Briefcase File Transfer Software

Briefcase File Transfer Software for iPhone is said to be the first truly iPhone-centric file transfer software available.

Quickly download any type of file or directory to your iPhone. View your files or upload them to a friend’s iPhone. Briefcase makes transferring files completely painless. It requires no cables, no client software, no switching back and forth between the iPhone and Mac, no network setup, and no typing in of an IP address every time you want to download or upload a file.

Features:
- Connect: Connect to and browse computers (and iPhones running Briefcase or Briefcase Lite) on a local network, as well as remote machines with their own internet address. In addition to Macs and iPhones you can connect to any machines supporting SSH.
- Download Files: Securely download any type of file or directory. (Note: for security reasons downloading of files from other iPhones is not supported)
- View Files: View your Pages, Numbers, Keynote, Word, Excel, MP3, M4V, and PDF files… and more
- Upload Files:Securely upload files stored in Briefcase to another Mac or iPhone. When transferring files to a Mac you can perform functions specific to the file type: set an image file as a desktop background or add it to iPhoto, for example.

Intels New Mobile Internet Device

On Monday, Intel presented a prototype handheld device running Moorestown, its upcoming Mobile Internet Device (MID) platform that is designed to enable a new generation of ultra-thin, touchscreen devices with extensive battery life.

When Moorestown arrives sometime in the 2009-2010 time, it will introduce a more than tenfold reduction in idle power consumption when compared to Intel’s first-generation MIDs based on the Intel Atom processor. Intel is targeting Moorestown at the smartphone manufacturers. The platform will support a range of wireless technologies including 3G, WiMAX, WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth and mobile TV. Intel is collaborating with both Ericsson and Option on new 3G HSPA data modules that will come in 25×30x2.x mm small size and provide an “always connected” Internet-based experience.

In the videos below, the Intel exec can bee seen demonstrating the first working Moorestown-based handheld, which Engadget claims is “little more than a validation board running fresh from the factory, three-dayold Moorestown silicon in an Intel lab.” A similar device had been flaunted by the chipmaker in recent years, though those versions are said to have been non-functional mockups.

At one point, it was reported that Apple would embrace Intel’s MID platform as the foundation for its own next-generation mobile Internet device, sometimes referred to as a next-generation Newton handheld or Internet tablet. However, the company’s recent acquisition of chip designer PA Semi to build proprietary ARM chips for iPhones and iPods may signal a change of direction on the part of the electronics maker.

iGPS360 Module for iPhone, iPod

The iGPS360 module is a state-of-the-art GPS module that brings GPS capability to the iPhone and iPod Touch.

- The module is designed as a direct plug-in for your iPhone (both first generation and 3G) and iPod Touch (the module will not work on other iPod platforms or Apple devices). We also expect the module to work on the second generation iPod Touch once it has been jailbroken.

- The module has on-board battery back-up which will store the last acquired GPS satellite information on-board, enabling a fast GPS-lock re-acquisition time after the module has temporarily been switched off. For optimum on-board battery life and performance, it is advised that before first use of the module, you charge your iPhone/iPod Touch through the GPS module with the included USB cable for at least 16 hours. This will ensure that the battery inside of the GPS module is fully charged before first use. Overnight charging of your iPhone/iPod Touch through the GPS module should be done at least once a week in order to maintain last satellite data and user settings.

- The module is A-GPS enabled, meaning that satellite ephemeris/almanac data can optionally be uploaded to the module before you leave home. This A-GPS data enables the module to achieve an even faster cold-start GPS-lock
- The module features a low current
- The module ships with a 6ft micro-USB cable (USB-A to micro USB-B) which will allow you to charge and sync your iPhone/iPod Touch while the GPS module is plugged in (either at home or on the road).

- A smart keychain is currently in development that will extend the functionality of the iGPS360 module in such a way that the module can also be used on any laptop or desktop computer that has a USB port. The keychain will also allow for easy and safe storage of the iGPS360 module on your keychain when not in use. The keychain will be sold separately.

The module costs $75.00 and can be pre-ordered from Orange Gadgets at this link

iPhone Dev-Team Makes Progress on 3G Unlock

The iPhone Dev-Team has made some significant progress on a 3G unlock this week.

Here’s a screenshot of a 3G iPhone whose baseband has been modified. And even though it’s modified — and fails the integrity check — it’s still running.

“Running modified baseband code is a very useful ability, but it’s still not possible to accurately estimate how close we are to the ultimate goal.”

Firemail Brings Landscape Mode to iPhone’s Mail App for Free

We had seen not one but four iPhone apps released last week which made it possible to compose and reply to email messages in either portrait or landscape mode on the iPhone to address one of the limitations of iPhone’s Mail app as it does not support landscape mode.

However, the price iPhone users had to pay for this feature ranged from $0.99 (for TouchType, Wide Email, Compose) to $1.99 (for Side Ways).

Conceited Software has recently released Firemail which brings the landscape mode to iPhone’s Mail app for free.

Firemail allows iPhone users to compose and reply to email messages in landscape mode. It also allows you to save email messages within the app (mimicking the save as draft functionality).

When you launch Firemail from the home screen, you get the compose screen in the landscape mode where you can type the Subject and the body of the message.

Writing emails with Firemail is so fast with its landscape keyboard and snippet pasting features!

To compose a new message; all you need to do is write the subject and body of your message and hit the button on the bottom left hand corner. Here you get options: “Send to MobileMail”, “Save to Bookmarks” and “Cancel”. If you select “Send to MobileMail”, it opens and auto-populates iPhone’s Mail app. If you select “Save to Bookmarks” it results in saving the text of the email message.

If you want to use the email message that you had saved as bookmark, you can click on the bookmark button at bottom center and select the message from the list of bookmarks. After you select the bookmarked message, you will get options to “Insert”, “Delete” and “Cancel”, selecting “Insert” will result in the text getting inserted in the compose screen. The “Save to Bookmarks” would have been neat feature but the current implementation is not scalable (as only last 4 bookmarks are visible on the screen).

To reply to an email, you need to open an email in iPhone’s Mail app and hit reply. Then hit the home button and launch Firemail. Here you can type the body of the message and hit the button on the bottom left hand corner where you will be prompted to similar options to composing an email message, however this time selecting “Send to MobileMail”, will result in turn would open and auto-pupulate the message that you wanted to reply.

As I have mentioned before, apps like Firemail are definitely not the ideal solution and I would expect Apple to add landscape mode to iPhone’s mail app sometime in the future, till then Conceited Software’s Firemail is a good alternative if prefer to type your email messages in landscape vs. portrait mode and its a no-brainer as it is available for free as compared to other iPhone apps on the App Store.

You can download Firemail from the App Store using this link.
