GeoHot figures a way to downgrade baseband 02.30 to 02.28 on bootloader 5.8

George Hotz Unlocks iPhone

We have not heard anything from George Hotz for some time, but when he does chime in it’s usually of some significance.. He has posted some news for iPhone 3G owners who have bootlader 5.8 and modem firmware 02.30 and can’t run yellowsn0w to unlock the device.

In bootloader 5.8 on the 3G, the loader signature validator is broken. Someone botched an if statement checking the location and length of the loader in the cert. Because of this, you can pass the run cert for the firmware you currently have on the phone instead of the loader cert, and send whatever you want as a loader.

Here is a bspatch file to be applied to ICE2_02.28.00.fls allowing downgrades from 2.30.03 using BBUpdaterExtreme. By replacing the patched cert with your current run cert, you can downgrade from any other version.

This will really help people who have updated their iPhone 3G to 2.2.1 from 2.0, 2.1 or 2.2. Unfortunately this will not help those with 5.9 bootloader which makes up the majority of new iPhone 3G purchased in the last couple months.

I have  not been able to find much info on this and I am not willing to sacrifice my 3G by updating to test. But as I get more info I will post, there are not real tutorials for this and must be run from terminal on the iPhone with all the required files. For anyone that is brave enough to try, let us know your outcome.

iPhone Dev Team Warn 3G owners against updating to firmware 3.0

It almost goes without saying, but we will say it anyway :)

With all of the great stuff lined up for us with the 3.0 OS that Apple described today, many 3G owners may find themselves with itchy update fingers.  If you find yourself with access to the 3G IPSW for 3.0 via the iPhone Dev Center program, and you are using yellowsn0w, do not update or restore to that official IPSW.  You will lose yellowsn0w and find yourself unable to revert the baseband to get it back.

And for those wondering, yes the 3.0 OS is jailbreakable on all devices.   It’s just those using 3G yellowsn0w that have to show some restraint and wait for PwnageTool to create a custom IPSW that avoids the baseband update.

iPhone 3G Hardware Unlocked by TA_Mobile

Tuan Anh Do shows off an unlocked iPhone 3G at one of his cell phone repair shops in Hanoi. (Credit: Dong Ngo/CBS Interactive)

Tuan Anh aka TA_Mobile, Vietnamese cell shop owner and iPhone hacker, has maanged to unlock the iPhone 3G via a crazy hardware hack that involved removing the motherboard from the iPhone 3G, removing the BaseBand Chip (SGOLD) and re-flashing it and then re-fitting it to the motherboard.

TA_Mobile if you remember was the first to extract the 5.8 bootloader form the iPhone 3G via a hardware method, and has now once again proven his hardware skills. This unlocking method is really not for the faint of heart and probably no one but the TA_Mobile shops will be preforming this hack for sometime. It will set you back $80 USD, not much for most of us, but a small fortune for those in Vietnam.
