iPhone OS 3.0.1 Released; redsn0w compatibility

Apple on Thursday released iPhone OS 3.0.1 which contains a patch to fix a discovered exploit in the SMS system whereby a hacker had to simply send a single character SMS in order to gain control of the iPhone.

This is the only change between this & 3.0.

As far as jailbreaking is concerned redsn0w (confirmed by the Dev Team) does work with 3.0.1. Only change to make note of is to select the 3.0 firmware when doing the jailbreak not the 3.0.1 firmware.
“Restore to 3.0.1, run redsn0w, select the 3.0 file… Bang zoom.”

iPod3,1 Found In iPhone OS 3.0

References to a new model of the iPod touch have been found in OS 3.0 by iPodTouchFans member, kewlgreen.

I was just looking around in SSH on my iPod Touch 2G Firmware 3.0 and i found the BlueTool init script for the iPod touch 3,1:

Found in: “/etc/bluetool/”

BCM4325D0_004.001.007.0153.0155_N72_032609.hcd
BCM4329B1_002.002.023.0015.0016_Olympic_021809_37. 4MHz.hcd
iPhone1,1.boot.script
iPhone1,1.deepsleep.script
iPhone1,1.init.script
iPod2,1.boot.script
iPod2,1.deepsleep.script
iPod2,1.init.script
iPod3,1.boot.script
iPod3,1.deepsleep.script
iPod3,1.init.script
pcm-example.script

These references point to the use of the Broadcom BCM4329 chip…

The Broadcom BCM4329 integrates a complete IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n system (MAC/baseband/radio) with Bluetooth® 2.1 + EDR (Enhanced Data Rate), and FM radio receiver and transmitter. By combining several proven wireless technologies onto a single silicon die, the BCM4329 enables mobile devices to support today’s toughest media applications — without impacting device size or battery life.

iPhone SDK confirms a new model iPhone - but few apparent cosmetic changes

This image was discovered by a member of the MacTalk forums, the icon set buried well within the device framework for iPhone SDK beta 5 and shows an images for iPhone 2,1 — the internal working codename for the next version of Apple’s iPhone. iPhone firmware Beta 5 doesn’t make any references to iPod 2,2, the expected minor refresh to the iPod touch.

New iPhone 3.0 voice control features nicknamed “Jibbler” discovered

A new report is backing rumors of Voice Dialing support inside betas of Apple’s iPhone 3.0 Software but adds that capability may be just one of several features included in a new Voice Services framework that may also facilitate voice control of the new OS.

Adding to discoveries of “Voice Control” preferences within the International preferences of the upcoming release, contacts speaking to Ars have located a number of function calls to voice control features apparently nicknamed “Jibbler.”

While details are few and far between, the features appear to tie into the new version of the Springboard application that serves as the iPhone’s home screen and application launcher. In particular, references to VSSpeechSynthesizer, VSRecognitionSession, SBVoiceControlDisableHandlerActions, SBSensitiveJibblerEnabled, and SBVoiceControlSoundCompletion were uncovered.

While those methods appears to be private at this time, meaning they’re accessible to Apple but not third-party developers, it’s speculated that they could initially provide support for Voice Dialing on current and future iPhone handsets. In addition, they could also provide an alternative means of controlling the iPhone’s Springboard services.

“Jibbler may be controlled via the iPhone headset — button squeezes could be used to record short voice segments from the user, which Jibbler will then interpret,” the report notes. “Voice synthesis can then be used to give the user a response, similar to the latest generation iPod shuffle, which can ‘read’ playlists and track names — the difference being that the iPhone hardware itself could handle real-time voice synthesis.”

Apple has said it plans to release iPhone Software 3.0 sometime this summer as a free upgrade for all current iPhone owners. A distribution for iPod touch users will cost $10.

Proofof Video Capture capabilities in iPhone firmware 3.0

Since the release of Apple’s iPhone 3.0 beta firmware, users have been scouring the configuration files looking for evidence of future iPhone capabilities. The possibility of video recording has seemed increasingly certain with files for video uploading and editing having been discovered.

A new finding, however, should put to rest any doubts about whether or not Apple is planning to include video recording in future iPhones. This screenshot, which was discovered in the latest iPhone 3.0 beta, shows the interface Apple will provide for video recording:

The interface shows the normal iPhone camera interface but with a switch on the bottom right which toggles between still camera photography and video recording. The video recording is not presently functional in iPhone 3.0 beta, and the interface is not accessible by default. Only when configuration files were modified telling the firmware that a Video Camera was present will this interface appear.

Other interesting capabilities found in the configuration files include “auto-focus camera”, “magnetometer” (digital compass), and “Voice Control”.

Apple is expected to release the final version of iPhone 3.0 this summer, and many believe that Apple will also introduce an updated iPhone around that time as well.

Jailbreaking 3.0 Beta 2 iPhone OS with the Unofficial QuickPWN 3.0 Beta 2

iphone dev team's version of Steve Jobs
Image by ♥ China ♥ guccio via Flickr

As reported before, the unofficial QuickPWN 3.0 Beta 2 is out! This version is not supported by the iPhone Dev Team so your probably shit outta luck with getting help from them.

There are lots of iPhone owners/users out there who want to update their iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPhone 3G, but also want to keep their jailbreak. Please note that 3G users will loose Yellowsn0w and a possible unlock in the future if they use this version of QuickPwn 3.0 Beta2. This is because you must update in iTunes to the 3.0 Beta 2, and for the iPhone 3G only this includes a unlockable baseband (modem firmware) update.

A Russian hacker called Vortex has released the unofficial jailbreak at iPhoneApps.ru. You can jailbreak the iPhone (2G) 3.0 Beta 2 - and it will remain unlocked, the iPhone 3G once updated to 3.0 beta 2 will be locked again and QuickPwn 3.0 Beta 2 will only jailbreak and install Cydia, and  the iPod Touch 1st Gen beta 3.0 can be jailbreaked also. There is no Redsn0w for the iPod Touch 2G.

One thing though, it install’s RiPDev’s Icy program, I am very weary of RipDev’s stuff just because of the bad experices I have had with other products of theirs that caused me countless restores and some SSH and terminal file shuffling to get by iPhone back into a working condition.

The other catch is once you’ve jailbroken your device, you’ll only have Icy. Cydia is not working, neither SSH or Terminal and MobileSubstrate that rely on the Cydia BSD environment.

Please note this is for Windows Only

Please remember that this is beta, and the firmwares are beta, and that they will be buggy straight outta the box from Apple, far less after being jailbreaked. If you have any problems, best thing to do is restore to 2.2 (NOT 2.2.1 for 3g’s) and use QuickPwn.

Apple Releases 2nd 3.0 BETA To Developers

Apple on Tuesday afternoon provided its vast developer community with a second beta release of iPhone Software 3.0, which arrived alongside a promise by the company to gradually open its live Push Notification service and In-App Purchasing to beta testers in the near term.

The Cupertino-based iPhone maker reportedly told developers downloading the build, labeled iPhone OS beta 2 build 7A259, that they could begin developing applications that will rely on the company’s new Push Notification service immediately.

Similarly, developers were also provided with more detailed information on how to build in-app purchasing functionality into their existing or future applications. Much of this technical information will reportedly appear in a App Store Kit reference guide.

Apple said it plans to open its live testing services that support these new services during the ongoing iPhone 3.0 beta test program, but warned that access would be limited to a chosen few developers at first, and gradually expanding to more developers as time progresses.

In an article published last Wednesday, AppleInsider reported that Apple engineers were “racing to deliver a new build of iPhone Software 3.0 to iPhone and iPod touch developers” that would support “live support for Push Notifications through Apple’s servers.”

Meanwhile, developers familiar with the new beta say Apple appears to have knocked out quite a few bugs that were reported by testers of the original beta released on March 17th. (A comprehensive walk-through of changes in this build is available here.)

Another series of changes were reportedly documented alongside the release of a new version of the iPhone SDK also released Tuesday. Some specific components that received attention were GameKit, Bluetooth, MapKit, Fonts, the messaging user interface, and text fields.

Apple has also reportedly confirmed that MMS messaging and device tethering won’t be supported at all during the iPhone 3.0 beta test.

Analyst: 32GB iPhone Could Debut In June

Apple is expected to begin production on a high-end iPhone with 32GB of flash memory and a low-end 3G version this spring, according to a research report released Tuesday by Lazard Capital Markets analyst.

Production is anticipated to begin in April and ramp up in May, and the new phones could be announced in June, Daniel Amir, a Lazard Capital Markets analyst, said in his report.

He noted, however, that the low-end version may only be available in the fast-growing, emerging markets of Brazil, Russia, India, and China, while the high-end version is expected to make its way to North America and Europe.

The low-end version is expected to run on a 3G network, rather than on Wi-Fi, while the high-end version is anticipated to double its storage capacity from 16GB to 32GB of NAND flash memory and feature improvements to its camera, Amir noted in his report, citing checks with Apple’s iPhone channel partners.

Meanwhile, Amir predicts, iPhone unit shipments for the first and second quarters could be higher than Wall Street’s current forecast.

He expects iPhone shipments to come in around 3.8 million to 4 million in the first quarter, while Wall Street is anticipating 3 million to 3.5 million units.

In the second quarter, iPhone shipments could reach 7 million to 8 million units, a threefold to fourfold increase over last year’s second quarter performance, he asserts. Apple’s new iPhones are expected to account for about 3 million of these figures, Amir said. Wall Street, meanwhile, is expecting Apple to ship 6.5 million to 7 million iPhones in the second quarter.

Apple was not immediately available for comment.

Reports of an Apple flash-memory buying binge surfaced in February, with one analyst from Think Equity Partners noting that Apple had virtually cleaned out one large supplier and was hitting up two others for more flash memory.

Amir told CNET News that the February rise stemmed from increased production for the iPhones that shipped in March. In order to meet its needs for a 32GB iPhone, Apple will hit up its suppliers up toward the end of next month, he said.

Amir noted in his research report:

About 20 percent of all NAND capacity goes to Apple, and its impact on the NAND market should not be underestimated…

NAND prices should move up further off the Apple orders. We believe that with the new iPhone design which could include 32GB NAND, Apple is setting the stage for another potentially big flash order starting in April. With the potential for 3 million units to be shipped in 2Q, we believe the magnitude of such an order could enable prices of NAND components to move up an additional 20 percent in the (first half) of 2Q.
