Sorry for the lack of Updates to MyTriniPhone

WOW!, its been months since i posted to this blog, and now looking at it I have 60 comments, 500 spam and 19 plugins to update :D

I must really apologize for not updating the site or making any announcement of the state, for that I am truely sorry. I must also thank SRASC (Scott) for occasionally posting updates to the site. And most of all thank you to the ~600 or so subscribers and members that have stuck around.

I have been thinking of selling the site recently and was made a few good offers. But I am also thinking of updating the site and covering a wider range of topics and phones.

Let me know what you guys think.

  1. Would you like to see more phone brands discussed a covered on MyTriniPhone?
  2. Would you like to have an iPhone/Phone Accessory Store?
  3. Improved Forums and Tutorials Sections?
Any other ideas, please let me know.
Oh and if you are interested in purchasing MyTriniPhone, please contact me.

GeoHot: iPhone 3GS Owners Should Do This Now

Apple has added a new layer of security for the iPhone 3GS and steps need to be taken to prevent these measures from affecting future jailbreaks.

Apple has added a new layer of security to the iPhone 3GS. I mentioned it several posts earlier; it’s the ECID field. When iTunes starts the restore process, they contact Apple servers to generate signatures just for your device. It’s important you get these signatures for your phone before a new version of the software comes out. I had previously suggested doing this by dumping usb while the iPhone restores. But this is complicated.

Thanks to GeoHot purplera1n.com will help you generate a unique certificate for your phones iBSS. You will need to keep this certificate for possible use in the future.

Instructions can be found here: WindowsMac.

Multi-Touch Click-Wheels?

Having pioneered multi-touch for its iPhone and iPod touch handhelds, Apple later extended the technology to trackpads on its Mac notebook line and now appears ripe to introduce the first iPod click-wheels with similar capabilities.

Though sales of the iPod touch have taken off in recent quarters, recent reports suggest that we haven’t seen the last of click-wheel-based iPods, the next of which is expected to turn up this fall in the form of a fifth-generation iPod nano with a built-in digital camera and more compact circular scroll wheel.

This new nano could be the first iPod support multi-touch gestures through its click-wheel, according to recent patent filing discovered by AppleInsider this week that details methods for detecting “input gestures that traverse the center of the scroll wheel and to detect multi-touch input.”

More specifically, the 38-page filing made just this past September describes a “multi-dimensional scroll wheel” that “can sense a moving object, such as a finger, as it is moved not only in a rotational manner but also in a linear manner across the center of the scroll wheel.” This new breed of scroll wheel would also be capable of sensing more than one object at a time, such as multi-finger touch or motion.

“Applications can be enhanced by the improved range of input enabled by the scroll wheel circuitry,” Apple explained. “For example, linear motion, such as a swipe across the scroll wheel, can enable an image browsing application to cause images, such as album cover pictures for example, to be transitioned across a screen.”

Multi-touch input, such as one finger touching an inner region of the scroll and another finger rotating in the outer region, can also enable a zooming application to cause a displayed image to be zoomed-in or out, depending on the direction of the rotation. Similarly, a pinching or expanding of a user’s fingers can enable the zooming application to cause a zooming action.

“The scroll wheel circuitry can also bias the sensor element configuration according to the type of input event expected,” the filing adds. “For example, if a particular application permits only linear motion input along a particular axis (e.g., a horizontal or vertical swipe), the scroll wheel circuitry can utilize only the sensor elements arranged along that path to sense for an input event. By using less than all available sensor elements in this manner, the scroll wheel circuitry can achieve power savings.”

The filing is credited to over half a dozen Apple engineers, including Lakshman Rathnam, Louis Bokma, Fletcher Rothkopf, Andrea Mucignat, Erturk Kocalar, Benjamin Lyon and Joseph Fisher.

Palm Pre Syncs With iTunes

Palm’s upcoming Pre handset is again making headlines this week after it was discovered that early production units contain native support for syncing with Apple’s iTunes software as if they were built by the iPhone maker itself.

Fortune notes that this isn’t an entirely new revelation, given that it was mentioned back in January during the Consumer Electronics Show, but only recently has the tech media really clamped down on the matter.

“Plug a Pre into a Mac and it syncs, seamlessly, with Apple’s iTunes,” the financial publication reports. “In fact, the iTunes Store treats the Pre just as it would an iPod or an iPhone with one exception: it can’t handle old copy-protected songs.”

While there have been a handful of third party hacks that allow iTunes to recognize some of Palm’s existing handsets, the Pre is believed to have such code built natively into its firmware. At issue is how Palm may be achieving this particular result and whether Apple will condone encroachment on its tightly controlled ecosystem by one of its rivals.

The development of the Pre, due to launch just days before the iPhone maker is expected to take the wraps off its latest line of handsets, has been spearheaded by a number of former Apple employees who are privy to the underpinnings of the company’s technology. Among them is Palm president Jon Rubinstein, who spent years overseeing the development of iPods over in Cupertino.

Many industry watchers believe the Pre represents the greatest threat to the iPhone yet. It features similar touch-screen technology and an attractive new webOS that appears to take several design cues from Apple’s iPhone software with some added bells and whistles to boot.

During a recent conference call, acting Apple chief executive Tim Cook vowed to vigorously defend against any competitor who treads on his company’s intellectual property, but stopped short of calling out Palm by name.

“I’m not talking about any specific company. I’m just making a general statement,” he said. “We think competition is good, it makes us better. But we will not stand to have our IP ripped off. We’ll use whatever weapons we have at our disposal. I don’t know that I can be more clear than that.”

Steve Still Actively Involved; Working On New Device

The Wall Street Journal reports that Steve Jobs is actively involved in running Apple from home and that he is expected back in June.

People inside the company, business partners and others who are familiar with the situation say life at the Cupertino, Calif., company remains much the same as it did before. Those at other corporations who deal with the company also say their interactions with Apple haven’t changed. Mr. Cook, who had already been handling most of Apple’s day-to-day operations, has kept tight control over the company, say business partners and those inside Apple.

The WSJ also suggests that Jobs is working on a new device smaller than the MacBook Air and bigger then the iPhone.

Apple co-founder Mr. Jobs, who is considered the company’s creative leader, is also involved in the development of future projects, they say. People privy to the company’s strategy say Apple is working on new iPhone models and a portable device that is smaller than its current laptop computers but bigger than the iPhone or iPod Touch.

Apple spokesman Steve Dowling is quoted as saying “Steve continues to look forward to returning to Apple at the end of June.”

New PSP To Compete With iPhone?

(Mock Up)

Thanks to a chatty developer, we recently heard and relayed rumors that the next-generation PSP will have a sliding screen. Well, a second mystery developer, who’s allegedly “working with the new hardware,” has upped the ante: he or she claims Sony’s next-gen portable gaming console will actually have a sliding touch screen along with the much-requested, dual-analog thumbsticks.
This all comes from Pocket Gamer, which doesn’t name its “insider” source but says, “The new handheld will arrive before Christmas and will be far more similar to the iPhone than the current device.” It also claims the new PSP will be announced in June at E3.
Take the rumor for what it’s worth, but all the chatter seems to suggest that a new PSP will be a true PSP 2 and not just another incremental upgrade. Pocket Gamer speculates that Sony accelerated development on the new device after the success of the iPhone and the arrival of the Nintendo DSi. There’s also continued talk that the new PSP will forgo UMD and instead rely on an expanded PlayStation Store that rivals Apple’s App Store (at least in terms of games).
If this all pans out the way the rumors are pointing, I don’t think there’s any doubt that the PSP will be a better gaming device than the iPhone. The question is, what else will it be capable of doing? As I’ve said before, if Sony can integrate some of the features found in its Mylo Communicator, things get very interesting. If not, Pocket Gamer probably won’t be able to go around calling the new PSP an “iPhone beater.”
