Sleepers.net has announced Kryptes, an alternative package handler to Cydia for jailbroken iPhones.
Kryptes is a new, lightweight, package handler that was designed with the end user in mind. We are very excited to announce its release and hope the community appreciates all the hard work that we have put into this. We do understand that there are going to be several questions the Community might have for us, so we will try to answer most of them in this post.
Q: Are you trying to compete with Cydia and Installer?
A: No, we have tried to reach out to both of the developers for each one of these handlers several times. We have been continually shot down when we asked if we could become a default repository/source. IT was as if we did not exist, when we feel we have given much to the community.
Q: So why did you produce a Application, when there are already 2 prominent applications that exist that are similiar to Kryptes?
A: We have over 600 developers in our repository, we felt to give them the most exposure in the Community we were left with no choice, but to build our own Package Handler. If we would have been accepted as a default repository with the other Package Handlers the build of Kryptes would not have happened.
You can install Kryptes by adding the Sleepers.net repo to Cydia and install the “A Alternative to Cydia and Installer” package. We are not aware of how safe or stable this application is.
RiP Dev has released version 1.2 of their Icy Installer application for iPhone and iPod touch.
What’s new?
* Ability to hide categories you don’t need.
* Category names are now localizable.
* Icy will now auto-refresh sources if it is on Wi-Fi and didn’t refresh in past hour.
* Various GUI fixes in regard to Installed/Updates section.
* Fixed a script issue causing some package not to be installed.
* Add email maintainer button for the console error log sheet to quickly report on errors.
* Fixed sources refresh so stalled repositories won’t affect others.
* Added Polish localization.
* Added Chinese localizations.
* Other fixes.
You can install the Icy Installer from Cydia by adding the http://apt.ripdev.com repository.
Navizion just released a version of their App for the iPhone via the AppStore. It has most of the features of the previous versions that was available to jailbroken phones via Installer such as:
- display your position on a map even in places where you wouldn’t get your location otherwise
- the Buddy Finder to display all your friends on a map
- the Navizon alerts (where you can be notified by email when your parents get closer to home or when they leave work for example)
- the trail logging to keep track of all the places you go
But one of the cool new things is that if you own an iPhone 3G, you are now able to earn rewards just by having Navizon running on your iPhone. Every cell tower that you log, every WiFi access point that you pass by will mean points in your account that you can later turn into cash. Not a bad thing in these difficult economic times..
Navizoin released a Lite and a full version. The Lite version doesn’t have trail logging, rewards and has a limited number of alerts monthly. But you can use the first 10,000 points earned to upgrade to the full version and enjoy all of the features of the full version.
Rip Dev have released Kate for iPhone and iPod Touch via Installer. Two things to note are that the Equalizer will no longer be a feature and this version has no uninstall yet, so make sure to backup your iPhone/Touch before just to be safe.
If you have purchased Kate in the past the license is still working on the new firmware. If you have upgraded from a iPhone/Touch to a iPhone 3G (or swapped phones) you can contact Rip Dev to have then update their system.
What is Kate?
Kate is an unique package of little tools for your iPhone that can be installed separately from each other. Each module provides its own set of features aimed to make your use of iPhone more productive and fun. Customization, business tools, quick contacts search, system font replacement and many more — constantly growing as we add new tools and functionality.
What’s new with version 2.0
All Components:
First release for firmware 2.0. Can be installed from the repository http://i.ripdev.com/ using Installer 4.
All included components reworked to work under 2.0.x with the same functionality. Rip Dev will expand on the feature set soon.
Existing subscriptions will work; you can also request a trial or check your subscription by visiting Settings > RiP Dev > RiP Dev Products preference pane.
EQ:
This component will not be supported under firmware 2.0 due to significant changes in the audio subsystem.
Uninstall:
This component is not yet supported (will be included in the next version).
Installer 4.0b5 has been released via an update on your iPhone (please check Installer and you may need to refresh the sources a few times to see it). There is also a new updated community sources package that has some added sources for Installer.
What’s new?
Many visual enhancements and fixes in regards to source and packages display.
Fixed an issue with failing installs with dependencies under some circumstances.
Fixed a bug causing package information to be displayed incorrectly (size 0 bytes) on the first access, or when the custom information HTML page (such as packages from Big Boss’ repository) was not displayed.
When updating a package, and one of its dependencies also has an update available, the dependency will be updated as well.
The package icons will only be downloaded when on the Wi-Fi to help you save on bandwidth.
The repositories are being refreshed upon Installer.app launch so you always stay on the bleeding edge with the updates. This is exeperimental behavior and we’re not yet sure it will make it to the final release.
Fixed a script command Confirm that was returning invalid button index for the “OK” button.
Lots and lots of both cosmetic and internal application core fixes that improve the overall performance, presentation and stability of the application.
I have not been giving Installer an easy time recently. Let’s face it, it was buggy, it didn’t have any useful sources and it didn’t have any new apps listed. I personally think it was maybe released a little too early, or too late. But, today I installed my first apps with Installer.
Thankfully a new update to Community Sources was released today and it included a few more sources and thankfully fixed all the errors that was practically making Installer useless before. There has still not been any official post or update form Rip Dev’s Blog.
The apps listed seem to be pretty much the same as those on Cydia except for Kate and some a couple others, hopefully now that the bugs are being fixed we’ll start to see allot more new apps, games and themes and some old favaorites soon. I am missing MobileFinder
It’s been almost 12 hours with Installer 4.04b and I have not installed a single app or game with it. I installed the community sources and it immediately threw up a message saying “Error File does not exist”. Remove the source and the error is gone. It turns out that the Community sources package is missing some files. Its also missing other repo sources besides the _BigBoss_ Repo that is missing all the icon files causing the error. The repo owners are aware and said that it will be resolved soon. If not, they will put out a package called “bigboss installer icons” that will resolve it.
