iClassic | Bring iPod classic interface to iPhone/iPod touch

Available via the Big Boss repo in Cydia, iClassic brings the iPod classic interface down to the click wheel to your iPhone/iPod touch. You can choose whether you want a black or white iPod classic, among its customizing features. The shake to shuffle feature of some of the latest iPods is there as well. Make note though that this is not a replacement app of sorts to the iPod app already pre-installed.

I chose the black personally (goes with my actual black iPod classic).

Flash On iPhone Update

Looks like Adobe is getting increasingly restless about Apple’s lackadaisical approch towards bringing Flash to the iPhone.

Now in a seeming attempt to place the blame squarely on Apple, Adobe is taking the issue to the iPhone users themselves.

Now iPhone users trying to access Flash content on their handsets are shown this message from Adobe:

“Apple restricts use of technologies required by product like Flash Player. Until Apple eliminates these restrictions, Adobe cannot provide Flash Player for the iPhone or iPod Touch”.

It sounds like a last-ditch effort by Adobe to bring Flash to the iPhone users. Many previous attempts to talk to Apple about bringing Flash have only ended up in empty promises. This has been because Apple has always suspected the Flash player of bringing down the performance levels of the iPhone and Steve Jobs has in fact gone on air saying that he has not been particularly impressed with Adobe’s offer for the iPhone.

Recently, Adobe had launched a beta version of Flash Professional CS5 that enabled app developers to port their Flash applications to the iPhone platform. However, users looking to access Flash based web content on their iPhones have remained unlucky so far.

N64 on iPhone 3GS/iPod touch 3G?

ZodTTD is working on a port of N64 for the iPhone 3GS and the iPod touch 3G.

The port is being developed for these two models because:
- They’re the fastest Apple handhelds in term of raw CPU performance.
- They both have a faster GPU (Graphic Processing Unit) which allows for OpenGL ES 2.0 specifications.

So yes you may soon see N64 on your favorite Apple device. But I can’t promise it will run games top notch just yet, as things are too early to say. There’s hope though, with a 3D accelerated graphics plugin, as well as an ARM dynarec. If you have a previous generation device, I can use software rendering, but it will slow things down further, along with the slower CPU.

iPhone 3GS Jailbreakable After All

Several publications on Wednesday reported Apple’s latest iPhone 3GS units came with presumably jailbreak-proof firmware. The reports were half correct: The phones do indeed ship with different firmware with a new bootrom, but they are still hackable.

McDonald compared this situation with the newest iPhone 3GS devices to the second-generation iPod Touch. Apple shipped this iPod Touch with a different bootrom from the previous version, and for a while, owners who jailbroke the device needed to tether their devices in order to boot up. Later, the iPhone Dev-Team released another exploit to enable untethered booting.

The iPhone jailbreak community emerged soon after the original iPhone launched in June 2007. Hackers discovered methods to install unauthorized third-party software on the device, as well as unlock the iPhone to work with carriers that otherwise did not serve the iPhone.

Apple wasn’t pleased. At the launch of the British iPhone in September 2007, Steve Jobs said Apple would work to suppress unlock hacks.

Apple has even suggested to the U.S. Copyright Office that jailbreaking is illegal — to no avail, as the Dev-Team has been careful to only provide patches hacking the iPhone, as opposed to copying the software, according to McDonald.

“It’s a cat-and-mouse game,” Jobs said in September 2007. “We try to stay ahead. People will try to break in, and it’s our job to stop them breaking in.”

With the latest upgrade, it appears Apple has not stopped the Dev-Team from breaking in. But for the time being, the company has made hacking new iPhones very inconvenient and perhaps impractical.

Apple Developing Radio App for iPhone/iPod touch?

Apple may be developing a Radio app for the iPhone and iPod touch, according to 9to5Mac.

The application is said to run in the background like the iPod app and be very similar to the FM radio in the new iPod nanos. It could even be incorporated into the iPod app.

The holdup on this app is apparently the integration of iTunes with the program. When listening to the radio you will be able to easily purchase the song using the Mobile iTunes Store.

9to5Mac also hypothesis that the app will likely have the same Live Pause functionality that the Nanos currently enjoy.

Both the Broadcom BCM4325 chip in the iPhone 3GS and the Broadcom BCM4329FKUBG chip in the new iPod touch support FM.

Blackra1n Released

GeoHot has released his BlackRa1n jailbreak for Windows users only.

BlackRa1n should work on all devices using OS 3.0 and up. Please note that the new iPod touch requires a tethered jailbreak. Meaning, if you let the battery die you will need to use BlackRa1n to boot it again.

Also, its important to note that BlackRa1n does not hactivate your iPhone. This means that you must be using an official Apple carrier for activation purposes.

No word yet on a Mac version.

You can download the jailbreak utility from here.
