iPhone Dev Team releases xPwn Open Source

By Aaron Besson at 22 July, 2008, 7:16 am

The iPhone Dev Team has posted xPwn on their website. xPwn is a cross-platform custom NOR firmware loader and custom IPSW generator for the iPhone being distributed to developers to create their own PWNAGE tools for Windows, Vista and Linux.

Because this release is comprised of command-line utilities, it’s meant primarily for developers and not end users. The Dev Team says that normal users certainly jailbreak (both 3G and first-gen) and unlock (first-gen) with it, it’s not really something you want to try without reading the lengthy, detailed README. If you don’t have the patience to do that, then maybe this release is not for you.

The source is released under the terms of the GNU General Public License version 3. The entire license can be found in the file called LICENSE in the download. The source code itself is available at: http://github.com/planetbeing/xpwn. There are two utilities in this package, as well as the bundles and FirmwareBundles folders from PwnageTool, and Turbo’s autopwn ramdisk.

PlanetBeing, the Dev member responsible for this says this is definitely not for beginners, it’s mostly meant to be a toy for *nix geeks. Absolutely no support should be expected or will be given. XPwn is also NOT winpwn. Winpwn will have things like easy package management, an actual system of installing stuff and creating custom bundles. Those tasks are outside the scope of XPwn.

This should be a happy moment for windows users as well. All you developers now have the tools to take a chance at making a great tool for windows, vista and linux users to PWN their iPhones. Best of all, as it is OpenSource any app created from the xPwn tool chain must/will be free. Enjoy.
