iTunes 8 - Grid View, Genius Bar, Trippy Visuals and PWNAGE

Update Below iTunes 8 is now available and I wasted no dive diving in to see what the big deal was about. Firstly the 36MB install went smoothly and from the get go I noticed some new graphics and new colors. After it imported my music, podcasts etc first thing I did was try out the new Genius Bar. It scanned my music library and sent it off to big brother.

Once that was complete any song you select the genius bar on the right suggests albums, songs and playlists. Cool. The next thing I checked out was the new visualizations and all I can say is WOW. Talk about Acid Trip. Who ever created this, I want whatever he is on, this is amazing. (check the video I made, but please turn down your speakers, I don’t know what happened to the audio in Cycorder )

The last and not least, I tried PWNing an iPhone with iTunes 8 - Not working. Error 1600. (updated below). PWNING with iTunes 8 only works from Restore Mode.

Let’s Rock - New iTunes 8 iPod Nano, Classic and Touch, New iPhone 2.1 firmware.

The Big Apple event took off today at promptly 10:00 AM Pacific with a Apple CEO Steve Jobs taking the wheel. He started off by saying -

“The topic this morning is music. Let’s start with iTunes. It’s the ubiquitous store and music player. It now offers 8.5 million songs. It’s amazing. Over 125,000 podcasts, over 30,000 TV shows, 2600 movies… and we now offer over 3,000 apps for iPhone and touch.”

iTunes 8 has been updated and NBC content is now available, along with some new features. HD TV shows, new browsing views and a Genius Bar. The new Genius Bar creates playlists tailored to your tastes and library. You can now automatically create playlists with just one click.

Next on the agenda was iPods. Apple is has two model iPod Classic, thin and thick, they are discontinuing the thick one. The iPod Classic is now 120GB at $249 USD.

Next is the new iPod Nano 16GB, $149 for 8GB, $199 for 16GB., it’s the thinnest iPod Nano yet and looks exactly like the leaked shots we saw. The screen is the same size as the current Nano, but rotated 90*. The New iPod Nano also has the accelerometer from the iPhone and iPod Touch in there now too so you can shake it to shuffle. Also expect some great new games. There is also a new headphones (for $79 or a iPhone Headphone will do ;)) with integrated mic that will allow voice recording - SWEET!.

The iPod Nano will also be available in seven nine new nano-chromatic colors, Black, Purple, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, Red, Pink and Silver. Stats are 24 hours battery life for music, 4 hours for video. I sense some AppStore Action for the Nano and of course the Genius bar is there for playlist.

Steve Jobs also added:

“We want to be environmentally sensitive. We’re constantly worrying about it. But the biggest thing is toxins — we have an internal checklist, but the new iPods look great from this point of view. They’re highly recyclable… we’re really trying our best. We think these new nanos are the cleanest we’ve ever built.”

Next up was the iPod Touch. Same display, but even thinner with contoured stainless steel design. The new

Touch has a integrated volume controls into the side, built-in speaker (yay) and Nike+ and of course he New Genius bar and AppStore. Check out the guided tour of the new iPod Touch for more info

Speaking of AppStore, Phil Schiller also presented today and started off by demoing Spore Origins (one of my new favorite games for iPhone), Real Soccer 2009 and Need For Speed: Undercover. The new iPod Touch is available in three models, 8GB $229, 16GB for $299, and a 32GB for $399.

Steve Jobs also announced that iPhone Firmware 2.1 will be available for all iPhone and iPhone 3G owners from Friday 12 September. It will have some bug fixes, a signal boost and better battery. - Besides some Jack Johnson, that was about it. What did you expect? Me, I expected allot more..

iTunes 8 Leaked on Apple Website - Quickly Pulled - Not Leaked

It seems that last last night someone over in Apple Web Department accidentally posted a download button and link for the new iTunes 8 on the Apple website. Who ever that unlucky person is was quickly struck with Steve Jobs’ rod of correction and as quickly as it was posted, it was removed. Here is a screen shot taken by the lucky/unlucky person that spotted it.

Why is he unlucky you ask? Simply because releasing it may get you in some pretty hot water. iTunes 8 has not been legally authorized for distribution and distributing it could potentially get you sued by Apple. Even though Apple may loose the court case, they have the money to take you to court and potentially bankrupt you in the process even if you win.

So he and probably a few others are enjoying the new iTunes 8, if they dare - What would you do?

Rumors, What's New ,

iPhone Firmware 2.1 and iTunes 8 on Tuesday

Apple is having a big event on Tuesday September 9th that is not one to be missed. The stars of the show are a new line of iPods and iPod Touch’s in various shapes, sizes and capacities. The other stars of the event will be the new iTunes 8 and hopefully iPhone/Touch firmware 2.1

Rumors are going wild, but they all seem to be all pointing at some great new features for iTunes 8 such as the new Genius feature (suggesting playlists/artists based on what you are listening to), Genius Sidebar, Grid view (like AppleTv), and trippy visuals caught from Steve Job’s flash backs from the 60’s and 70’s.

What I would like to know is if iTunes 8 will work with PWNAGE? - Because another rumored update is going to be iPhone/iTouch Firmware 2.1, and I am guessing that you must have iTunes 8 to upgrade to 2.1.

Apple has managed to do a great job this time at not leaking the new features of 2.1 firmware. We can make a good guess that it will include push/pull technology for Apps to run in the background. But what else?

I am thinking we should look back at some of the patents that were submitted by Apple before firmware 2.0 and the iPhone 3G were revealed. Below is a list of the new features that I think that Apple will introduce with firmware 2.1 for the iPhone and iPod Touch

  1. iTunes Remote Streaming
  2. Push for background Apps
  3. GPS Native App (turn by turn)
  4. Video and improved camera App
  5. Copy & Paste
  6. Native Chat (iChat)

iChat, first thing you think of is obviously video chat, well there is no camera on the front of the iPhone 3G (nor 2G) but Apple did submit this earlier this year when it patented the iPhone 3G and firmware 2.0.

“…In some embodiments, an optical sensor is located on the front of the device so that the user’s image may be obtained for videoconferencing while the user views the other video conference participants on the touch screen display…

But see that the optical sensors in the iPhone 3G don’t seem to have any image capture capabilities I think we can rule video conferencing out, for now.

The event os carded for Tuesday 9th September, I be sure to post where you can get either live audio, video or blogcast.

How to install a weather widget on your iPhone Springboard

Winterboard from Jay Freeman has opened up a wold of possibilities with it’s ability to display HTML, Java and CSS on the springboard. Today I am going to take a closer look at one of these addition, The WinterBoard Weather Widget.

The WinterBoard Weather Widget was developed by Zetetic Apparatchik over on MacThemes and is mostly coded in XHTML, CSS and JS by Zetetic except for the AccuWeather fetcher ‘borrowed’ from Leopard*.

Data sources are currently either AccuWeather (Apple’s feed*) or Yahoo!Weather (beta-quality). Zetetic had help from Jimmy who located the Klear and Tango icon sets and designed the ’split’ display style.

If you know a little CSS and HTML editing this widget is a snap and you really wouldn’t need my help. But for those of you looking at this wonder what how the hell to make this work for you - this tutorial is for you.

Latest WeatherWidget Download: Click Here

Basic Installation
Having unzipped WeatherWidget.theme.zip you’ll need to edit the file called ConfigureMe.js located at: WeatherWidget.theme/Private/configureMe.js

The Line you’ll need to change is:

Code:

var locale = "…"

reads correctly for your location (e.g. ‘Piarco’, ‘Bridgetown’, ‘Defiance, Ohio’, ‘Moscow, Russia, ‘London, UK’). There are five different Styles to the Weather Widget.

  • originalBubble (which places a chiclet like bubble with the weather info inside)
  • split (where you get the local and temp on the left and the current weather icon on the right)
  • myopia (this is my favorite and is the current weather icon with the temp and locale next to it)
  • iconOnly (displays the current weather as an icon only)
  • oneLine (displays all info in one line)

Selecting which one you want to use is easy, in the same ‘ConfigureMe.js’ file look at line 21:

var stylesheetWall='myopia'

Change ‘myopia’ in this example to any of the other styles mentioned, just make sure to type them in correctly to any of the styles listed above.. You can also edit the actual Stylesheet for each widget layout by editing the .css files located in the ‘StyleSheets’ folder. Editing the .css will allow you to change font colors, icon size, placement of the widgets etc. Looking at the ConfugureMe file and .css files there is also allot you can add to this widget including adding it to your lockscreen, so fiddle around and enjoy customizing it.

Once you have finished editing the WeatherWidget.theme to display your country and it fits where you would want it, then just copy the entire WeatherWidget.theme folder into:

var/Library/Themes

on your iPhone or iPod Touch and then open up WinterBoard and you should see the new Weather Widget listed, simply turn it on and enjoy.

I have added the Trinidad & Tobago Weather Widget to the Bez Theme (1.1.2) that you can download and install here, no editing required, but you can customize it if you wish. (Please read the ReadMe.txt)

Troubleshooting
Not Found usually indicates you should try a variation on your location (like in Trinidad the capital Port of Spain doesnt work, but our airport, Piarco does). Apple/Accuweather’s backend is very good but can be stumped. (Yahoo!’s is unforgiving.) No Response usually indicates that you need to check your iPhone/iTouch is connected to the Internet. The AccuWeather servers could also be down.
You can try checking with Leopard’s Weather widget that your locale works.

Thanks to Zetetic Apparatchik for this great Widget, if you have any probelms or wish to discuss, please post in the forum.

My Latest iPhone Theme - Bez

Bez By Aaron Besson of MyTriniPhone.com

This is my personal theme called Bez that I designed by using the original Apple iPhone Icons and then adding some extra punch and lighting effects to them. This is version Bez-1.0b. It has the full suite of standard app icons for 2.0+ (including Cydia and Installer). I will be adding to the icons and will also be releasing some different wallpapers as well as sliders and app images etc. I hope you like it and if you have any comments or requests please let me know.

Download Link Bez Theme for iPhone (3G) and Touch (Version 1.1.1 with Weather Widget)

sorry for the download link going down, I am not sure what happened. I am contacting _BigBoss_ and ModMyiFone and asking them to host it. It should be available via Cydia and Installer soon.

Updates coming soon:

  • Different Colored Wallpapers
  • Weather Widget
  • More Icons for your favorite apps

Loads more to come, thanks for all the support.

iPhone Camera Mod Tested - It Works

This photo was taken with an iPhone that I just repaired. I put in a camera module that I modified according to this post. I am very impressed that with that one clumsy adjustment I made, how good the camera was able to focus. I’ll make a few more adjustments and post a couple more shots.

I also recorded the entire process of taking apart the iPhone, and also swapping around commboards and batteries with another phone I have, then swapping them back and then putting this one with the modified camera back together. The video is 500MB and over 1/2 hour long so I need to edit it and upload it to YouTube.

I think I need to take this one apart again to replace the camera with his original one as this one is no use really to anyone other than a few who want to take close ups. See photos below stay tuned for more.

As you can see the iPhone’s Camera is focused on my finger, not the Coke or Laptop in the background. The shot of my 2G iPhone shows jsut about the limit where it starts to loose focus, about 4-6 inches LOL. (Update, successfully swapped out the Camera back to the unaltered stock one. It is now happily back to taking blury close ups and acceptable wide angle shots)
