One of the things that I am sure that everyone has been missing is the ability to customize and personalize their iPhone/Touch. Apple would love if your iPhone was unrecognizable in a pile of iPhones, but not any more. Customize is now compatible with Firmware 2.0! There are apparently still a couple of bugs (the About page and user Comments still not working), but all the good stuff is in there and working. You can manually download it here and install it via OpenSSH and FTP, or you can install it via Cydia (I am not seeing it listed on Cydia as the developer says)
SpicyChicken has updated its customization tool for the iPhone appropriately called Customize to version 2.0.0RC1. This update included a new addition to customize, Freeboard.
Freeboard is set to replace Summerboard and comes bundled with Customize 2.0.0RC1 and between the two they now have all the features of Summerboard built right in along with the great custom features and system tweaks that Customize allows.
I simply updated my Customize and already had Summerboard disabled in Customize. I have not uninstalled Summerboard yet, but I am thinking about it as I am not really ever using it anymore. One thing I did notice is that my vWallpaper no longer works, no matter what settings I try for wallpaper settings in both Customize and Summerboard, it was working before, but that is a small issue.
What has been included, and I know was a dearly missed feature, is Five Icon Dock is back, and it works marvelously. Here are a few screenshots. Customize 2.0.0RC1 can be found on Installer on your iPhone. I would suggest installing OpenSSH before your install or upgrade as some users have had issues with Customize clashing with other apps that edit the SpringBoard.plist file.
EDIT -Don NOT UPGRADE TO v2.0.0RC1Fix - it f’d up my iPhone
Well, they couldn’t leave good alone. Obviously becuase of probelms other users were having, Customize was updated to v2.0.0RC1Fix and it didn’t fix anything for me, infact, it caused me to get the Spinning Wheel of Death!
I am restoring my iPhone now because of it, bah… Reminds me of why I am hoping that Apps from the AppStore are more stable and tested.
While my girlfriend is up studying, I am fumbling around on digg and came across this great System theme called Chromium iPhone.
It’s a custom system theme that replaces nearly every part of the native Graphic User Interface on the iPhone.
It gives your iPhone interface an entirely Chrome look that’s nice and not too over done. I have got allot of system tweaks recently from messing with Customize again, but this adds some nice new interface tweaks. After installing make sure you reboot your iPhone, and once you have done that you’ll notice the changes once you open any application.
I still like the original iPhone interface, but it’s nice to spice things up every now and then, depending on the theme you are using this may be a nice addition. It would be nice to see offered for download on Customize.
This is available for install from the Planet-iPhones repository. Add the following source to your Installer Sources: http://planet-iphones.com/repository
Phycho Super Preferences created by Croiman is a great app that replaces your current iPhone Settings Application on your iPhone (i think it also creates a backup of your original Preferences app just in case). I must admit I was a bit skeptical about installing it and the idea of it replacing my original Preferences App, but so far so good. Besides being chocked full of features, it is also pretty stable and has not given me any errors or spinning wheels if death.
OK, I have been away for a while, having some much needed vacation in our beautiful sister island of Tobago, it really was crafted by the hand of god and has some of the most beautiful beaches and fortunately for me, some of the best waves for surfing on our little blue planet.
Upon my return there were a number of apps I wanted to play with and the first on my list was the new Customize.app that is in 2.0 Alpha, and you need to be in some sort of secret underground club to get a license/Invite to try it out.
Once you are lucky enough to get a license/Invite and the link to the deveopers website, you simply register your iPhone Serial number (and yes you must use the number of the phone you wish to use it on) and create a username and password then you’ll get the source to add to installer and and be able to install it. (I am not going to share the source openly here as it will flood the servers with people downloading the app without licenses and making it slow for those of us with licenses etc - but more on how to get a license below)..
The real meat of the app is the ability to create a profile on the developers website and create/upload your entire theme, and also browse other users and developers themes. This is by far the best way to ‘Customize’ your iPhone yet. Download packs include sounds wallpapers, icon sets, ring packs, battery graphics, status bar symbols, dial pad and even weather background images. This is really a fantastic program now.
You will need SummerBoard to enable the backgrounds/wallpapers to display, and choose Customize as the theme in SummerBoard as well, but once you have done that you can start tricking out your iPhone.
Within a few minutes I was able to upload my own theme iStroke to the Customize Theme Database and apply it to my iPhone, and others immediately started downloading and rating my theme too, sweet. Rating is another great feature that easily gives you an idea of the popularity, but thankfully there is the good old preview button to have a quick look.
Downloading more themes and sounds etc is easy and fun, and i really must admit that i have spent an hour or so playing around. I have three Activation Licenses to give away to three lucky people, so post a comment and I’ll send them to you
