Lately there has been alot of video recording apps released in the App Store that delivers for iPhone 2G & 3G owners that Apple neglected. Here’s a run down of them all against the incumbant Cycorder from Cydia creator Saurik.

My thoughts are that iVideoCamera was 1st but now looks like the worst. Only 3 frames per second, for a minute & the smallest resolution makes it to me an easy avoid.

Camcorder was aright. Better than iVideoCamera but with no ability to transfer your videos anywhere doesn’t make it cut in my book.

iVidCam was the next to come. Out of the non-jailbroken available video recorders it has the best maximum FPS, matches Camcorder for video length but beats it for resolution.

Then of course there’s Cycorder, which is available only via jailbreaking. It has more than twice the maximum frames per second than any other video recording app available (only beaten by the 3GS’s 30 FPS), ties with Camcorder & iVidCam in terms of video length and beats them with resoution. To top it all off, its free.

So I think the choice is obvious, if you’ve jailbroken your iPhone 2G & 3G & already have Cycorder then there’s no need to get rid of it. If you don’t already have it, then get it. However if you aren’t tech savy enough to jailbreak an iPhone then I think you’d be happy with iVidCam.

Ustream announced Wednesday the availability of Ustream Live Broadcaster in the iPhone App Store. The company touts that it is the first live broadcast software made available for the iPhone and iPod touch. With it, anyone can broadcast live video from their phone. 

“The Ustream Live Broadcaster is a free app that enables live streaming on 3G or Wifi, and users can notify their Twitter communities when they start broadcasting, and interact with their viewers using chat or Twitter through Ustream’s Social Stream,” the company said.

The application is said to require the iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS with iPhone OS 3.1 or later. It allows polls, works in portrait mode, can auto-record, and can record and save for upload later. Recordings can be shared on Ustream, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. The free 6.1MB download is available through iTunes.

(Correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t Qik (available in Cydia & now the App Store for a while now) do the same thing?)

ZodTTD is working on a port of N64 for the iPhone 3GS and the iPod touch 3G. 

The port is being developed for these two models because: 
- They’re the fastest Apple handhelds in term of raw CPU performance. 
- They both have a faster GPU (Graphic Processing Unit) which allows for OpenGL ES 2.0 specifications. 

So yes you may soon see N64 on your favorite Apple device. But I can’t promise it will run games top notch just yet, as things are too early to say. There’s hope though, with a 3D accelerated graphics plugin, as well as an ARM dynarec. If you have a previous generation device, I can use software rendering, but it will slow things down further, along with the slower CPU.

Codium Labs has released Babelshot, a revolutionary application that allows automatic real-time translation of printed text using iPhone camera. Busy professionals and foreign travelers can use Babelshot to instantly translate items like restaurant menus, hotel booklets, product manuals, or snippets from books and newspapers. 

All you have to do is select source and target languages, take a photo of the item, and select text portion of it that you want to translate. The translated text is then displayed next to the original photo of the item and can be saved for future reference. No typing on iPhone keyboard is needed. 

Babelshot supports automatic translation between 32 world languages. Options are available for manual correction of recognition errors that may occur in complex or imperfect documents, as well as for full manual input. 

Babelshot incorporates innovative image processing algorithms coupled with state-of-the-art Tesseract Optical Character Recognition (OCR) engine, adapted and optimized for use on mobile devices. Unlike existing OCR-enabled applications for iPhone, Babelshot does not offload text recognition task to web server and performs text recognition on mobile device in real-time.

Car security company Directed Electronics is unveiling a new iPhone application Tuesday that lets customers control parts of their Viper SmartStart-enabled vehicle from their iPhone or iPod Touch. 

The app, called Viper SmartStart, is quite similar toZipcar’s recently released iPhone app, except it can work with your car, and not one you’re renting for the weekend. It too creates a virtual keychain control module that can do things like lock and unlock your vehicle, open the trunk, and activate the alarm, getting rid of the need to carry around one of those keychain clickers as long as you’ve got your phone handy. 

Coolest of all, though, there’s a “Smart Start” button in the center of the screen that can turn on your vehicle. The company is promoting this as a simple way to defrost or cool off a car before you get in–that is, assuming you correctly set the climate controls the last time you were inside. 

Since the app uses the iPhone’s data connection to send the commands, you can control your car (or cars) from anywhere you have an EDGE or 3G signal. It also means you can use it on a non-cellular data device like the iPod Touch, as long as it’s near Wi-Fi. 

The app is completely free, but it requires you have Viper’s SmartStart system installed in each car you want to take control of. This costs $499 for a new installation, or $299 for cars that already have a Viper alarm system, as well as an active subscription to Viper’s Smart Start service. Buyers of the system get a year of the $29.99 service included when they get the service installed; then they have to pay after that.

Apple may be developing a Radio app for the iPhone and iPod touch, according to 9to5Mac. 

The application is said to run in the background like the iPod app and be very similar to the FM radio in the new iPod nanos. It could even be incorporated into the iPod app. 

The holdup on this app is apparently the integration of iTunes with the program. When listening to the radio you will be able to easily purchase the song using the Mobile iTunes Store. 

9to5Mac also hypothesis that the app will likely have the same Live Pause functionality that the Nanos currently enjoy. 

Both the Broadcom BCM4325 chip in the iPhone 3GS and the Broadcom BCM4329FKUBG chip in the new iPod touch support FM.

Adobe on Monday announced partnerships with numerous handset operating system makers, including Research in Motion, Nokia, Palm, Google and Microsoft, to bring Flash Player 10.1 to smartphones. Absent from the list: Apple. 

Flash 10.1 is expected to be available as a public beta for Google Android and Nokia’s Symbian OS in early 2010. Developer betas of the browser-based runtime will be available for Windows Mobile and Palm webOS later this year. No date was given for BlackBerry devices. 

Adobe said that the new mobile version of Flash offers accelerated video and graphics capabilities while conserving battery life. The new player offers streaming video in HD and browser-based Web applications. 

“With Flash Player moving to new mobile platforms, users will be able to experience virtually all Flash technology based Web content and applications wherever they are,” said David Wadhwani, general manager and vice president, Platform Business Unit at Adobe. “We are excited about the broad collaboration of close to 50 industry leaders in the Open Screen Project and the ongoing collaboration with 19 out of the top 20 handset manufacturers worldwide. It will be great to see first devices ship with full Flash Player in the first half of next year.” 

Of course, the elusive twentieth manufacturer missing from Adobe’s lineup is Apple. 

Though the iPhone is not included among the handsets, past reports have suggested that Adobe hopes to bring it to the platform. If that were to happen, though, Flash would have to overcome its various shortcomings on mobile devices as perceived by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. 

With Flash 10.1, Adobe aims to have cross-compatibility with PCs, smartphones, netbooks and a range of devices with various screen sizes. The effort is a part of the company’s Open Screen Project initiative, which includes more than 50 companies.

Though Flash is still not available on the iPhone, Adobe announced Monday that developers will be able to export their applications created in the format within CS5 for submission to Apple’s App Store. 

Accordingly, Adobe launched its new “Applications for iPhone” Web page, touting the ability to build applications for the iPhone and iPod touch using ActionScript 3. The page shows three applications that were created via Flash and ported to the iPhone OS as native software. 

“We’ve done a lot of work to make sure that applications are quick and interactive, and give you the kind of experience that you would expect from Flash, as well as the kind of experience that you’ve come to expect on your iPhone,” said Adrian Ludwig, a member of Adobe’s Flash team. 

The applications currently available on the App Store are Chroma Circuit, Trading Stuff, Fickleblox, Just Letters, South Park, That Roach Game and Red Hood. All were created with a pre-relse build of Flash Professional CS5. 

“What developers have to do is they have to go inside of Flash Pro and they have to export that project to a native application for the iPhone,” Ludwig said. “While you’re using Flash Pro to build these applications, it’s being converted from .SWF to .IPA.” 

He noted that the method is in compliance with the iPhone developer agreement, which means the software can be submitted to the App Store for approval. The feature will be available for both PC and Mac, and a public beta is planned for later this year.

A pleasant return as Steve Jobs, Apple CEO delivers his 1st keynote in quite a while. Here’s a rundown of what happened.

He announces that Apple has sold 30 million iPhones to date & then announces iPhone OS 3.1 (available today). A new feature in 3.1 is now the Genius feature extends to Apps as well. Also that 30 000 ringtones from the 4 major labels will be available for $1.29 USD.

iTunes 9 is then introduced. (Oh iTunes 8 we barely got to know you…)

A new feature that iTunes 9 brings is Genius Mixes.

Imagine a genius DJ that plays endless mixes of songs from your library that go great together. You just click on one of the mixes, and start playing it — and it will go on and on and on. It’s like a great radio station

They also announced improved syncing features

& there’s even more. Another new feature announced was Home Sharing.
