Dev Team crack 2.0 - Installer, Cydia and AppStore working in harmony

UPDATE:

Video - PWNAGE Tool for iPhone 3G and iPhone/Touch 2.0 Firmware

Check the link above for PWNAGE Tool screenshots.

The Dev Team have done it, as I predicted (and I am sure many of you did also). 2.0 has been PWNED big time. Looks like they have gotten the AppStore, Installer and Cydia working (compiled and ported) for iPhone firmware 2.0.

This is huge news for iPhone and iPod touch owners who will be able to continue using their devices with firmware 2.0 as they were before, now with the the AppStore and Exchange etc.

No word yet on when the new PWNED tool will be available to download and test out. But I am sure it will be soon.

Best of all, is all of this is free, and I mean free, the Dev Team don’t even want a donation, they are doing this for the love of you and iPhones (Touches too :P)

Here is a little message posted on their blog regarding donations and the latest from the dev team.

I got to get me some post cards :P

“Donations to /dev/null

We’ve seen some comments about you lovely people wanting to donate money to us. We’d just like to say that we DO NOT accept donations. There is no paypal account associated to us, there is no way to donate to us, we do this as a hobby and don’t want to be paid and we fund all of this ourselves and it works out just fine.

Anyone who says “donate to DevTeam” in our name is lying, so don’t send them anything, you’ll just fund their crack habit.

Keep your dough for the lovely shiny Apple products, we think you’ll need it.

If you do want to send us something, please send a scan of a postcard from your city, handwrite a nice message scan it and sent it over to blog@iphone-dev.com

We prefer old fashioned courtesy over flashing animated location maps, we are simple like that. We’ll post the best ones on a page on the wiki.

Also if you are interested  you can look at our favorite foods but again you can’t send us these!

First person to email us a scan of a postcard from their city will win a Kinder-Egg.”

So go out and send them a post car, and to check out more screen shots of 2.0 - click here

iTunes 7.7 - iPhone Firmware 2.0 - AppStore - Available Online

Looks like Apple was busy last night getting ready for the big launch of the 3G iPhone tomorrow. They have started off by releasing iTunes 7.7 that is required to install firmware 2.0 on your iPhone or iPod Touch. With iTunes 7.7 released it would have only been a little while before 2.0 firmware was released, but before that could even happen, the iPhone 2.0 Firmware was found on Apples Servers for direct download. You can download it here.

“Use iTunes 7.7 to sync music, video, and more with iPhone 3G, and download applications from the iTunes Store exclusively designed for iPhone and iPod touch with software version 2.0 or later. Also use the new Remote application for iPhone or iPod touch to control iTunes playback from anywhere in your home — a free download from the App Store.”

BUT please do not install it until you get news from the Dev Team about PWNED or an unlock, as the current version of PWNED does not recognize the 2.0 firmware. It’s not quote the rumored 5A345 that was rumored to be the final firmware shipped in iPhone 3G’s. It’s 5A347.

While the AppStore isn’t live yet, you can click on any of the links below to see the AppStore online (thanks to iClarified for the links)

UPDATE: I updated my iTunes to 7.7, and I saw the AppStore, but iTunes asked me to verify my billing info and I did and then the AppStore dissappeared. Apple has probably blocked the AppStore from unsupported countries based on your creditcard info and IP address - if so - Apple you suck - I have an iPod touch and would like to buy Apps for it too..

Update: I got back into the AppStore and have successfully downloaded (purchased) the free Apps available (remote app of course)

Update: I am restoring an iPhone I had with “BSD minor, BSD major” error from currupted baseband, it would usually get error 1101 in itunes, and was pretty much useless. lets see if 2.0 can fix :)

The Cat and Mouse game is back - Apple vs iPhone Dev Team

Back in November 2008, when the iPhone was launched in the UK, Steve Jobs said that “It’s a cat-and-mouse game,” when asked about hackers unlocking the iPhone.  “We try to stay ahead. People will try to break in, and it’s our job to stop them breaking in.”

Well it looks like the cat and mouse game is back on with the iPhone 3G and firmware 2.0, and so far Tom seems to be kicking Jerry’s arse - so far.

Apple has found a new way to strike back, and this time it seems to be working. By making the iPhone 3G widely available in over 70 countries by year end, and by making it extremely difficult (and expensive) to get an iPhone 3G without a contract, it will be available for purchase to most people who ended up buying a 1st gen and unlocking it. Allot of people will simply not need or want an unlock cause they can now purchase an iPhone from their local carrier as use it with full service and benefits. They have also managed to discourage one of the main players in iPhone unlocking - GeoHotz.

The Dev Team have been dropping hints recently that they are onto something. Many (myself included) think that they have totally blown the doors off iPhone firmware 2.0 for first gen iPhones. I think they have successfully re-compiled PWNED and BootNeuter to unlock the 2.0 baseband and maybe even work with the iPhone 3G baseband (if they have managed to get a hold of an iPhone 3G - and from the number of blogs and tech sites that have been doing reviews and 3G iPhone unboxings - I think they have one by now).

AppleInsider claims that the build number of iPhone Software 2.0 shipping on iPhone 3G handsets that will go on sale Friday is ‘5A345. BUT-  Sam over on Hackint0sh says “AppleInsider is wrong. Wait 2 days please..
Others speculate that only the first batch of iPhone 3G will have this 5A345 build of 2.0, after that it will be a more secure version (maybe that’s why stores and resellers are getting such low supplies). Makes me wonder - Have the Dev Team unlocked the Gold Master 5A345 or have they gotten some other trick up their sleeve?

But what about Installer and the AppStore?

It’s been made pretty clear that the current build of Installer will not run on iPhone firmware 2.0, and I am guessing that apps distributed/signed for the AppStore are not going to work on Jailbreaked iPhones either (nor allow purchasing from countries not recognized by iTunes). SO a new Installer is needed, and I have heard through the grape vine that this is in the works. (if not completed already).

But will the new Installer run allow you to install AppStore Apps? Who Knows, All I can say is that I really hope that 2.0 is unlockable for those wanting and needing Exchange Email support. But the main attraction to iPhone firmware 2.0 is the AppStore, and I believe that without a legit activated iPhone, running 2.0, you are not going to be able to purchase from the AppStore. - I hope I am wrong.

All I can say is thank god I have an iPod Touch, so I can try out the new apps and games from the AppStore. I will wait until the dust settles to see what I am going o do with regard to upgrading my beloved unlocked iPhone.

iPhone Dev-Team are onto something - PWNED 2.0 soon?

With only four days left until the iPhone 3G, the OSX iPhone 2.0 Firmware is released and the grand opening of the AppStore for the iPhone and iPod Touch, the trusty Dev-Team are onto something - and it looks like something BIG.

There is allot of speculation about a post titled “Oh My” that featured a simple graphic that appeared on their “unofficial/official blog” with the words “Click here for iPhone™ - Our compilers are working overtime…”.

With no official/unofficial explanation of what this graphic is, or where it comes from, rumors, dreams and wishes are starting to get the rumor mill going again, and a quick glance at the comments quickly show you what people are thinking. But the dev’s have also dropped a few hints in the mix as well:

“Hah well let’s just say that this particular post was done (a) *with* team consent; and (b) by someone who *knew* what they were talking about :)”

“We were still in the process of verifying whether Apple could do anything to change the ramdisk encryption key, or otherwise denying us this access method in the future. Instead of waiting for that to complete, Zibri unilaterally released the key on his blog without checking it with anyone else. After he posted on the blog, the rest of us were publicly silent because we were still frantically trying to determine what to do with a loose cannon like him. You know how that story ended.

This being on the team’s blog and doesn’t leak anything, I think this is much better. ;)”

Well obviously by these two comments from those in the know clearly suggest that they are making some progress. Sounds to me like they have gotten a hold of the ramdisk of the OSX iPhone 2.0 Gold Master Firmware, and are compiling PMNED 2.0 to allow us plebs to create unlocked and activated custom 2.0 Firmwares. Maybe (hopefully) they have gotten a hold of a iPhone 3G?  An unlock for the iPhone 3G on the same day it is sold would be mind blowing, and I am sure to probably make Steve age 10 years in a few hours.

Now I may be getting ahead of myself, but the Dev-Team doesn’t usually post anything until they are sure they will deliver something in the near future. Because they know all too well that allot of people are watching them closely and waiting for a solution to Jailbreak/Activate and Unlock OSX iPhone 2.0 and hopefully the iPhone 3G as well.

Where ever that graphic comes from, whether it be from some part of iTunes Activation of the iPhoen 3G and OSX iPhone 2.0, or if it’s part of the new interface for PWNED 2.0 to create custom unlocked iPhone firmwares, only the Dev-Team can elude to right now. in the mean while, try and distract yourself with your life until the 11th of July (that goes for me too).

Polarbit who brought us Raging Thunder, is working on a Crash Bandicoot-branded kart racing game for the iPhone.

It so far looks like the best karting game for the iPhone yet. Here are some of the key features and screens hots from the developers website, and stay tuned for more info on pricing and availability.

Key features:
– Stunning, console quality graphics
– Twelve beautifully crafted tracks
– The famous Crash Bandicoot cast of characters
– A host of weapons, items and power-ups
– Fully configurable controls

Apple posts iPhone 3G Guided Tour and What’s New Videos

Apple has always delivered when it comes to creating and producing amazing and easy to follow tutorials and presentations, and this time is no different. The iPhone 3G, which will be available on July 11th, should seem almost familiar in your hands with these two great new videos from Apple.

The Guided Tour is obviously for iPhone newbies (but is still good to watch or skip through to maybe find features you didn’t already know (I saw some cool features with the Apple headphones that I didn’t already know - double clicking the mic to skip songs etc - cool stuff).

The What’s New vid is great is you just want to check out the new software and hardware features and then get on with your life. (I like how the apps you purchase on your iPhone will download right there on the springboard with a progress bar and allow you to continue using your phone - are you listening Installer/AppTapp/RipDev :))

I must admit, when the iPhone 3G was first announced i wasn’t so impressed, but seeing it being used with the new features (and I  guess the rumor-hype has entirely wore off). I want one, even if it costs me $699 USD.
