Apple is having a big event on Tuesday September 9th that is not one to be missed. The stars of the show are a new line of iPods and iPod Touch’s in various shapes, sizes and capacities. The other stars of the event will be the new iTunes 8 and hopefully iPhone/Touch firmware 2.1

Rumors are going wild, but they all seem to be all pointing at some great new features for iTunes 8 such as the new Genius feature (suggesting playlists/artists based on what you are listening to), Genius Sidebar, Grid view (like AppleTv), and trippy visuals caught from Steve Job’s flash backs from the 60’s and 70’s.

What I would like to know is if iTunes 8 will work with PWNAGE? - Because another rumored update is going to be iPhone/iTouch Firmware 2.1, and I am guessing that you must have iTunes 8 to upgrade to 2.1.

Apple has managed to do a great job this time at not leaking the new features of 2.1 firmware. We can make a good guess that it will include push/pull technology for Apps to run in the background. But what else?

I am thinking we should look back at some of the patents that were submitted by Apple before firmware 2.0 and the iPhone 3G were revealed. Below is a list of the new features that I think that Apple will introduce with firmware 2.1 for the iPhone and iPod Touch

  1. iTunes Remote Streaming
  2. Push for background Apps
  3. GPS Native App (turn by turn)
  4. Video and improved camera App
  5. Copy & Paste
  6. Native Chat (iChat)

iChat, first thing you think of is obviously video chat, well there is no camera on the front of the iPhone 3G (nor 2G) but Apple did submit this earlier this year when it patented the iPhone 3G and firmware 2.0.

“…In some embodiments, an optical sensor is located on the front of the device so that the user’s image may be obtained for videoconferencing while the user views the other video conference participants on the touch screen display…

But see that the optical sensors in the iPhone 3G don’t seem to have any image capture capabilities I think we can rule video conferencing out, for now.

The event os carded for Tuesday 9th September, I be sure to post where you can get either live audio, video or blogcast.
