It seems as though Apple may have a trick up it’s sleeve. Latest reports on the web are saying that Apple is going to be using the new Infineon S-Gold3H chips in their new 3G iPhone thats going to be unveiled around June. Now details as sketchy but according to Engadget and TUAW this could mean allot of great improvements for consumers.
iPhone currently uses the S-GOLD2 EDGE chipset, so an upgrade to the newer, faster and more capable chipset seems only logical. The S-GOLD3H uses 7.2Mbps HSDPA 3G cellular technology and has built-in acceleration and media playback features (which the iPhone already has).
One of the more exciting features is that the chip also includes a higher resolution 5 mega-pixel camera instead of a 2.0 found in the current iPhone. Does this mean that a much better camera may be found in the new 3G iPhone 2.0? It would make sense if Apple really wants to stamp out the Nokia N95 and upcoming N96 (both available in 8GB and 16GB). Hopefully the new 3G among all these new features will incorporate some needed support features, camera flash and optical zoom, video recording, video calls (meaning a second cam will be needed on the face of the iPhone) bluetooth file transfer for photos, some sort of copy and paste, sms forwarding, some simple form of iWork for office docs and all the other features that are missing from the current iPhone.
From Appleinsider:
“Hidden away in the latest test firmware for iPhone developers is the mention of the chipset that will power third-generation cellular Internet access in Apple’s next generation of the device.”
“Sleuthing reveals this to be an Infineon chipset, the SGOLD3H, which both supplies the baseband for cellular data on GSM phones and serves equally as a general application accelerator and an audiovisual processor.”
“Still, the newly discovered hardware references all but confirm the dependence of a 3G iPhone launch on Apple’s firmware overhaul, which is officially scheduled to debut sometime in June. It also corroborates past claims by analysts that predicted an Infineon chip at the heart of an iPhone upgrade due in mid-year.”

I personally hope these reports are true and not another rumor. The 3G iPhone is creating allot of buzz recently and allot of these findings are a result of the 2.0 Beta software floating around which has reached version 3. I guess it will be a waiting game between now and then to see what Apple decides to do.
