“More than a quarter of iPhones sold in the US have been “unlocked” to work on network providers other than Apple’s exclusive partner AT&T, a study says.”
If apple is reporting that they have sold 4 million iPhones to date as they did in the 2008 MacWorld Keynote Address by Steve Jobs. This recent report means that almost 1 million of those are unlocked, wow. That’s a big chunk of apples revenue from 2 year AT&T (and other signed european carriers) contracts that apple gets a percentage of. Thats an estimated $500,000,000 USD of the profits apple wants to get with its goal of selling 10 Millios iPhones. wow, this is not a cat and mouse game anymore, this is will become operation ‘Shock and Lock!’
Apple has too much invested in the iPhone, and they owe it to their investors and business partners to fix this loss in revenue. The are going to try really hard to lock the unlocked users out, especially with the new SDK (Software Developers Kit) being released in late Feb this year. It will mean that apple has a new avenue to make money (back) by selling Apps, Add-Ons and Games with its newest incarnation of its’ iTunes Music/Video/Gaming portal.
Delivering the new Apps created by third-party developers, approved by apple and sold to happy owners of the iPhone, on a LEGIT apple endorsed contract, with a iTunes Account -whew..
Here is a little more of the BBC article:
“He estimates that if Apple sells 10 million iPhones in the US by the end of 2008, but 30% of them have been unlocked to work with other phone networks, Apple will lose $500m (£251m) in revenues.”
