Google Earth Available via AppStore

If Streetview coming in firmware 2.2 isn’t enough for you and you need something Google-made to play with grab a copy of Google Earth from the AppStore. Google sure has been busy lately.

Google Earth is a nice little bit of technology allowing you to view the world via a combination of satellite and aerial images. This port by google to the iPhone has been done quite well and it’s an entertaining little app.

Just search for a location or place on the Earth or click locate me and Google Earth takes you to the corresponding part of the world showing you pictures or 3d rendering of the area. Controls are pretty simple to use. Pinch and pull to zoom, move around with the flick of the finger, etc. It is all fairly intuitive.

A really neat feature is the ability to look at places in 3d by tilting your iPhone to vertical. Check out what Mount Everest from the comfort of your home!

What are those blue dots all over the place? When you click a blue dot you get a popup with info for that dot. It could be a place to eat or information about the location etc. For example one of the little blue dots on Mount Everest gives you a picture of that location.

This app is pretty fun to play with on the iPhone and I’m enjoying going around at looking at different places around the world. I might even find something interesting in my area that I wasn’t already aware of by clicking these blue dots.

You can also use it to search for various things in your area like places to eat or shop and Google Earth will look them up for you which is a lot more interesting than looking them up via Maps.app or phone directories — basically Google Earth on the iPhone is a combination area viewer and directory all in one super tool.

It’s a free download and you can grab it here free. Enjoy.

Apple Launches iPhone Developer Forums - No More NDA

A few weeks ago, Apple announced that it was dropping the non-disclosure agreement (NDA) for all released versions of Apple’s iPhone Software. Well, Apple has now officially released the new agreement, which removes the confidentiality clause and makes several other changes. Theoretically, this means that developers can now truly feel free to discuss the iPhone APIs, applications can be open-sourced, and more.

As previously reported, users had already started distributing free iPhone SDK App source code. The company has also announced an iPhone developer-to-developer forum, which includes its own set of agreements.

Pano(graphic) Photos On The iPhone

Snapture which brought professional camera features, Cycorder which brought video recording and apps like Qik and Flixwagon that have brought live video broadcasting have made iPhone’s camera a lot more fun to use than its very basic camera app.

Unfortunately these apps are only available for the jailbroken iPhone so they are still out of reach for iPhone users who are not technically inclined.

Till we don’t see jailbreak apps like Qik etc on the App Store which we hear could be soon, iPhone users can checkout iPhone apps like Debacle Software’s Pano for some fun. It allows you to create panoramic photos as seen below from multiple photos right on the iPhone.

iPhone App - Pano

Pano is developed by Debacle Software, a three-man operation consisting of Adam Cohen (image processing guru), Julian Lepinski (iPhone developer), and Eric Akaoka (graphic designer).

With Pano you will no longer need to use applications on your computer to merge the photos manually to create panoramic photos, you can create panoramic photos from multiple photos (up to 4) on your iPhone.

How to use Pano?

Taking panoramic photos using Pano is very simple. After you have installed Pano on your iPhone from the App Store, launch it from your iPhone’s home screen.

At this point, you are prompted to take your first photo. You start off by taking the left most photo. After taking a photo, it will prompt you to either use the photo or retake the photo.

If you choose to use the photo, it will prompt you to take the next photo. While taking the second photo, Pano gives you a reference of the first photo by overlaying the transparent version of the right-hand part of the first photo. This feature is extremely useful in aligning the photos.

You need to repeat this procedure for four photos. You can hit cancel at any point if you want to make a panoramic photo by stitching less than 4 photos.

When you are done, Pano stitches the four photos together to create a panoramic photo by performing the image blending as well as some auto color correction. The panoramic photo created is saved in iPhone’s camera roll.

Conclusion:

I really liked Pano’s simple user interface. As you can see from the photos posted on Panorama’s Flickr group, the paramoic photos that have been created using Pano look quite good.

Pano costs $2.99 and you can download it from this App Store link.

What do you think of Pano? Tell us in the comments below.
