I have been getting a couple people asking me if to upgrade to 2.0.1 or if to wait, and I found a couple really useful articles/guides that answer allot of the questions on everyone’s minds. 2.0.1 seems to have fixed the slowness of some of the apps in 2.0 on both the iPhone 3G and first gen iPhones, but some users have gotten errors while updating.

Hopefully this article will help you answer any questions and/or solve/avoid any problems encountered if you choose to or have upgraded to 2.0.1

Update: I am also seeing users on Apple’s Discussion Forums mentioning allot of problems and errors as well. If this article cant help you, maybe you can head over there and see if you can get some answers, they may frown on you for jailbreaking and unlocking, but if you structure your question right, they will never know and will be very glad to help.

Updating to 2.0.1 FAQ

Can I update to 2.0.1 with pwned iPhone?
If you pwned your iPhone with a custom 2.0 and have 04.05.04 as baseband, go ahead and update using iTunes, you can do this safely, just Cydia and all unofficial apps will be removed, but everything will be working OK.

Can I update a 1.1.4 with pwned iPhone?
No. You have to be first on pwned 2.0 to be able to update without losing the activation/unlock.

Can I restore to 2.0.1
No. DO NOT restore to 2.0.1 if you are not on an official carrier, doing this will result on an unactivated iPhone until the 2.0.1 jailbreak comes out, or until you return to 2.0.

Can I return to 2.0 if I updated/restored to 2.0.1
Yes, just restore again to your custom 2.0 firmware, as baseband remains the same, it will be ok. If you get stuck in recovery mode after an error 6 use iLiberty or some other app to bump the iPhone out.

Is 2.0.1 going to update the baseband?
Depending. If you are updating/restoring from 1.1.4, yes it will update to 04.05.04. If you are updating/restoring from 2.0, no, the baseband will stay the same, this is where the update applies for unlocked iPhones.

Can I install Cydia again in 2.0.1?
You’ll have to wait until the jailbreak comes, this would mean an update to the current pwnage tool.

Is my data going to be erased?
No, it won’t be erased, there were some isolated issues where the multimedia content disappeared, but this was fixed erasing the iPhone from the general menu, and syncing it again

Even though those with PWNED/Unlocked iPhones can update (not restore) and continue using their iPhones without Cydia, I would wait, this is especially true for those of you (us) with iPhone 3G’s as the Dev Team have warned that this may interfere with a future software unlock.

Here is what the Dev Team had to say about upgrading

To update or not to update?

  • If you own a first generation (2G iPhone), no matter what you do now, you don’t have to worry, the next PwnageTool will get you where you want even if it you prematurely updated. 2G is completely pwned at every conceivable level and you’ll always be OK.  But if you own a 3G iPhone and are looking for unlock in the near future, don’t use Apple’s update yet!
  • If your 3G iPhone is on a regular contract and you always plan to be with the carrier then you can update but you will lose the jailbreak and access to third party (non AppStore) applications.
  • If your 3G iPhone is not on a regular contract and you plan to use it on an alternative network to the carrier that supplied it then do not update unless you do it with the impending PwnageTool update.
  • PwnageTool v2.0.1 does not work with version 2.0.1 of the iPhone or iPod update from Apple.
  • We will release an update to PwnageTool when the testing has been completed and all applied changes have been checked for safety.

Errors Updating in iTunes
from iPhoneAtlas

DO NOT UPDATE TO 2.0.1 IN AIRPLANE MODE!

If you do you will get the following errors: “Information for activation cannot be obtained from the iPhone”, “iTunes could not update the carrier settings on your iPhone” or “iTunes could not update the carrier settings on your iPhone. An unknown error occurred (OxE80000001).”. you probably had Airplane mode on for some reason, you can switch it off from the emergency screen. You will need to do a Restore from iTunes to recover from that. Unlike an Update, a Restore will wipe your iPhone clean of all call records, contacts, sms and more, you’ll need to activate in iTunes and sync all your contacts etc over

If you have an authorized unlocked iPhone 3G and have decided to upgrade to 2.0.1 and are receiving a “0xE8000001″ error message in iTunes, your only solution is to restore your device in iTunes. Unlike an Update, a Restore will wipe your iPhone clean of all call records, contacts, sms and more, you’ll need to activate in iTunes and sync all your contacts etc over.

If all else fails, you can put you iPhone into Recovery mode or even DFU mode, and try the restore again. For now I am jsut going to stay on 2.0 on my first gen iPhone. My 3G isn’t even jailbreaked yet, and I am patiently waiting for an unlock for it form the dev’s.
