It seems as though ChronicProductions had nothing better to do yesterday and spent his time decrypting and sniffing through the latest beta firmware for the iPhone. What he stumbled upon answers a question I had. Would the 2nd Gen 3G iPhone use the same firmware as the 1st Gen iPhone owners like ourselves? - Looks like thats a roger.

It seems that Apple is planning to use the same firmware on 2nd Gen 3G iPhones as on 1st Gen iPhones by adding the ability to enable / dissable 3G and or EDGE. This was found in iPhone 2.0 Beta 5 by Chronic Productions and you can check out more info on his wiki site.

He says that 1st gen users iPhones will simply crash when trying to enable 3G on it (as expected) but 3G users will have the choice, and the ability to use either or. This could mean great battery conservation by using edge to get email and other small tasks and 3G for more exciting stuff like YouTube, browsing the internet and maybe even iChat
