iPhone 2.1 Beta 2 - Apps Updated in Background via Push Notification Service

One of the biggest things missing in most if not all Apps from the AppStore is you cant get an update when the App is closed. This makes simple Apps for Instant Messaging and Social Networking ultimately flawed. Apple’s iPhone chief Scott Forstall spoke at the WWDC 08 and said that the reason that Apple had not implemented this was because of poor battery life from having allot of apps open and thus over working the processor, as well as how badly it worked on other mobile devices where users thought a program was closed and it wasn’t.

Download and Watch YouTube vids directly on your 2.0 iPhone with MxTube 1.5a

Max (the teenager developer of MXTube) didn’t want to rush the development of MxTube 2.0 so it wouldn’t be as buggy as MxTube 1.0. But Max has managed to get MxTube working on 2.0 on the Touch and iPhone, but he has has left new and under tested features turned off.

The new MxTube 1.5a does have a few extras such as:

The iPhone Wiki - The iPhone Hackers Encyclopedia

GeoHot has decided that there needs to be a centralized base of information for the iPhone hacking community, and he has set out on a mission to accomplish this.

The iPhone Wiki

http://theiphonewiki.com/

Long ago there used to be the Dev Team Wiki, the iPhone Elite wiki and others that had allot of the information and methods used for hacking the iPhone. People could join the wiki’s and contribute. Later with the fallout between the different groups and certain members/users abusing their privileges/power of the wiki, it was closed to the public. This kept methods and exploits secret (so Apple could NOT fix them before we used em) and also kept the spammers and those looking to make money from the info away. - But what if the Dev Team dissolved or something along those lines? Where would that leave the community?

Customize your 2.0 iPhone with Customize 2.1.1

Customize is 2.0 Compatible!

One of the things that I am sure that everyone has been missing is the ability to customize and personalize their iPhone/Touch. Apple would love if your iPhone was unrecognizable in a pile of iPhones, but not any more. Customize is now compatible with Firmware 2.0! There are apparently still a couple of bugs (the About page and user Comments still not working), but all the good stuff is in there and working. You can manually  download it here and install it via OpenSSH and FTP, or you can install it via Cydia (I am not seeing it listed on Cydia as the developer says)

Introducing MagicPad - Cut, Copy and Paste on the iPhone - Coming Soon

Thanks to Brian, Co-Founder of Proximi, Developers of MagicPad for sending this in via email :)

I posted last week about the great new Cut, Copy and Paste app that hopefully will be coming soon to and iPhone/Touch near you. I had found some screen shots and lots of mention of it being submitted to the AppStore for review, but never really got a name to go with the face. Well the app is called MagicPad and it looks awesome.

First Free Instant Messenger for iPhone from the AppStore

Well it didn’t take long for someone to bring out one of the most anticipated apps to the AppStore, a simply cross platform Chat client. Palringo is a novel Mobile Instant Messaging client for mobile phones and PCs that is now available on the AppStore for iPhone and Touch users.

iPhone Dev Team one step closer to unlocking iPhone 3G

The iPhone Dev Team are one step closer to a true software unlock for the iPhone 3G.

This image is the “About” screen from a 3G iPhone that was bought in a store last week by one fo the Dev Team. As you can see the modem firmware version has been successfully downgraded to an older “beta” firmware.

This is not an unlock (yet), but it is an illustration of the first progress made with regard to hacking the 3G baseband. The Dev Team have accomplished this by being able to execute their own code on the baseband that allows them to circumvent security checks and flash the baseband with older, disallowed (maybe unlocked) firmware.

Please note this has been accomplished using software only, the iPhone 3G has not been disassembled or hardware modified in any way.

Dev Team Confirm that PWNAGE Tool will work on iPhone firmware 2.1

It has been only two weeks since Apple released the new iPhone 3G and firmware 2.0.  It took the Dev Team only a week to polish the awesome PWNAGE tool to unlock 2.0 on first gen iPhones and jailbreak the new iPhone 3G. Like any new firmware, 2.0 had its’ share of problems, from a yellow looking screen, to buggy Apps from the AppStore, Mail Syncing problems and occasional system crass. It has been no secret that Apple will eb looking to fix these problems, and fix them fast.

Now that 2.1 has been confirmed to be in developers hands as a Beta, the Dev Team has had a chance to test their PWNAGE Tool on the new iPhone firmware to ensure the upgrade will go smoothly for the millions of iPhones owners that choose toeither jailbreak or unlock their iPhones.

Here’s a screenshot of 2.1 running on an unlocked iPhone 1G. Unlike all other jailbreaks (and unlocks for the first gen iPhones), the Dev Team believe Pwnage to only be fixable via a hardware change.

Installer 4 for iPhone and iPod Touch Update and Screenshots

Everyone who has updated to 2.0 is wondering ‘what’s up with Installer?’ , myself included. Even though I am getting by quite well without Summerboard, VideoRecroder and VideosTones, their return would be welcomed alongside Super Monkey Ball, WordPress, Remote and Facebook to name a few of the apps I enjoy form the AppStore.

Rip-Dev (who has taken over full development of Installer) has updated their site with some nice screen shots of the new Installer and it’s looking good. Allot like the AppStore and Itunes WiFi Store, which is a good thing. Rip-Dev is currently in the final stages tying the user interface to the back-end.

Rip-Dev will be soon contacting the authors of the various apps and major repo’s to invite them to test the new backend of Installer 4 for 2.0+.

When it’s ready, how will we get it?

Copy and Paste coming soon with iPhone firmware 2.1 - Hopefully

Engadget is reporting that Apple has started seeding 2.1 Beta 1, Build 5F90 Firmware to beta testers and developers and they are already reporting some great improvements over 2. I had already mentioned that 2.0.1 was being circulated internally by Apple and some of it’s trusted beta testers, but 2.0.1 is mainly bug fixes to 2.0 long list of gremlins.

2.1 on the other hand seems to be chock full of surprises. Having a look at the WebKit framework there are commands for “plugins,” “copy,” “paste,” “cut,” and some others. It is still unclear if this is simply code left over from the Apples Desktop OS X, but it is highly unlikely.

Maybe Apple saw the work of the Developer that submitted the Copy and Paste App and decided to buy/license it from them. Rumor has it they did the same thing with the Handwriting regocnition software that was submitted to th AppStore that made it’s way into Japanese and Chinese iPhone Firmwares.

This is a screen shot of an app that was submitted to the AppStore (by a developer that I cant find the name of) that shows their App that has cut, copy and paste features.

Apple has always said that they were thinking of adding Copy and Paste, but they had bigger things to deal with. Hopefully someone else has done all the hard work for them and all they need to do is give the App permissions and tweak it so that it works through out the operating system and between Apps. Because without a real clipboard that allows you to copy and paste text/urls/email addresses between safari and mail or a third party aapp like Wordpress, this new feature will be worthless for the msot part.

Update thanks to MacRumors:

… Apple has included new Core Location features that might suggest that turn-by-turn GPS could become a reality. Core Location can reportedly track your direction and the speed at which you are traveling.

Along with the new firmware, Apple has also seeded a new version of the iPhone SDK but the new SDK can not be used to submit Apps to the current App Store. There have been earlier reports that Firmware 2.0.1 had been spotted in the wild, but a 2.1 upgrade would presumably introduce more than just bug fixes.

Update: Besides Core Location speed and heading additions, Apple has also included early Push Notifications APIs that allows applications to process notifications in the background. Apple promised this feature by September.
