ihazsupper.com - iPhone Dev Team post a controversial last supper

What do you see here? The Woz and his disciples? Some may find it offensive, some may find it funny, but who ever did this spent some time thinking it out and hiding some subliminal messages behind this piece of photoshop art.

I don’t really know what to make of it.

It’s the classic Last Supper scene (not sure on the original artist painting that was used - let me know if you do) but clearly shows the Woz as the big guy and the Dev Team as his disciples, (not seeing Steve in there anywhere in the picture), GeoHot is Judas maybe with his Google Shirt on and the body of Christ is the iPhone.

I personally think that this is a play at yiphone and GeoHot and was probably submitted to the Dev’s by a artistic fan. The image can be found on http://www.ihazsupper.com/ along with a countdown timer like that found on yiphone.org - LMAO - this is getting ridiculous. Coincidentally the Dev-Team’s counter reaches zero 1 second before Yiphone’s counter.

This is truly a twist on modern interpretive art, where the observer will definitely feel some sort of emotion looking at it, you will either hate it or love it, you may find a message or see things that are not there. Imagine if the Woz was a member of the Dev Team - haha - you see what I mean? Wheres Geo’s halo?

What do you see in the image? Do you find it offensive?
Let me know what you think it means.

Installer 4.0 News for iPhone 2.0 and 3G - Faster, Smarter

The new iPhone and iPod Touch firmware 2.0 brought allot of new features and improvements. One of the being the AppStore. It’s a marvelous place, it already has over 800 apps listed and Apple has re-opened it’s doors to developers so we can expect hundreds of more to flood the AppStore soon.

Apple sold over one million iPhone 3G’s over the weekend it was launched and iPhone and iPod Touch users running firmware 2.0 have downloaded over ten million apps from the AppStore. Those are amazing numbers considering that it has not even been a week since the iPhone 3G and 2.0 with the AppStore have been available.

But what about Installer, the old HackStore? As we know Apple is certainly not going to let apps like Kate, Intelliscreen, OpenSSH, Terminal, MobileFinder and others run on the iPhone or be sold on the AppStore, so we need out resource to get out apps.

Unfortunately, it was discovered early on with the iPhone 2.0 Betas that the old Installer wasn’t going to work, and like any old faithful, she needed a little restoration and modifying to work smoothly on the new 2.0 firmware. What better time than now to put a fresh new look on Installer and modify it to be faster and more user friendly, and of course also work on iPhone and iPod Touch firmware 2.0.

Rip-Dev teamed up with Nullriver a few months ago to give a much needed update to Installer. They added a much needed Search feature, single repo refreshing, soft rebooting installs updates and springboard uninstalls. All very needed features, but installer still had a couple major problems, it was sometimes very slow to open and refresh apps and apps were sometimes not clearly identified as to which firmwares they were compatible with.

Installer 3.1 Update tried to make the start up and refreshing times faster by changing from the plain XML (.xml repo files) to a binary format property list files (.plist repo files) - the .plist format takes up less space on your iPhone and loads and saves faster. But still this was an improvement, but not a solution.

“The new repository format solves both issues. First, it downloads much more compact packages listing from the server, resulting in over than 3 times less bandwidth. And second, the script behind the repository is smart enough to filter the packages based on the firmware version you’re using and only give you the packages that can be installed there. Nice, isn’t it?”

Installer 4 uses sqlite database for all it’s indexing and searching, the entire index is not loaded in iPhones Memory (RAM) and is only accessed on demand (if you are on 1.1.4, you’ll only download 1.1.4 apps for example). Starting up Installer should be significantly faster and the user experience should be better.

The new installer will come out immediately following the release of the PWNAGE Tool jailbreak for 2.0 from the Dev Team, but a hint of when that may be is seen here:

“And to answer a common question, we’re getting there with the release - tomorrow the Installer may hit the private beta, depending on how well the work progresses.”

hmmm…

Update from the devloper:

A few new added features that I think we all would really appreciate:

First, we have added dependencies. This means that if a particular package requires, say, Jiggy Runtime, when you try to install it, the Jiggy Runtime will be installed too (if available). If it is not available, tough luck, you will not be able to install the package - but this is for your own safety. We really don’t want to support the mess on your iPhone (or iPod touch) so Installer will make sure you got everything installed correctly.

And second,  the Installer is fully multithreaded now. Which means, sources refresh, package installation can now go in parallel (and in the background), so you don’t have to stare down that progress bar at the bottom of the screen). Moreover, you can now cancel any of the tasks.

Both of these are features that I personally have always missed, I only hope that before it installs an app because the one you select depends on it, it atleast prompts you, so you can avoid app clashes.

Broken iBoot - Dev Team Exposes iPhone BIOS of sorts in new Video

No Drama, No $$, Safe Tools

The iPhone Dev Team has certainly been under allot of pressure and I have certainly had enough about posting updates and new videos, but this one I think would appeal to the more tech amongst us, but it means allot to all of us who want a jailbreaked, activated and in some/most cases an unlocked iPhone OS.

The Dev’s proposed a comment driven vote on their blog. All those in favor of the release of a video that showcases the heart of the beast. The iPhones 3G’s “BIOS” of sorts as the Dev’s put it.

In geohot’s famous words:
“IT GIVES YOU A FULL INTERACTIVE SHELL
I REPEAT, A FULL INTERACTIVE SHELL”

And the I’s had it. 800+ votes later and the Dev’s have decided that’s enough people for them to reveal just enough to hopefully satisfy the disbelieving.

The Broken iBoot. (please read)

“Pwnage breaks the chain of trust from the very earliest boot stage, and as the video shows, this chain has now been broken on the iPhone 3G. Given that the only thing lower than this is ROM, Apple will have to change the hardware to prevent us from getting in, and we don’t expect them to ask for your phone back so they can “fix” it.

IF the video below wasn’t enough, the Dev’s blatantly state that we are in, and in for good. There should be nothing but good times and at least jailbreaked iPhones from now on. Once the Dev’s can get in at that level, the possibility of an unlock becomes almost certainly possible.

Talking to iBoot? from iphonedev on Vimeo.

This means that the Dev Team have gotten write access on the same level that Apples Software aka iTunes. - If it’s bound by hardware limitations and only an upgrade to hardware can resolve this for Apple, WOW. Remember a story of millions iPhones, uhum I mean “Electric Computers” Apple ordered?

Authorized Unlocked iPhone 3G from Italy and Hong Kong? - Looks so

I have been following the iPhone 3G in Europe closely because of the the laws concerning locking a cellular phone to one mobile carrier. It seems that the lucky Italians (and buyers in Hong Kong are confirming this as well) can purchase the iPhone 3G that is authorized to be unlocked upon activation. ion Italy the cost is €499 (have a look here), or about for about $775 USD (or about $4,900 TTD), The 16 GB is €569  - WOW

According to this thred on Hackint0sh a user named Ma5ter says:

“Yep, I can confirm. 11.07 I bought iPhone in Italy at central TIM store and I’m from Croatia. Only for the first time I had to activate phone with TIM card (through iTunes), what I got in package, and after that all Croatian SIM card works. Yes you can change APN.
Go for it.”

UPDATE: Buyers in Hong Kong are also saying that any sim card can be used once you have activated the iPhone with the 3 Sim card. BUT you are still signed to a 24 month contract, even though you can use the phones anywhere in the world, so this only really benefits the original owner/buyer who’s name is on the contract unless you manage to buy one off an Italian of Hong Kong dude that forgets to transfer the contract payments to you ;).

hkbeejay writes:

“Confirmed. I am one of the 500 and am holding one that is unlocked. I was also advised by my account manager that all iPhones 3G sold by “3″ are unlocked.

Don’t forget, however, that when you buy the phone you will also have to commit to 24 months contract signed before they let you have the phone.”

Apple StoreBut This means that you or someone can walk into TIM Italy or 3 Hong Kong, and purchase a iPhone 3G that is authorized to work on any carrier network, aka unlocked (without contract), activate it with the provided sim card, then toss out the TIM or 3 sim card that came with the iPhoen 3G (wait - you should probably keep it in case you need it to activate or upgrade in the future) - pop in your sim card and presto have a working iPhone 3G - with a 24 month contract. If there is a way to get out of the contract then it may really be worth something. But with the price that high already, adding a early contract termination fee, may send the price upwards of $1000 USD from the carrier. Ouch.

If someone is willing to send me an iPhone 3G that is authorized to be unlocked I would love to test it with my local Bmobile sim card :) A quick look around on eBay reveals that people in these countries are already buying these unlocked iPhone 3G’s and selling them for over $1000 USD - wow - BUT that’s good considering what the iPhone 3G would probably go for PWNED unlocked (and comparable to what first gen unlocked iPhones went for a year ago). - But what about the Contract with the original carrier, can you pay an early termination fee?

A closer look on Apples website revealed some interesting info (as well as confirms TIM and Vodafone Italy, as well as 3 in Hong Kong -  iPhone 3G’s are officially listed as NOT “Locked to carrier” according to Apples website) It also shows which countries you can possibly get an iPhone 3G authorized for unlocking, Switzerland maybe? Apples notes that customers should “Contact carrier for authorized unlocking” in the following countries:

  1. France
  2. Switzerland
  3. Austria
  4. Spain
  5. Autralia
  6. Portugal
  7. Norway

So how do you know if you are being scammed when purchasing a iPhone 3G that has been Authorized to be unlocked? Easily, it will have one of the following model numbers if its from Italy: MB489T/A, MB496T/A, MB500T/A as per Apples website.

My older brother, who I miss allot, lives in Switzerland. I will give him a call and ask him to contact Swisscom and ask them if he can buy an Authorized Unlocked iPhone 3G. If he can, I’ll let you know. Maybe Zibri will start selling Authorized Unlocked iPhone 3G’s instead of trying to recompile ZiPhone for 2.0 and 3G Baseband or keep up with the big boys, as he seems so pissed off with the whole iPhone community. Ok maybe not :P

With Apple and supporting Carriers keeping a tight leash on activating the iPhone 3G, maybe these countries may offer a real solution for those wanting an iPhone 3G that is truely unlocked and authorized by Apple and that you would be able to update and use freely, the way it should be in a perfect world.
