Sn0wBreeze & BlackRa1n News

Sn0wBreeze is a new project aiming to bring PwnageTool functionality to Windows computers by October 12th.

iH8sn0w tweeted some details about the upcoming software…

The new project that we are working on is sn0wbreeze. It is basically PwnageTool for Windows. Our ETA is October 12.

We will ask for Beta Testers as soon as we have a stable build ready!

It will be pretty much everything the the Mac version of PwnageTool can do atm.

GeoHot has posted picture evidence of a jailbroken third generation iPod Touch to his blog.

For those waiting eagerly to jailbreak their iPhones and iPods, GeoHot plans to release the jailbreak tool within the next day or so.

The exploit should work for every version of iPhone OS including OS 3.1.

10 seconds. and may work for every version of software *ever*, based on the prettiness of the exploit

The soon to be released jailbreak tool by GeoHot has been named BlackRa1n and will be found at http://www.blackra1n.com.

iPhone Dev Team: The needs of the many…

Spock said it best: “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few…”

The needs of the many...

Summary:

We can jailbreak the 3GS right now.  But making our jailbreak public at this point in time would benefit relatively few people.  It would in fact be detrimental to many more people than it would help.  So we feel it’s best to keep our version of the jailbreak out of Apple’s sights for the time being.

Details:

If you already have a 3GS phone and have already done a full USB dump or captured your img3’s signed with your ECID, then you’re in great shape.  You will always be able to jailbreak.  But many people who plan on getting a 3GS do not yet have one. For instance, many people are waiting for their existing contracts to mature to the point where they get a price break on the 3GS.  Many people are trying to sell their 3G before they can buy the 3GS.  There are parts of the globe where you can’t even buy a 3GS yet! The reasons are varied, but they are many.

The nature of the 3GS hardware allows Apple to stop IPSWs from being usable unless you’ve already gotten the signed chunks they send to you based on your ECID (a unique chip ID).  You cannot get these signed chunks without knowing your ECID, and you don’t know your ECID until you’ve bought your 3GS.

The jailbreak requires at least one signed iBoot-family img3 for your device.  And that iBoot needs to have an exploitable bug.  It’s an all-or-nothing deal…you either have your signed exploitable iBoot ready to use, for now and forever — always jailbreakable — or you have nothing.

Here’s the critical point, the reason why we’re delaying our version of the jailbreak: Once the jailbreak is out, Apple will fix the iBoot-family bug we use to accomplish it.  They will simply stop signing the old iBoots and only sign the fixed ones.  If you bought your phone after Apple has done this, there’s nothing you can do…the jailbreak isn’t going to work for you.

It is possible that Apple will find the bug we use without our handing it to them on a silver platter (via a public jailbreak).  In that case, we will have delayed our jailbreak for “nothing”.  But we’d rather be safe than sorry!

Apple is surely coming out with a 3.0.1 firmware release shortly. They need to fix ultrasn0w.  They need to fix some UI issues.  3.0 is buggy and 3.0.1 is coming.  We’re going to wait and see what 3.0.1 brings before figuring out the release date for our version of the jailbreak.

In the meantime, we have some remaining 3.0 jailbreak issues to investigate, including push notification.  Thanks for being patient with us while we took a 3GS “timeout”!

AT&T Looking For iPhone Exclusivity Until 2011

Having locked down the iPhone for at least three years, AT&T is now expected to take one more shot at an exclusive deal for the Apple handset and may keep it away from competitors until 2011.

Talking to the expected “people familiar with the matter,” the Wall Street Journal hears that AT&T has a deal to keep the iPhone in its stable until 2010 and that negotiations are underway to have the device onboard for one more year.

Not surprisingly, there is no word from AT&T on the subject, and an Apple spokeswoman would only say that the two companies have a “great relationship.”

The supposedly inside information echoes a report from last year that also said AT&T had struck a deal to keep the iPhone until 2010 and may provide insight into current talks. At the time, the cellular carrier reportedly agreed to allow iPhone 3G subsidies in exchange for a one-year extension of the iPhone’s US exclusivity. Although the cost of discounting those phones has been severe — as much as $1.3 billion to date, according to an estimate — the agreement renewed interest in AT&T and gave it millions of users paying at least $60 per month (on grandfathered plans) for service.

Also, the iPhone gives AT&T a way of keeping customers from jumping ship to Verizon or another alternative at a time when the market is saturated and customers are more likely to have switched than sign up for the first time. The company added 1.9 million iPhone users just in the fall 2008 quarter alone and notes that many of these are less likely to give up on service than those who use other phones.

No matter how successful AT&T may be in lengthening its time spent with the iPhone, the firm is likely to maintain an inherent technological basis for holding the device close until two years later. As the only major US carrier with 3G using the HSPA standard on the 850MHz band, the iPhone as-is only supports its service for full data. Adapting the phone to T-Mobile USA would most likely require adding the 1,700MHz band, while switching to Sprint or Verizon would, for now, need a complete overhaul that swaps in CDMA calling and 3G access using EVDO; either of these is expected to gradually phase out.

Eventually, AT&T and Verizon will share the same network format when they both move to 4G using the Long Term Evolution format, but neither expects to have any significant networks until 2010, rendering any truly multi-carrier US iPhone impractical until the possible new expiry date for the agreement between AT&T and Apple.

GeoHot figures a way to downgrade baseband 02.30 to 02.28 on bootloader 5.8

George Hotz Unlocks iPhone

We have not heard anything from George Hotz for some time, but when he does chime in it’s usually of some significance.. He has posted some news for iPhone 3G owners who have bootlader 5.8 and modem firmware 02.30 and can’t run yellowsn0w to unlock the device.

In bootloader 5.8 on the 3G, the loader signature validator is broken. Someone botched an if statement checking the location and length of the loader in the cert. Because of this, you can pass the run cert for the firmware you currently have on the phone instead of the loader cert, and send whatever you want as a loader.

Here is a bspatch file to be applied to ICE2_02.28.00.fls allowing downgrades from 2.30.03 using BBUpdaterExtreme. By replacing the patched cert with your current run cert, you can downgrade from any other version.

This will really help people who have updated their iPhone 3G to 2.2.1 from 2.0, 2.1 or 2.2. Unfortunately this will not help those with 5.9 bootloader which makes up the majority of new iPhone 3G purchased in the last couple months.

I have  not been able to find much info on this and I am not willing to sacrifice my 3G by updating to test. But as I get more info I will post, there are not real tutorials for this and must be run from terminal on the iPhone with all the required files. For anyone that is brave enough to try, let us know your outcome.

Proofof Video Capture capabilities in iPhone firmware 3.0

Since the release of Apple’s iPhone 3.0 beta firmware, users have been scouring the configuration files looking for evidence of future iPhone capabilities. The possibility of video recording has seemed increasingly certain with files for video uploading and editing having been discovered.

A new finding, however, should put to rest any doubts about whether or not Apple is planning to include video recording in future iPhones. This screenshot, which was discovered in the latest iPhone 3.0 beta, shows the interface Apple will provide for video recording:

The interface shows the normal iPhone camera interface but with a switch on the bottom right which toggles between still camera photography and video recording. The video recording is not presently functional in iPhone 3.0 beta, and the interface is not accessible by default. Only when configuration files were modified telling the firmware that a Video Camera was present will this interface appear.

Other interesting capabilities found in the configuration files include “auto-focus camera”, “magnetometer” (digital compass), and “Voice Control”.

Apple is expected to release the final version of iPhone 3.0 this summer, and many believe that Apple will also introduce an updated iPhone around that time as well.

‘iPhone 3G Pro’ To Support 802.11n?

Specifications contained in the iPhone 3.0 firmware indicate that it will support low power 802.11n wireless networking, according to an AppleInsider report.

The new version of the existing Broadcom chip that supplies WiFi and Bluetooth on existing models jumps from BCM4325 to BCM4329. The component upgrade adds new support for 802.11n features, including the ability to find and join 5GHz networks.

Existing iPhone and iPod touch models only support 5GHz 802.11a networks, or 2.4GHz 802.11b/g networks, forcing users who want the top speed of 802.11n (available on all MacBooks) but compatibility with 802.11b/g networks (to use the existing iPhone) to set up a 2.4GHz compatible network. That compromise forces the wireless network to deal with interference from other networks on the often crowded 2.4GHz band.
