Navizon now on the iPhone AppStore

Navizion just released a version of their App for the iPhone via the AppStore. It has most of the features of the previous versions that was available to jailbroken phones via Installer such as:

- display your position on a map even in places where you wouldn’t get your location otherwise
- the Buddy Finder to display all your friends on a map
- the Navizon alerts (where you can be notified by email when your parents get closer to home or when they leave work for example)
- the trail logging to keep track of all the places you go

But one of the cool new things is that if you own an iPhone 3G, you are now able to earn rewards just by having Navizon running on your iPhone. Every cell tower that you log, every WiFi access point that you pass by will mean points in your account that you can later turn into cash. Not a bad thing in these difficult economic times..

Navizoin released a Lite and a full version. The Lite version doesn’t have trail logging, rewards and has a limited number of alerts monthly. But you can use the first 10,000 points earned to upgrade to the full version and enjoy all of the features of the full version.

G-Map for iPhone - Turn by Turn GPS may be coming to the iPhone - If Apple Approves

Traveling somewhere you’ve never been? Or need directions right away? Hopefully one day soon you’ll be able to run G-Map on your iPhone. G-Map can show you the way wherever you go, even with no Wi-Fi connection or in dead zones up in the mountains, out on the ocean, or even in an airplane.

G-Map is a stand-alone electronic map. So once it’s downloaded, you can freely search your location and get directions without an internet connection, anytime, anywhere, even when you’re on the move.

G-Map’s massive databaase will help you find any desired location, and can also provide detailed information of the searched location such as address and phone number. It’s also possible to enter your own personal notes or make changes to the information of the location searched, so you can even use your G-Map as a travel notebook. Read more…

iLocalis - Never Lose Your iPhone 3G Again!

Just released via the MMi Cydia source iLocalis the ultimate in iPhone tracking, remote control, and more.

Click the image to open in full size.

What’s that image above? That is from my account on the iLocalis website and it is where my iPhone was located 22 mins ago. With iLocalis you can set how often you want your iPhone 3G to send its current location to the iLocalis server and your iPhone will be tracked.

Click the image to open in full size.

What can this be used for?

  • Never lose you iPhone. If it is missing just log onto the iLocalis site and you’ll know where it was located last. These things are expensive and losing them sucks. Problem solved.
  • Retrieve a stolen iPhone. If your iPhone is stolen you can log into the site and check out where it’s at. Extra features built into iLocalis allow you to send text messages or make calls on your iPhone when you don’t even have it with you. If you iPhone is stolen log in and send yourself a text message. If the thief changed the sim card you’ll have their phone number!
  • Allow your family and friends to know where you are. iLocalis will send a message to your friends when you are near by. You can also set it up to allow your friends to locate you. If your friend also has iLocalis you can send messages to each other for free. No txt messaging charges.

Click the image to open in full size.

  • Need family or someone else to know where you are? You can share a map of your location data with whomever you choose with a temporary URL that will expire when you set it to expire.
  • iLocalis can also be used for a business that needs location services for their employees. Employees carrying iPhones with iLocalis can be tracked via the web site easily.

This app really works! Although there are a few bugs with cookies expiring and having to log back into the app occasionally on the iPhone it appears to send your location the the iLocalis web servers the whole time. I turned it on and went for a little drive and the app did a great job tracking where I went. I also tested the send text message feature. I sent a text message via my phone from the iLocalis website and it worked just like it is supposed to.

Click the image to open in full size.

Need your iPhone’s location to be tracked? Want to increase your chances of recovery if your iPhone is stolen? iLocalis is for you so grab it from Cydia already! Once installed on the iPhone just hop on over to the iLocalis site and you can see what’s going on! Unfortunately at some point (10 days) the free trial will end and you’ll have to donate to keep the features going. The good news is that at a minimum donation price of $2.50 for an entire year subscription it’s really not unreasonable at all.

AT&T Surveying iPhone Owners On What They Want

AT&T has recently begun surveying some of its longer-term iPhone buyers asking what features they would most like to see added to the Apple handset.

The survey chiefly touches on post-purchase satisfaction with both Apple and AT&T and is described by AppleInsider readers as a follow-up to a similar survey from a few months ago, or shortly after the iPhone 3G launch.

It’s also said to be gauging reactions to iPhone firmware 2.1 and whether or not the update improved the phone’s features.

A single page of the survey, however, is committed just to judging which features customers would most likely to see added to the iPhone in the future. The questionnaire asks owners to pick the top five hardware or software add-ons they’d like to see and include many of the most prominent requests made in the community, including cutting and pasting text, built-in instant messaging, Flash/Java support and MMS messaging.

A handful of the items have already been partly or completely addressed. Users can already search contacts, for example, while it’s also possible to download ringtones from iTunes on a computer but not the iPhone itself.

Readers shouldn’t necessarily interpret this as a sign of Apple’s future direction with its multi-touch device; companies regularly poll their customers to determine the level of demand for particular features.

AT&T survey on iPhone 3G
Apple has previously said, however, that it’s continually looking to add new features to the iPhone’s software and that it was a question of priority and that copy-and-paste, directional GPS, and other features have been put on the backburner in the past to address other components first or due to complications.

iGPS360 Module for iPhone, iPod

The iGPS360 module is a state-of-the-art GPS module that brings GPS capability to the iPhone and iPod Touch.

- The module is designed as a direct plug-in for your iPhone (both first generation and 3G) and iPod Touch (the module will not work on other iPod platforms or Apple devices). We also expect the module to work on the second generation iPod Touch once it has been jailbroken.

- The module has on-board battery back-up which will store the last acquired GPS satellite information on-board, enabling a fast GPS-lock re-acquisition time after the module has temporarily been switched off. For optimum on-board battery life and performance, it is advised that before first use of the module, you charge your iPhone/iPod Touch through the GPS module with the included USB cable for at least 16 hours. This will ensure that the battery inside of the GPS module is fully charged before first use. Overnight charging of your iPhone/iPod Touch through the GPS module should be done at least once a week in order to maintain last satellite data and user settings.

- The module is A-GPS enabled, meaning that satellite ephemeris/almanac data can optionally be uploaded to the module before you leave home. This A-GPS data enables the module to achieve an even faster cold-start GPS-lock
- The module features a low current
- The module ships with a 6ft micro-USB cable (USB-A to micro USB-B) which will allow you to charge and sync your iPhone/iPod Touch while the GPS module is plugged in (either at home or on the road).

- A smart keychain is currently in development that will extend the functionality of the iGPS360 module in such a way that the module can also be used on any laptop or desktop computer that has a USB port. The keychain will also allow for easy and safe storage of the iGPS360 module on your keychain when not in use. The keychain will be sold separately.

The module costs $75.00 and can be pre-ordered from Orange Gadgets at this link

Turn by Turn GPS and Voice Navigation on the iPhone 3G

Some have argued that the iPhone’s GPS antenna is too small or weak, but GPS manufacturers like TomTom and TeleNav both assured the public that they have working GPS turn by turn navigation solutions working on the iPhone.

If they have submitted them for review or not is unknown. Apple has stated that they will allow turn by turn navigation via third party apps, but even though we have been assured that they work, none are available in the AppStore yet.

Most turn by turn Nav systems these days use voice commands and give audio instructions. The iPhone has got an improved - but still weak - speaker phone, and lacks A2DP bluetooth, which may cripple the effectiveness of these voice guided GPS apps on the iPhone. The main problem is likely the restrictive SDK and Apple’s tight grip on which apps make it to the AppStore. Apple may have their own GPS turn by turn nav app coming out or may be waiting for the right software to be submitted and they’ll choose to partner with that developer.

There have been some developers that have created small GPS dongles for the iPhone that can offer turn by turn GPS tracking using xGPS, but they also don’t offer turn by turn navigation.

But since the introduction of the iPhone 3G and built in GPS, these dongles will only be useful to the millions of iPhone and iPod touch owners not to the millions of iPhone 3G owners. There are a few GPS enabled apps available from the AppStore that offer various levels of functionality. Here are a few:

- Garafa’s GPSKit [$9.99, App Store] for iPhone provides you with more advanced GPS functionality and tracking for your iPhone (video)
- GPS Tracker [Free] - real-time tracking service
- Speed [Free] - real time speedometer
- PathTracker [$0.99] - real time stats, save your path, also for runners/bikers
- Speedster GPS [$0.99] - speed and altitude in real time
- gpsCompass [$1.99] - real time stats
- Distance Meter [$2.99] - distance tracker
- iTrail [$2.99] - distance and path tracker for runners/bikers
- RunKeeper [$9.99] - track running/biking paths and stats

But none of these can provide the same level of service or finctionality as for example the new Samsung Instinct. While the Instinct is no iPhone Killer, it certainly has the advantage when it comes to looking for pizza.
