3G iPhone GPS confirmed - Broadcom to supply GPS Chips

Seems that a few announcements are revealing that the rumored GPS functionality of the new 3G iPhone may be true. According to a report on GIGaom, thanks to legal requirements put in place by the FCC, Apple is going to be adding GPS to its new and future phones. The contract for the GPS Chips has be awarded to Broadcom according to GIGaom.

Broadcom is the new kid on the block in the GPS market but this will surely make it a well known name (and it’s stockholders very happy) if they are the muscle behind the 3G iPhones GPS capabilities.

The chip that they may be using is the BCM4750 Single-Chip AGPS Solution listed on their website.

“BCM4750 is a single-chip, single-die GPS receiver IC fabricated on 90 nm RFCMOS technology. The BCM4750 integrates a high-performance baseband section with a low-noise CMOS radio front end. It is designed to interface with host processors in mobile phones, PDAs, Personal Navigation Devices (PNDs), and MP3 players. The BCM4750 is a host-based GPS IC that delivers the highest positioning performance yet uses the smallest PCB area in the market today.”

Its features are as follows:

  • Single-chip solution (AGPS baseband and CMOS RF frontend integrated on a single-die) minimizing board space footprint (<35 sq mm2 PCB area for a complete AGPS solution)
  • Up to 2-Hz update rate
  • Advanced low-power RFCMOS technology and low-power tracking at 15 mW for the longest battery life
  • Broadcom software provides protocol layers for control plane (RRLP and RRC) as well as user plane (SUPL)

This may not be the chip but it gives a good idea of the possible specs Braodcom can offfer and what we could see in the new 3G iPhone.
