Got my Apps on my iPod Touch 2.0

After a looooong night last night I finally got my iPod Touch updated to iPod Touch firmware 2.0 5A345, and everything seems o be working fine - jiggly icons and all. I spent most of my time so far installing apps and games and fumbling around with the new features. I have not had any major problems or complaints.

I must say that browsing the AppStore on the device itself is easy and fun, and installing apps is a breeze. The only thing I don’t like is that it takes you back to the springboard after to choose to install, so you have to relaunch the AppStore after being sent to the spring board.

As you can see I have only installed Free apps as I have not gotten my iTunes Gift Cards to try purchasing some apps/games (i.e. Super Monkey Ball) - I’ll keep you all in touch as to what’s going on today, so far i hear that AT&T servers have crashed and iPhone 3G Activation is on hold or taking for ever!

You can download the iPod Touch Firmware 2.0 build 5A347 (newer than my install) from here: http://content.info.apple.com/ProtectedAsset/iPod/osx/bundles/061-4957.20080711.Fr43E/iPod1%2C1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw

Firmware 2.0 and Keynote Summary

Apple has officially announced that on July 11th they will officially start selling the 3G iPhone in 22 countries around the world. Well what does that mean for people like us who have the current (soon to be or already old model) iPhone?

Current iPhone owners will get a free upgrade to Firmware 2.0. It is the same firmware found in the 3G iPhone. So all of the new features shown in the Keynote by Steve Jobs and others will be right there on your old iPhone. If you would like to have a closer look at all the features of firmware 2.0 check out Apple’s website, or have a look at the list below from TUAW.

Apple Store

2.0 Features for Current iPhone Owners (2G)

  • AppStore
  • Full Exchange support
  • MobileMe
  • Mass e-mail move, delete and save images
  • Contacts search
  • Additional language support
  • Full iWork and Microsoft Office viewer support
  • Scientific Calculator
  • Possibly/Probably Unlocked!!

This update is free for all iPhone owners and will be a $9.99 upgrade for iPod touch owners (boooo). But the fact that developers know the old model iPhone inside out means that it will probably be unlocked very soon and we will have 2.0 firmware with the AppStore on any Carrier (how that will work with the new iTunes and AppStore is yet to be seen as each app is signed by Apple to run on the iPhone)

If you didn’t have a chance to check out yesterday’s Keynote Address, or you don’t have about two hours to watch the complete thing, check out the video below from MahaloDaily.com and you’ll get a better idea of whats going on.

Besides 3G (and GPS) there may not be much reason to upgrade, unless the battery life and other hardware upgrades really make it a superior iPhone even when used on Quad Band GSM. I guess until I get my 3G iPhone (if it can be jailbreaked and unlocked is another story) and install 2.0 on my old iPhone I will not know how I really feel about the two devices side by side.

Play embedded YouTube Videos in Safari with upcoming iPhone 2.0 Firmware

BoyGeniusReport.com posted this video and basically confirmed what had been buzzing in the old rumor mill recently that YouTube videos embedded into web pages will be supported by Safari and the YouTube player on the iPhone. While this may only seem natural to you and me, it has taken Apple, and YouTube, I must add some time to catch up with this. This is only because every video on YouTube has to be converted for the iPhone into H.264 format, yup every single one.. Read more…

iPhone SDK build 9M2165 Beta 4 Released - 3D Gaming Support

Apple has released iPhone SDK build 9M2165 Beta 4 to developers today. For now we don’t know what if any new features are included in this beta.

Looks like this new Beta 4 comes with OpenGL ES support for some hardcore 3D gaming. We don’t know if PWNED will work (yet), but I am sure the Dev’s are already hard at work getting Beta 4 PWNED. Read more…
