AT&T Looking For iPhone Exclusivity Until 2011

Having locked down the iPhone for at least three years, AT&T is now expected to take one more shot at an exclusive deal for the Apple handset and may keep it away from competitors until 2011.

Talking to the expected “people familiar with the matter,” the Wall Street Journal hears that AT&T has a deal to keep the iPhone in its stable until 2010 and that negotiations are underway to have the device onboard for one more year.

Not surprisingly, there is no word from AT&T on the subject, and an Apple spokeswoman would only say that the two companies have a “great relationship.”

The supposedly inside information echoes a report from last year that also said AT&T had struck a deal to keep the iPhone until 2010 and may provide insight into current talks. At the time, the cellular carrier reportedly agreed to allow iPhone 3G subsidies in exchange for a one-year extension of the iPhone’s US exclusivity. Although the cost of discounting those phones has been severe — as much as $1.3 billion to date, according to an estimate — the agreement renewed interest in AT&T and gave it millions of users paying at least $60 per month (on grandfathered plans) for service.

Also, the iPhone gives AT&T a way of keeping customers from jumping ship to Verizon or another alternative at a time when the market is saturated and customers are more likely to have switched than sign up for the first time. The company added 1.9 million iPhone users just in the fall 2008 quarter alone and notes that many of these are less likely to give up on service than those who use other phones.

No matter how successful AT&T may be in lengthening its time spent with the iPhone, the firm is likely to maintain an inherent technological basis for holding the device close until two years later. As the only major US carrier with 3G using the HSPA standard on the 850MHz band, the iPhone as-is only supports its service for full data. Adapting the phone to T-Mobile USA would most likely require adding the 1,700MHz band, while switching to Sprint or Verizon would, for now, need a complete overhaul that swaps in CDMA calling and 3G access using EVDO; either of these is expected to gradually phase out.

Eventually, AT&T and Verizon will share the same network format when they both move to 4G using the Long Term Evolution format, but neither expects to have any significant networks until 2010, rendering any truly multi-carrier US iPhone impractical until the possible new expiry date for the agreement between AT&T and Apple.

Contract-Free iPhone Available Next Thursday

AT&T has confirmed that contract-free iPhone 3Gs will be coming to the market next Thursday! That’s awesome knews for those who can’t afford to be tied down to a contract just to get an iPhone!

Each phone will cost $400 more than their subsidized versions at $599 for the 8GB and $699 for the 16GB. The phones will still remain locked to AT&T and will require the standard iPhone data plan.

Most point out this move as an indication of the iPhone 3G’s end of service as the most recent version of the iPhone.

New iPhone To Be Much Faster Internet-Wise?

You might have read about the references to new iPhones and new iPod Touch in iPhone firmware 3.0 beta and also the interesting screenshot from iPhone Firmware 3.0 beta which is labeled “Publish Video” which indicates that video recording capabilities could be coming to the next generation iPhone.

We now have Silicon Alley Insider reporting that as per their mobile industry source, the next generation iPhone will have “a significantly faster Internet connection.”

However, Silicon Alley Insider didn’t get any further details from their source on whether “faster internet connection” meant faster cellular or faster Wi-Fi connectivity but they put down some of the possible options:

  • This can’t be referring to AT&T’s 4G (LTE) network, because that won’t be ready for a year or more.
  • This might be referring to faster wifi, and not faster 3G access? (802.11n vs. its current 802.11g/b.)
  • AT&T has repeatedly vowed to speed up its 3G network via updates to the network. Is it possible that the current iPhone can’t support those increased speeds?
  • We don’t expect Apple to comment, but we’ve asked.

Based on this, Electronvista speculates that it could mean that thenew iPhone could support AT&T’s plans for faster 3G running at 7.2 Mbps, up from the 3.6 Mbps speed of the current network.

However, the most likely change is the addition of support for speed-doubled 7.2Mbps 3G given both hardware manufacturer and carrier plans. Infineon should have a new 3G chipset starting from mid-year that would support the faster speeds while also improving battery life. At the same time, AT&T has been trialing 7.2Mbps 3G since late 2008 and should roll out the speedier service this year. The provider has stressed that many of its cell towers can be upgraded solely through software rather than new equipment.

Current iPhones are limited in hardware to 3.6Mbps 3G and couldn’t themselves be upgraded.

And if the rumor is related to faster Wi-Fi connection then Electronvista speculates that:

a potential candidate is a new Broadcom 802.11 chipset that would provide real Wi-Fi speeds of up to 50Mbps (versus 25Mbps for typical 802.11g)

First Cortex-A9 Multi-Core Mobile Platform Rumored for new iPhone Demonstrated

ST-Ericsson and ARM announced that they will be demonstrating the world’s first Symmetric Multi Processing (SMP)-enabled mobile platform at a private event at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The technological breakthrough is the first of its kind and is based on the ARM(R) Cortex(TM)-A9 multicore processor, which represents a significant leap from previous generations of baseband/application processor architectures by providing unprecedented levels of performance and power efficiency.

An ST-Ericsson representative explains that having multiple processor cores will improve real-time performance on mobile devices for a better user experience. The demonstration model will, of course, be running the Symbian OS.

The same Cortex-A9 multicore processor has been postulated as the CPU behind the rumors of Apple’s next generation iPhone. ZDNet reported that the next generation iPhone could support up to quad-core processors. There has been some debate about how quickly ARM would be able to ramp up these processors as the original timeline for the Cortex-A9 had targeted late 2009/early 2010.

Apple appears to have invested heavily in bringing ARM design and development in-house with their acquisition of P.A. Semi and speculation that they are an architectural licensee of ARM’s processors.

New photos may show rear of next-gen iPhone casing

Leaked photos on Thursday purport to reveal a new iPhone design with an unfamiliar model number and a more subdued, matte black surface.

The images, first sent to iPod Observer in early form but followed up by a couple of larger versions atMacRumors, show what at first looks to be the familiar, tapered back of iPhone 3G but give signs that they may represent an entirely different model.

The empty shell appears to have official model markings for a 16GB iPhone but lists a new model number, A1303, that doesn’t correlate to existing iPhone models with the same capacity. Existing 16GB iPhone 3G units often have the model number A1241.

More tellingly, the example put on display drops the glossy coat that has defined both black and white iPhone 3G models since launch. It’s instead a dull, matte finish not unlike the back of current aluminum iMac models. The tip to Mac Rumors implies that the finish is also textured and less prone to slipping out of one’s hand.

Supposedly originating from China, the photos are difficult to authenticate and still carry the risk of being identified as fakes. However, they’re posted by the Observer in the belief that its history with sources supports this latest leak; tellingly, the news site was one of the first to have a photo of what was later confirmed to be the iPhone 3G’s back.

There have yet to be additional rumors supporting the change in case design, though Apple has been steadily dropping hints of a widely anticipated iPhone revision, including a hardware identifier string for an unreleased iPhone 2,1 and statements by both Apple’s Phil Schiller and carrier partners that allude to a June refresh.
