Unlock iPhone with custom 2.0 ipsw and DFU restore in iTunes - No software needed

By Aaron Besson at 22 July, 2008, 12:54 pm

As if using the new PWNAGE Tool from the Dev Team wasn’t easy enough, its now easier than ever before to PWN and Unlock your iPhone or jailbreak your Ipod Touch or iPhone 3G.

It’s Simple

Put any un-PNWED iPhone or iPod Touch into DFU mode and restore it with a custom 2.0 Firmware created with PWNAGE Tool 2.0 on a Mac,  and restore it using iTunes 7.7.

Users are saying that this is working on everything from 1.1.1 virgin iPhones to 1.1.4’s OTB and previously unlocked with almost every unlocking method.

To get your iPhone/Touch into DFU, start by turning off the device and then turning it back on. Quickly hold down power and home for ~10 seconds - the screen will go blank - then let go power only and keep holding the home button until itunes pompts you to restore the device. Then and simply hond down shift/alt on your keyboard and click restore, find the custom 2.0 iphone/touch ipsw, and restore it.

If it’s an iPhone, make sure you allow Bootneuter to do it’s thing - DO NOT TURN YOUR iPHONE OFF OR RESET IT -  if it’s the first time you are doing this.

That’s it. You don’t need to install any other software, you don’t need to create any custom firmware yourself (but if you do at least you know what’s in there). You can simply get a PWNED 2.0 Firmware ipsw from a friend or torrent and try it out.

Couple things to check before attempting

  • Make sure you are using the right ipsw (iPhone, Ipod Touch or iPhone 3G)
    - Check my downloads page for the differences in the name of the original ipsw (these are not pwned)
  • Using a first gen iPhone custom 2.0 restore ipsw on a iPhone 3G will not unlock or work
    - (you will probably get an error and it will not even start and vice versa)
  • This will only jailbreak iPhone 3G’s (no unlock yet)
  • This will only Jailbreak iPod Touch’s obviously (don’t mix up the iphone and ipod ipsw’s)

Here is a useful thread on Hackint0sh discussing the method further and users results and findings, check it out. If you are looking to PWN your iPhone, iPod touch or iPhone 3G, and are unsure about messing the new PWNAGE Tool or don’t have access to a Mac, this way may be for you!

For those who are having difficulty going to DFU mode, try iLiberty which would do it for you automatically

Hmm, took like 30 minutes from DFU mode. Restored using custom 3g firmware. Finished, and nothing. No Bootneuter no nothing.

I’m not going to try this again, unless its something completely obvious.

I’m wondering if 2.0 is worth the upgrade to me.

Right now I have a perfectly working 2G 1.1.4 phone. Even applications that ordinarily operate as trials I have cracked (intelliscreen, video recorder etc). I love the fact that I’ve sorted out all my bugs but I’m a bit bored and thinking about upgrading to 2.0. My only worry beyond reinstalling/troubleshooting all my favorite apps is pay out my a$$ in the app store.

I was looking at the app store and I have to say many of the application look amazing but I’ve read some reviews about many being buggy…not to mention a bit pricey. While most apps at launch time were free, currently 24% cost $0.99.

In your honest opinion, do you think it’s worth it?

The other question is, will capitalism slow down app development through appsnap (installer)? I think so…it’s an inherent truth that anyone who can make money doing something they love will take the opportunity. This has me a bit worried as we might no longer see any cool apps coming out for jailbroken phones :(

Hi crysis, it should be obvious that the #G firmware will NOT work on your 2G first generation iPhone

the dev team clearly stated that it cant unlock the 3G iphone yet, hence NO boot neuter

you need to use a custom 2.0 firmware built for a first gen iPhone - this works

but WinPwn is also now out…

RMut, this is a personal decision

for me I was/am very bored with installer,

i never really needed intelliscreen, kate, vwallpaper, or vtones

I miss iPhone Video Recorder, thats about it…

I really like the AppStore and it’s offering, but thats just me, I have no problem paying for apps

I do see all, if not most developers trying to get into the appstore

only those not accepted, or those who’s apps will not conform to apples rules about app development (intelliscreen, summerboard, video recorder etc) will not make it and keep installer alive

I personally think you should atleast donate or purchase software (especially from installer) cause without the donation/purchases, the apps you looking for on installer (to steal or hack) will no longer be there cause the developer is broke…

just something to think about.

This is true. I’ll think about it, but doubt I’ll be upgrading anytime soon.
