Kate for the iPhone - Extended and Added iPhone App features

Kate for the iPhone is an app that allot of you may be familiar with but not know it by that name. Kate is the new name for Caterpillar form Rip-Dev.

Rip Dev released 1.3 yesterday and along with it came some new features, improvements on old features and of course a new name.

Firstly, Kate (Caterpillar) is a commercial application (you gotta pay for this bad boy), some may not think the app is worth it, so the developer has conveniently allows users to get a three day trial. Kate adds some really neat functions and improvements, but at the same time, as a past Caterpillar user, I can attest that prior versions were buggy, and clashed dangerously with other apps.

Update: If you are having the spinning wheel of death because of Kate, here is a quick fix:

  1. Use, SSH, WinSCP or FUGU etc, even iBrickr
  2. REMOVE “dock” files from usr/local/bin/dock
  3. Reboot phone
  4. The screen then becomes responsive. Goto KATE, untick all the boxes, and press apply.
  5. Uninstall Kate from installer.
  6. Enjoy phone.

Changes in Caterpillar/Kate 1.3

  • All Components:
    • Due to a legal dispute with Caterpillar, Inc., the name of the product is changed to Kate.
  • EQ (new component):
    • New component: three-band equalizer for the iPod application — you are no longer limited by the default EQ presets.
  • µCalendar:
    • Added an option to enable or disable birthdays from the contacts list (as Outlook duplicates them).
    • All-day events for the next day are now properly displayed as the next day.
  • Privacy:
    • Added the night mode setting to disable incoming calls and SMS messages sounds during the specified interval.
  • Reminder:
    • Reminder no longer produces notifications during a phone call.

Two features of this app that I most certainly enjoy are the uCalendar and mostly the new ability to uninstall apps directly from the springboard. Simply hold your finger on any app and wait for it to start to do the jig, third party apps installed with Installer can be removed, without a soft reboot too, so you uninstall multiple apps. (I have noticed some probs with the newest Installer, some apps uninstall but leave the icon, I am sure this will be solved soon)

Features

  • SmartDialer (search for numbers and names via the dial pad, easily turned on and off)
  • Facelift (looking to replace summerboard - add themes and wallpapers)
  • uCalendar - (adds a calendar and event listing to the lock screen - v cool)
  • Reminder - (alerts you to missed sms’s etc)
  • System Font - (replace your system font with a new one)
  • Privacy - (hide sms pop up alerts)
  • Uninstall - (uninstall (most) apps installed with Installer on the fly from the spring board)
  • Equalizer - (Very cool - adjust the music players equalizer - actually works)

To install add http://repository.ripdev.com/ to Installer sources, and install Kate from the category RiP Dev. You are free to try it out for three days then you need to decide if you would like to apy for it. As I said there are some conflicts with the old version with other apps, I have not experienced any probs so far, But install at your own risk.
