O2 To Allow iPhone Unlocking

O2 will allow customers to unlock their iPhones once Orange begins selling the iPhone on November 10th.

Matthew Key, head of O2, told Times Online, “Once the iPhone becomes available on other UK networks, we will allow O2 customers to unlock their iPhones, although of course they will still need to honour any outstanding contract period they have. At the end of their contract period, they are entirely free to move to another operator — though naturally we hope they won’t want to! “

When asked why O2’s 3G network was struggling, Key made these comments.

“The O2 network has seen an 18-fold increase in data carried over the network in the last year and traffic continues to double every three months…”

…”We are investing more than £30 million to address capacity issues in London alone between now and Christmas and I’m confident that we’ll see much improved levels of service as a result.”

Apple iPhone Firmware 2.2.1 Now Available - Don’t update yet if you are unlocked/jailbreaked

Apple has released iPhone Firmware 2.2.1 (Build 5H11 - Modem Firmware 02.30.03) today. The update is available from iTunes, no word yet if PWNAGE and QuickPWN work, they probably don’t, and we are not sure about yellowsn0w for the 3G either, so do yourself a favor and don’t update just yet. The iPhone 2.2.1 Software Update includes:

- Improved general stability of Safari
- Fixed issue where some images saved from Mail do not display correctly in the Camera Roll

The iPhone Dev Team explain how they Hack the iPhone - Video

iPhone 3G Hardware Unlocked by TA_Mobile

Tuan Anh Do shows off an unlocked iPhone 3G at one of his cell phone repair shops in Hanoi. (Credit: Dong Ngo/CBS Interactive)

Tuan Anh aka TA_Mobile, Vietnamese cell shop owner and iPhone hacker, has maanged to unlock the iPhone 3G via a crazy hardware hack that involved removing the motherboard from the iPhone 3G, removing the BaseBand Chip (SGOLD) and re-flashing it and then re-fitting it to the motherboard.

TA_Mobile if you remember was the first to extract the 5.8 bootloader form the iPhone 3G via a hardware method, and has now once again proven his hardware skills. This unlocking method is really not for the faint of heart and probably no one but the TA_Mobile shops will be preforming this hack for sometime. It will set you back $80 USD, not much for most of us, but a small fortune for those in Vietnam.

  2. Then, with MobileTerminal installed (via Cydia), type in su and hit enter.
  3. at the prompt, type in alpine and hit enter
  4. Type in cd /System/Library/”Carrier Bundles” and hit enter
  5. Type in ln -s Digicel_TT.bundle 374130 and hit enter
  6. Type in ln -s bmobile_TT.bundle 37412 and hit enter.
  7. When you’ve done that, navigate to your Settings > General > Reset > ResetNetwork Settings
  8. When the phone restarts, you’ll see a screen like this in the ‘Phone Preferences:

Bmobile Services Menu

Digicel Services Menu

Digicel Serices

For iPhone 3G users, because the iPhone 3G does not have a software unlock as yet, the baseband is unable to read the MCC and MTN numbers from the SIM cards. Therefore, even if you try to create symlinks to the MCC information, the iPhone 3G still will not generate those lovely screens like the silver and black (2G) iPhone owners get. However, all you have to do it replace the Unknown.bunble bundle in /System/Library/Carrier Bundles with the ones below.

Digicel-Unknown.bundle.zip
bmobile-Unknown.bundle.zip

iAccidentally Updated To 2.2, Now What?

Image representing iPhone 3G as depicted in Cr...

One of the most common problems after Apple releases its the latest firmware update for the iPhone is that some users who have jailbroken their iPhone end up accidentally upgrading it.

So when Apple released iPhone firmware 2.2 on Thursday night, quite a few readers ended up accidentally upgrading their iPhones to the latest firmware.

The problem is that they ended up losing the jailbreak and all the unofficial iPhone apps. They are left with two options: 1. Either wait for the iPhone Dev Team to release the latest hacking tools which should be soon or 2. Downgrade to iPhone firmware 2.1.

One of our readers, Jason, has tried the second option and successfully downgraded his iPhone to iPhone firmware 2.1. Jason has also shared the steps he had followed to downgrade to iPhone firmware 2.1, so we have based this step-by-step guide mostly on it.

Before we start with the guide, you need to first download iPhone firmware 2.1 (for 1st iPhone, use this download link and for iPhone 3G, use this download link).

You can then follow these steps to downgrade from iPhone firmware 2.2 to firmware 2.1:

  • Connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC and select your iPhone from the list of devices in iTunes. If things had gone horribly wrong while hacking your iPhone and iTunes does not detect your iPhone then you will need to put it in DFU (Device Firmware Upgrade) mode.
    • You can follow these steps to put your iPhone in DFU mode (this is required only if iTunes does not recognize your iPhone):
      • Connect your iPhone to your computer.
      • Turn iPhone off.
      • Hold power and home together for 10 seconds (exactly).
      • Release power but keep holding home until the computers beeps (observed on a PC) as a USB device is recognized.
      • A few seconds later iTunes should detect your iPhone.
  • In the Summary Tab, Hold down Option and press the “Restore” button. If you are using Windows hold down Shift and press the Restore button. (This is an important step as just pressing the “Restore” button will result in restoring your iPhone with the latest firmware which is firmware 2.2 currently, by holding down Option in case of Mac or Shift in case of Windows, allows you choose the firmware file that you want to downgrade to.)
  • Restore or Revirginize iPhone

  • You should be able to see all the older iPhone firmware files you had downloaded so far, select iPhone firmware 2.1 file (iPhone1,1_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw) to restore your iPhone or browse to the folder where you have downloaded it and select it.
  • You might get the any of the following errors: 1011, 1013, 1015, you can ignore them. However, if you get errors such as: 1601, 1602, 1600 or anything else then try putting the iPhone into DFU mode and try again.

We haven’t tried this yet on the iPhone 3G as we haven’t upgraded to iPhone firmware 2.2 after the warning from the iPhone Dev Team but have tried this out on an iPod Touch (after upgrading it to iPhone firmware 2.2) and it works without any problem. James who had tipped us about this method has tried this out and confirms that it works.

Based on the information that iPhone Dev team had shared about firmware 2.2, we are assuming that this does not downgrade the baseband firmware in case of iPhone 3G which also gets upgraded with the iPhone firmware 2.2 update. So we are not sure if iPhone 3G users who accidentally upgraded to iPhone firmware 2.2 will be able to unlock their iPhones when iPhone Dev Team release their software method to unlock iPhone 3G.

But by downgrading to iPhone firmware 2.1 they should be able to at least jailbreak their iPhone 3G so they can install the unofficial iPhone apps (which was the condition when they upgrade to the latest firmware).

In case of the 1st gen iPhone, since the baseband firmware does not get upgraded, by downgrading to iPhone firmware 2.1, 1st gen iPhone users should be able to jailbreak and unlock their iPhones.

Please remember that hacking your iPhone could result in voiding your warranty so please proceed with caution.

iPhone Firmware 2.2 Disables Sim Proxy Hacks for 3G - No Hardware Unlock for 2.2

TurboSIM

Apple seems to be getting back into the cat and mouse games again with the latest iPhone update. Firmware 2.2, released only a few hours ago, seems to be disabling Sim Proxy/Hacks like TurboSim, VirginSim etc..

Since the 3G came out Sim Proxy/Hacks have had some limited success in allowing users to use their 3G iPhones on any carrier. I had reported in the past that these Sim Hacks work, albeit for a limited time, but some didn’t work at all.

This is jsut a warning to anyone using the iPhone 3G with one of these Sim Hacks  NOT to update until there is a clear sign that the Sim Proxy/hack of your choice is working. The Dev Team, myself and others have always said that this was unreliable run around to a software unlock and it’s days were numbered. Now we’ll see if these hardware hacks days are over, once and for all.
