The 01 Phone - iPhone Killer? Maybe - Real? Who Knows.

According to T3 this photo is the new ‘iPhone Killer”. If this ‘The 01 Phone’ turns out to be real, it will have some pretty impressive features

  • 5.0 megapixel camera
  • 3G internet
  • 32 GB of storage

But forget those for now, the most impressive thing is the laser projected keyboard from the slide out part of the device.

It looks as though the slide-out part of the handset actually conceals a laser keyboard, which projects a full qwerty onto the flat surface below. Play/pause, rewind and forward buttons suggest the 01 will be a multimedia stunner, with quality-looking in-ear headphones thrown in for good measure.

A full touch-screen obviously makes it resemble the iPhone, but by the looks of things, it has a forward-facing camera for video-calling, as opposed to the iPhone’s back-facing camera. We presume it has a second camera on the back, as with a 5.0-megapixel sensor, some serious photos could be taken with this handset.

I think if this was real. there would be some actual product shots and videos leaking around. Impressive as this looks, I am not holding my breath until ~ September 20th when the counter on the the01Phone.com website will stop.

iPhone Camera Mod - Macro Focus

I came across a really cool hardware mod over on iClarified.com. Daniel Forsythe modded his iPhone Camera by removing the glue that hold the lens in focus so he could use it to read bar codes that he shoots from magazines and equipment labels.

The mod involves breaking the glue that holds in the camera module and rotating the lens to bring the focus closer to the camera. With this hack, he can snap photos of close-in subjects. Check out his Flickr photo set for samples and discussion.

As soon as I saw this i reached into a drawer I have (referred to as the iPhone Graveyard) and whipped out a camera component from an opened iPhone. I was able to remove the glue easily with a sharp artist knife (exacto blade).

I will be putting it into a phone I am about to try and fix the sound on (stuck in headphones mode after a nasty fall). So I’ll snap some shots with it to test then.. But check out Daniels Flikr Gallery, its quite impressive.

iPhone Password Lock Useless with firmware 2.0.2

It seems that an easy trick has been found to get around the iPhone Password Lock (4 digit password on your lock screen) in firmware 2.0.2. This is terrible news for anyone interested in keeping data private or at least stop someone who finds/steals your iPhone from being able to use it.

First, password protect your phone and lock it. Then slide to unlock and do this:

1. Tap emergency call.
2. Double tap the home button.

Done. You are now in your favorites. This seems like a feature, because you may want to have emergency number in your favorites for quick dial. The security problem here is double. The first: anyone picking up your phone can make a call to anyone in your favorites. On top of that, this also opens access to your full Address Book, the dial keypad, and your voice mail.

If that wasn’t bad enough, the second one is even worse: if you tap on the blue arrows next to the names, it will give you full access to the private information in a favorite entry. And it goes downhill from there:

• If you click in a mail address, it will give you full access to the Mail application. All your mail will be exposed.
• If there’s a URL in your contact (or in a mail message) you can click on it and have full access to Safari.
• If you click on send text message in a contact, it will give you full access to all your SMS.

Hopefully, this major security break that fully exposes your most private information will be solved as soon as possible. Until then, you can avoid any potential breach doing the following:

1. In the iPhone home, go to Settings.
2. Click on General.
3. Click on Home Button.
4. Click on either “Home” or “iPod”

This way, the double-click on the home button will take the user back to the unlock screen (if you use “Home”) or the iPod screen. I recommend using Home. You will lose the ability to quickly access your favorites for a quick call—which is one of my favorite features—but that’s better than having all your private mails, contacts, and SMS database compromised. XiPhone from iUnlocked first Screenshots - New GUI for XPWN

iUnlocked.org announced that they have been working hard at creating a interface around the Open Source XPWN Code released by the Dev Team a few weeks ago. XiPhone will be allow the user to create a custom firmware that is jailbreaked, activated and bundled with BootNeuter (to unlock 2G iPhones), Cydia and/or Installer. The developers are currently looking for some feedback from users so make sure to zip over to iUnlocked.org and let them know what you think.

Features:

  • Auto downloading of stock firmware files from apple’s site (no need to hunt for it then select it)*
  • Wizard based modern GUI (created with .net 2.0), and Vista Style UI.
  • Export of firmware settings so users can pass around an XML file which contains a configuration that works for them.
  • Auto updates to the XiPhone software.
  • Community based wallpapers used for Bootscreen, Restore screen and others
  • Enabling / Disabling of options available based on the device you select.

* is that legal?

iPhone UPDATE: New Windows QuickPwn Release Candidate (RC3)

The iPhone Dev Team have just released a new QuickPWN for Windows Users.

UPDATE: New Windows QuickPwn Release Candidate (RC3)

We have also encountered some issues with the Windows Beta of QuickPwn, and we have an update that should fix the issues seen with 64-bit Windows versions and should be able to be used with all versions of Windows, but as with all beta software other bugs may be present.

This is the second update to both QuicPWN and PWNAGE Tool in the last 24hrs. Lets hope this is the last.
