Sky and Windows.

Features:
- Control light brightness, blurring, and displacement for light wrapping effects
- Adjust light position, rotation and size with on-screen controls
- Isolate light using the selection screen
- Position slider determines where to put the light
- Range slider selects the amount of light
- Lum (Luminance), Hue, or Sat (Saturation) buttons change the selection method
